Dark berries, a firm dose of good oak in both the bouquet and on the palate. Full bodied, a firm amount of good sweetness, good acidity and tannin. In its young maturity stage now.

Last bottle of the lot. Wonderfully matured Bdx style cuvée. Leather, tobacco, plum, chocolate. A bottle you finish in no time and soon regret not to have stocked up.

Similar to my previous note. The port was just a hint of port in the beginning and was completely gone after 1 hour. The acidity seemed to be more present than in previous bottles. Still years to go. 92-93

As per previous note. This time drank against 09 Musar. The latter was just slightly more to my taste. The Kanonkop is more fruit forward and less subtle. Delicious nonetheless. Some folks are saying drink up… I would say this has at last 3-5 years of peak life left in it. Enjoy!

Deep garnet colored with slight staining and a high viscosity (14% ABV). On the nose I get medium intensity aromas of cassis, leather, mint, pencil shavings, blackberry, black plum, coffee, vanilla, toasty oak and stewed mulderberry. The palate is dry with medium acidity, a full body and medium (+) tannins that are integrating nicely. Rich flavors of cassis, stewed mulderberry, black plum jam with tertiary development by way of leather as well as oak influence- vanilla, coffee and toasty oak. The pencil shavings and mint are present and add a nice angle. The finish turns a little tart, surprising for a New World wine but then again this is a classic Bordeaux blend- Cab Sav 70%, Merlot and Cab Franc at 15% each. The length of said finish is quite long and lingering, inviting me to take another sip. This bottle is at peak and en pointe. I nearly pulled it 5 years ago, thank goodness I waited. 93 points for this $70 wine makes it a 4 star effort. Drink by 2028. I'm pairing it with Tenderloin tails and Peppercorn sauce.

Beautiful bouquet with dark berries, a beautiful and small dose of oak. Good and fresh acidity and length. Showing the first signs of maturity and is a great pleasure already and can last at least another 7+ years.

Plum, blackcurrant on the nose. Dark fruits - plum, black cherry, black currant - balanced with oak, chocolate and earthiness. Medium body and medium acidity. Off dry. Mid tannins and a long finish. Young wine will age well.

Beautiful and concentrated bouquet with ripe dark fruits and pleasant oak. On the palate red and dark berries, beautiful and fresh acidity and a pleasant touch of sweetness and well dosed oak. Beautiful and juicy wine still in the first half of its maturity stage.

South Africa WIMPS #175 27th March 2024 (La Trompette, Chiswick): Double decanted 7 hours before drinking. Very dark fruited, cassis and blackcurrant fruit pastille. Powdery tannins. With air some touches of dark milk chocolate. Some hints of chestnut and a little soy character. As it warms in the glass the 14.5% alcohol makes its presence felt. Will be interesting sample another bottle on its 15th birthday.

Gave this a ~3 hour decant. The nose showed lots of high-quality oak alongside black fruits and ripe raspberries. Some smoked meat and sage emerged over time. The palate was plush and giving, the oak apparent here as well, with blackcurrents and strawberries leading the way into an expansive finish.

As the note below mine indicates, this seems to be in an oaky phase now, more so than I remember from the first bottle I tried about 8 months ago. I'm not sure what the aging curve of these tends to look like, but there seems to be complexity here waiting to come out once the oak is subsumed. Overall quite promising.

This bottle had a very mature, porty nose after decanting it. I left the wine for 3 hours in the decanter and surprisingly the nose got very much better. However, this was not the best bottle of the 1989 Kanonkop Cabernet.

blind, side by side with Rousseau 1989
EVERYBODY was surprised and flashed from the Pinotage. Nobody had any clue what it could be. No varnish notes that you get periodically from this grape variety, not alcoholic and no sign of tiredness or oxidation. 94-95
