Tempranillo of 50-60-year-old vineyards located on a slope of calcareous gravel with outcrops of the mother rock in the Sonsierra Riojana (San Vicente de la Sonsierra) at an altitude of 488 m. Ferment with yeasts from the vineyard, malolactic in a 4000 L oak tub and 18-month aging in 2000 L French oak barrels and subsequent assembly in a 4000 L wooden truncated barrel. Ripe black fruit, balsamic, mineral, direct, fresh, silky, elegant, fine, long and persistent. Nice wine!

14.5% alcohol; imported by Musk & Co, Miami, Florida; the vineyard is located in Nalda, in Rioja, at the extreme southwest of the Logron~o urban area, about 10 km from the city center; composite 45 mm cork with 5 mm and 4 mm real cork facings at the ends, maximum of 5 mm wine seepage into the cork; faint whiff of wet cork laced with fruit; foil is light to medium weight; medium to long legs, solid garnet color; nose of alcohol, tannins, coffee/chocolate, root vegetables, berries, not necessarily in that order; opened, oxygenation accelerated via Vinturi, tasted 20 minutes later at 18 degrees C (16-18 is recommended by the vintner) in a Luigi Bormioli wine glass designed for cabernet sauvignon/merlot; full bodied, sharp tannins stabbing at the the front and middle of the tongue, a dry minerality in the background running the full length of the tongue; definitely not fruit forward, more in the direction of coffee/chocolate effect, first noticed in the nose, going all the way through the long finish, which is bounded by minerals and not by bitterness; the wine has an upbeat mouthfeel which makes it suitable for pairing with red meats, or possibly with cheeses, salted nuts, and other hors d'ouvres and dessert foods; or enjoy it solo, which doesn't necessarily mean by yourself, but rather not accompanied by food

Appearance: Medium ruby-purple with little perceptible extract in the tears.

Nose: Medium intensity aromas of cooked strawberries and raspberries, spiced plums, and some smoke. Alcohol is perceptible.

Palate: Medium body, medium acidity, high alcohol but less hot than expected based on the nose, medium tannin felt on the center of the tongue. Medium flavor intensity with ripe red fruit (strawberries, raspberries) dominating. Medium length on the finish.

Impression: Fresh, concentrated, good quality, and easy drinking garnacha. Excellent value at $16/bottle.

Nice nose. Light. Got from last bottle for $16. From Jeff H: Full body with clingy legs. Garnet color. Leather note on the nose. Taste of black currants and pepper. Firm tannins and a long finish.

Rioja young wines: medium-dark ruby in the glass, the nose has lovely aromas of red fruits (raspberry, strawberries) laced with herbs (thyme, tarragon) and whiffs of lavender and leather. full-feeling but very fresh in the mouth, the fruit uncoils slowly in the mid-palate. brambly and spicy notes add lovely depth carried on by dusty tannins that still need a bit of integration. fairly long finish with herbal notes.

a lovely Garnacha that should deliver nicely for another handful of years.

14.5% AbV carried very well; 100% old-vines Garnacha from some sixty different high-altitude plots; 30% whole cluster.

Flight home (In the air): Ripe red berries, cream, vanilla, butter as well as se chocolate and some fresh black plum. On the palate it's juicy and a little sour (fresh?) than the nose implies. Tannins are more controlled than I would have thought. Silky and supportive of the fruit. This is fairly straightforward but nice none the less and balanced.

Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 4 *shared* reds] from 09/07/18 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): A tasting experience I *shall* not forget! ¡Mil gracias, Oscar! :)
Bottle #3,767/6,753

Generally, "Vineyards over 40 yrs old located at an altitude of 650 meters. Double selection : the one of the land, giving priority to limestone with boulders, & the one of the strains, choosing those of less natural load & small clusters, 3,500 kg/ha. Harvest selected in boxes of 15 kg. Pre-fermentation cold maceration & alcoholic fermentation in FR oak barrels of 4,000 l. Malolactic fermentation in new FR oak barrels of extra fine grain. Aging in those same barrels for 17 mos."

N: Smoke with ripe berries; Intensity lurking

P: LM body; BEAUTIFUL, almost swtish frt met by a puckerish astringency which, without even remotely losing track of the frt, morphs into a LONG, very, VERY slightly puckerish finish with an ELEGANT swtness to the remaining astringency. DESERVES through '21, then going beyond its 15th, I suspect. SENSATIONAL, & quite possibly *the* FINEST Rioja I've yet to taste! :) 14.5% ABV; My EXCEPTIONAL-

Retailer tasting (@ The factory): The bouquet is still a bit locked, but shows good dark forest fruits and some sweet spices. On the palate a mouth filling wine with juicy dark berries, vanilla, good acidity and round, slightly drying tannin with a good bite. Really nice wine. 88+
