10/29/2011 - ydris wrote: 92 pointsThis was a double-mag special bottling we had for halloween. The wine had risen up all the way to the top of the cork and there was some seepage. This note was straight from opening so the wine was BIG and monolithic but chewy and approachable. More to follow... |

1981 PétrusPomerol Red Bordeaux Blend more |
11/24/2010 - ydris wrote: 90 pointsWhat a surprise. I wasn't expecting much based on the reviews but the Petrus was a subtle delight. Light floral notes along with subtle blackberries and still quite long on the finish - dancing mid palate for 30 seconds before gently tapering off. A little herbaceous here and there but not unpleasantly so. After a bad run of 70's and 80's Bordeaux it was a relief to get a good one. Maybe I was lucky with provenance here - my cellar for 10 years and one careful owner (at least that's what he said) beforehand. |

NV Veuve Clicquot Champagne Demi-SecChampagne Blend more |
1/1/2010 - ydris wrote: 89 pointsThis was a New Years Champoo for a quiet New Years celebration. Given the pairing of sweet Cream Pie (one coconut cream, one chocolate cream) Demi-sec seemed better than typical Champagne. That seemed a good choice and although I wouldn't choose a Demi-sec champagne normally the balance here was pretty good. Recommended if you are looking for celebration bubbles with a sweet dessert. |

1970 Fonseca Porto VintagePort Blend more |
12/24/2009 - ydris wrote: 92 pointsEvolved and complex spiced fruit. But perhaps lighter than I expected. Still, Fonseca remains my favorite house with a little more attitude than Taylor and more class than Dow or Warre. This bottle has a decent finish lasting 20-30 seconds and lingers on the palate for much longer than that. A little bitter at the end but not in a bad way. |

12/13/2009 - ydris wrote: 93 pointsDeep and earthy. This wine has become a brooding monster. Not in your face, but a boulder covered in soft soft moss. Long finish and it still layers of dark fruit waiting to be uncovered. Should drink nicely for at least the next five years or so. |

11/26/2009 - ydris wrote: 95 pointsNot my first Yquem and not my last but the oldest by 20 years I had stashed away. From auction a while back so I had all the usual worries - still Thanksgiving with friends seemed a great time to pop it. A beautiful clear caramel colour in the bottle was even more beautiful in the fancy Riedel decanter where it stayed for an hour and a half before dessert. Initial impressions of dried fruits were marred by bitterness that killed it's length but letting it sit a little longer solved that. Once it stabilized we had a wonderful unctuous dried apricot jam but one that kept the right side of too sweet! Other reviwers say this is lighter than other years and I see that but it was still wonderful. Now all I have to do is wait 30 years for my 1990 to be this evolved!! |

1998 Plumpjack Cabernet Sauvignon EstateOakville more |
11/26/2009 - ydris wrote: 93 pointsThis was my only mag of the '98 and I was interested to see what it would be like in comparison to the plethora of 750's I have. Opened and decanted for T-Day '09 with probably 45 mins before drinking. I was pleasantly surprised - soft tannins, low acidity and gentle red fruits all balanced very nicely. The mag was certainly softer, gentler and somehow more elegant than the recent 750's and probably has more life. A great accompanyment to turkey and trimmings and further justification for loving the weird little Plumpjack vineyard. |

Gorgeous clean rubies in glass. Soft tannins and elegant fruit. Delicate and pure. Interested to see how it is tomorrow. Ready to drink - don't wait too long. |

11/15/2009 - ydris wrote: 89 pointsDisappointing but my own fault. Here's a tip: don't pull the wine from the cellar, drive 250 miles, pop it open and drink without pause. This wine needs at least an hour to open up. Overall with a little care I think we have more potential but drink in the next year or two - it's not evolving much more. |

11/26/2009 - ydris wrote: 94 pointsDrank with colleagues after a night of celebration. Lighter than I remember other '77s but still brilliant. The long cork was wet all the way to the top but once the initial musty smell cleared the flavors and nose came through loud and clear. Probably not getting any better but will be this good for a decade. Yvan (whose hotel room we were in) commented that six hours later his room smelled like a portuguse brothel. Not sure how he knows. |

I have to say I was quite impressed... well aged, well balanced and a treat to drink. Chocolate with a few herbs mixed in. Subdued dark fruits and soft tannins. Just good drinking you don't have to think about. |
