Sweet without being cloying. Dense plavors of raisin, plumb and apricot. Really nice acidity!
Only about the 4th time I have had a Tokaji and this was the best.

A little bit muddy but flavour still rich and rustic though possibly missing a bit of character. Medium weight and length and nice but not memorable.

Our host called this: “The French Dead Corpses Tasting”. (@ PV): Golden brown. In the bouquet and on the palate raisins and zest, butterscotch, beautiful and intense sweetness which is beautifully balanced by good acidity. The wine has an enormous length.

What an incredible difference from the last bottle.

Nice clear dark amber color despite the typical Tokaji sediment encrusting the inside of the bottle. This wine is the consistency of syrup- it really highlights that you're drinking something special.

Glorious nose of flowers, raisin and apricots. Hints of furniture polish. Acidic, but not aggressively so like other bottles. Just enough to balance the intense sweetness.

60 second+ finish.

These bottles are a crapshoot- communist era Tokaji is wildly unpredictable- but when you get a good one they really are something special.

Dinner at Simon's and Kevin's (TriBeCa): Opaque coffee black (and a very little brown at the rim). Nose is chockablock with fig, prune, balsamic, and coffee. Palate is much the same, but with huge, almost overwhelming molasses; massively rich and viscous, like motor oil. Then it has terrific citric acid-mandarin-skin oil-like lift to the essentially eternal finish. This wine will live forever. (It is great wine and, while I appreciated it, I found it a little too much of everything at this point in its youth -- I preferred a '64 Eszencia we had a year or so earlier. That said, I was in the definite minority on this point, and I'm pretty sure this was one of the wines of the year for everyone else there.)

Starbright, fullish orange-gold with an amber sheen; wonderful complexity, rich but only medium-dry, very honeyed (like a dry TBA, if you can imagine such a thing), apples. candied fruit, barley sugar, hint of toffee and nuts; delicious tangy acidity binds the wine together, harmonious, delicate sweetness, velvety, elegant, lively and juicy; excellent length, starts out with candied fruit and then becomes drier, more towards wood and nut. A modest Szamorodni from a great year (clearly has some botrytis), delicious.

I brought this bottle to a tasting where it was tasted beside of Ch Climens and Ch Lafaurie-Peyraguey. The Tokay showed a very good balance, intense flavors of nuts and a delicate sweetness. For me it was more elegant than the Sauternes wines in this flight. The last 15% of the bottle was kept and tasted 4 days later. It showed excellent condition. Even if the wine was very good now, it will last for several decades more.

Super nutty on the nose. Hazelnuts, almonds and cashews. Has tawny port-like characteristics of caramel and dried cherries. A honeyed, liqueur feel to the nose.
Lighter bodied on the palate with fairly bright acidity yet. Surprisingly refreshing, and not thick or cloying. There is a honeyed feel to the mouth along with flavors of roasted cashews. Some nice cherry liqueur flavors. Really long, pleasant finish.
Paired excellent with a strong, intense aged Cabrales blue cheese.

I purchased a glass of this at a restaurant for $15. I thought this was a great price considering an Aszu Esssencia is a couple steps above a 6 put and wines of this age and quality normally sell for at least $150. Borkombinat was the large state owned cooperative during the communist era which I believe later changed their name to Kereskedöház and has now been reorganized into Crown Estates. They were known more for high production than quality but I felt an Aszu Esszencia stood a good chance to rise above the reputation. Matched with dessert of white and dark chocolate mousse with a rasberry sauce. This was a dark burnt orange/brown color. On the nose it had a hint of balsamic. Wonderful fruit still present in this wine. Notes of blackberry, orange peel and plum brandy. Almost portlike in character. This wine was primarily characterized by very lively acidity which held everything together. Full bodied. Not a classic wine but a great experience. 93 points.

This was a rather badly stored bottle that my dad had had upright on a shelf in his bar for years. The cork crumbled virtually to dust. A deep caramel colour. Very raisiny nose, lacking in character. A good attack: this is still very much alive. Pretty decent acidity. Remarkably clean and fresh. Honeyed, with orange flavours on the middle. Sweetens towards the finish. Not at all cloying. Fair length only. Remarkable survivor. Very Good Indeed.
