1982 Château Sociando-Mallet

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/25/2015 - RockinCabs wrote: 90 points

Nose: Wild Blackberry, Ripe Cassis Cedar, Old Leather, Herbal notes and a muddy chocolate/ash note. Palate: Enters with nice Blackberry/Cassis and then unfolds some bell pepper, cedar, cigar and oak. Middle weight feel but everything you like about the medoc is in there. Finish: Focus on the remaining blackberry fruit and old leather and library characteristics. Classic northern Medoc with 30+years on it. Served PNP with cheeses which I think was a perfect delivery for this wine.

Of Note, the Suchots served before this then seemed almost erotically candied when you went back to them after smelling the Sociando. Thanks Marc. Great Choice.

7/25/2015 - RockinCabs wrote: 94 points

Nose: Fine and nuanced nose of black cherry, sappy raspberry, cocoa, Vosne spice, and a bit of floral/matchstick elements. Palate: When you think "fine boned burgundy" this is it for me. Powdery tannin, palate coating fruit, Vosne spice and minerality all acting in harmony. Not powerful, not lacking in depth but very precise. Finish: Lush cherry, rose petals, dried raspberry and some limestone.

WOTN for its balance. Terroir of the two burgs tonight expressed vintage and maker really well. Over the long haul I would keep the Chezeaux, but today the Grivot drinks really well.

7/25/2015 - RockinCabs wrote: 93 points

Nose: Lemon, Peach and Pear fruit with a nice seashell note, and a nice touch of smoke/brown sugar as well. Palate: Classic chalky Minerality that is well balanced with some round lemon, lychee and peach fruit and a good dose of acidity. Finish: Lengthy and satisfying.

Malo is so well managed on this wine. Just enough to give a bit of fat, but not trying to be a mersault. Very nice starter on a night of fantastic wines.

2009 Jérôme Chezeaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots

Pinot Noir more

7/25/2015 - RockinCabs wrote: 92 points

Nose: Sweet candied berries, Sappy Black Cherry, Vanillin, Floral whifs, Smoke, and some Vosne Spice. Intensity of the nose varied a bit, but at its high points showed the ripe 09 vintage well. Palate: Raspberry, Cherry, Sweet Tarts, Vosne Spice and some great glycerin and real fat. Tanins and acid provided good cut, but at times time the alcohol showed strongly. Finish: Suave and nuanced despite its large and somewhat flamboyant personality. Cherry candies, Vines, great spice.

Decant and enjoy now, or it will hold for 10-15 years nicely. Never going to be elegant, but definitely a powerful representation of Suchots.

2010 Hobel Wine Works Cabernet Sauvignon Engelhard Vineyard

Napa Valley more

7/21/2015 - RockinCabs wrote: 91 points

Nose: Earth, Potato, Plum, Cherry and Baking Spice notes. Showed a strong green pepper streak in this showing as well. Palate: Enters with a big burst of Spicy Cherry, Blackberry and Oak. It comes across a bit hot in the mid-palate, but gains some elegance when the cherry/spice notes are showing Finish: Relatively bulky tannin right now that is supported by more blackberry, earth and green pepper.

This wine is figuring out what it wants to be when it grows up. Very split personality here. DryCab might chalk this up to "Another TRB", jury is out for me.

Hour decant Nose: Black cherry, sweet berries, forrest floor and an earthy note. Palate: Ripe red/black fruit attack with elements of stem and some nice supporting acid. Finish: Dense and sweet with great balance and some cedar & spice notes. Great wine.

Left a glass over night and this mellowed out in an interesting way. Overripe strawberry and some brown notes coming through. I would not over aerate this, but showing great right now with some patience.

Nose: Lemon, orange peel, slight lanolin and ginger note. Palate: Refreshing palate that has a"pop" of pineapple, marzipan and spice in the mid-palate. Finish: Zesty citrus finish with some orange notes.

Gorgeous upfront acids that are driven through the mid-palate by sweet and spicy tropical notes.

2010 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five

Stags Leap District more

7/13/2015 - RockinCabs wrote: 90 points

This is actually tightening up and required more decanting this year than it did last year. Upon opening there were Cabernet herb (sage, basil, green tea) notes showing underneath the Plum fruit on the nose.

Given an hour in the decanter and some vigorous swirling the SLD fruit really came out and the Shafer spice, plum, blackberry and blueberry came out of the wine. This is a really well balanced wine that is also massive in scale. Acid, fruit tannin all get in nice harmony once fully opened.

Best bottles were on release at this point, but showing a great prospective future. Locking up a bit right now, will revisit on 3rd anniversary.

Nose: Ripe rich Blackberry, Plum, Chocolate, slight spice and a bit of Green Pepper. Palate: Drenched with fruit and showing great feel on entry. Black Cherry, Blackberry and some Leather notes. Slight green note in the mid-palate but not in an off putting way. Finish: Broad and persistent with dark fruit.

This surprised for its quality at under $25. Agree with others that are backing the truck up on this great 2012 drinker.

Nose: sweet herbs, cherry, blackberry, leather, spices and sweet earth. Classic cos nose. Palate: enters with bright acidity that breaks into cherry, Indian spice, anise and currant. Sweet fruit layers with leather and spice components. Finish: quite long but somewhat one note. No drying, but lacking completeness.

This is a nice cos with all the topicity of the property, but is just held back from greatness.

Recent notes are spot on for this wine so there is not much need to elaborate. This is showing seamless sexy plum, fig, and cherry fruit with licorice tobacco and hot stone coming in behind it. Complex but still hedonistic at thisstage. Could cellar further but feel free to pop one now as it is so nice.

Sappy and dense Pinot fruit here with Black Cherry, Framboise, Plum and Spice notes. This has a large scaled elegance to it with good acidity, moderate tannin and sweet fruit that gains as it is open. Great highliner that will drink well now and for 4-5 years.

I think that the tropical fruit on this is quite nice (guava, melon and meyer lemon) but there is an odd sour grapefruit element that confuses the flavors as the wine finishes. Nice SB, but not quite as great as I thought it was in the tasting room.

Nose: Cassis, Plum, Hot Brick, Spring Flowers and Tobacco. Closing up a bit, but there is a lot here. Palate: Enters with dense dark fruit and a suave personality that gives way to some of the more tobacco/mineral elements of the wine. Finish: Melange of red and black fruit as the acidity shows what this wine has in reserve.

Interesting to check on right upon release. Will be adding a few to the cellar over the long haul. Nice wine.

Nose: Blackberry, Plum Sauce, Coffee, Licorice and Anise. Powerful nose. Palate: Suave on the palate with nice dark fruit, Blackberry, Black Cherry and Cassis. Feel is driven by a slight glycerin component and complexities of chinese five spice, anise and espresso give depth. Finish: Moderate and a touch hot at times.

More modern than the classicist 2006 we had last week, and not quite as open and giving.

This showed significantly better than the last bottle. Slow oxed for about an hour before drinking.

Nose: Plum, Cherry, Earth, Tobacco and Herbs. Palate: Nice weight and density balanced with good acid. Blackberry, Plum and Cherry fruit were backed with nice earth and smoke inflections. Simple, but enjoyable. Finish: Moderate length with bright acidity. Delivers dark red fruit and classic medoc wet earth.

As Englishman's Claret would say, it scratches the itch but does not feign greatness.

Nose: Plum, Black Cherry, Clove and Sweet Oak that gets more interesting as it unfolds. Palate: Silky right out of the gate with dark fruit, eucalyptus, cocoa, minerals, spice and some heat. Sweet soil notes with Plum, Licorice and Cherry fruit make this great. Finish: Moderate and showing some drying tannin/oak. This detracts from its future agability in some ways.

Definitely showed the best of three bottles, but given its neighbors (DA, Ovid, etc.) I had expected more in this window (8-10 years).

2011 Réserve de la Comtesse

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/25/2015 - RockinCabs wrote: 89 points

Solid young pauillac from the PLL stable that is tasting great now. Nose: blackberry, toasted coconut, cherry and some floral / pencil notes. Palate: mid weight and showing good fruit. Not much complexity. Feel is very suave. Finish: Cherry fruit and oak. Not much else.

Great effort, especially given the challenge of the vintage, as this really does show the character of the estate.

My problem with the pricing of Bordeaux in "off vintages" is that the vignerons now believe that there is no such thing as an off vintage, and price the wines with a relatively set floor which seems to creep all the time. 2nd labels should be an accessible way to learn an estate, but at a $45 entry fee there are better things to hunt down.
