Deep big Foley fruit and silky tannin. This was another great SBR with Plum, blackberry, coffee and smoke notes. Large scaled high alc beast. Fun to drink but defiantly a hedonists wine.

Remains a really nice california cab that is modern and large scaled. Gorgeous blackberry, licorice, smoke, chocolate, dusty earth, tobacco and some espresso notes. Touch of the baking spice that I always get from Mike Hirby as well.

Nice explosive red fruit on this with just a bit of MSD funk. Give these a few years to come around. Needed Vintouri and a few hours in the decanter to give full pleasure. My preference is for the Cuvee Bertin, but this is quite nice as well.

Nice Bourgogne with a good amount of dark cherry, chalky tannin and piercing acidity. Well balanced and gives a good sense of the NSG region where most of the grapes are grown.

Nice grapefruit, lemon and slight mango notes. Good SB with a tropical edge. Obvious quality fruit, but does not have the depth of other Rutherford SB that I like.

2009 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate

St. Helena more

5/9/2015 - RockinCabs wrote: 95 points

This needs about 2 hours to open up in a decanter. I would have aerated this if possible.

Nose: Blackberry, Cherry, Framboise, Chocolate, and some sweet oak. Grows more nuanced as it opens showing cedar, stone and licorice. Palate: Suave an sexy palate feel here. Nice blend of dense fruit, glycerin and cedar tobacco influenced notes. Great espresso bean and red fruit notes as well. Finish: This one really carries on the finish and lasts for a good while.

Palate feel on this was showing plush, glycerin wrapped tannin and some really nice red/black fruit. There was a nice silky quality on entry, yet the finish showed a wine that needed some time. Give this a few years to develop, or enjoy for the sexy palate feel in its youth.

Very meaty and dense, but the fruit quality of 2012 was very apparent. Dark cassis, plum and blackberry notes with some soil and tobacco elements. None of the mineral I generally expect from Veeder, but this just needs time to come around.

Nose: Cherries, Blackberry, Leather and Earth/Floral notes. Complex nose that exudes an old world feel. Palate: Striking blackberry and leather with good mix of spice and some floral notes. Suave and resolved at this point. Finish: Great length and sweet tannin. The lingering blackberry and spice showed the tokalon vineyard source off quite well.

This was the clear standout in a table of good Napa cabs on this night. Has come around very well for a notoriously stubborn napa vintage.

Decent chardonnay by the glass at a local restaurant. Pineapple, granny smith apple and a touch of baking spice from the oak treatment. Passable quaffer, and paired well with food. Lots of heat on this however, and seemed clunky in its integration showing yeasty notes.

Incredible Steaks & The Immaculate Cellar (Tampa, FL): Nose: a perfumed melange of blackberry, blueberry, violets and smoke. Palate: Elegant and suave, all silk across the palate. Sweet cherry fruit, sexy tobacco notes and tons of florals. Layered and nuanced, hitting various combinations of these flavor profiles. Finish: Penetrating with Cherry, Tobacco and White Flowers. Unreal on the finish.

Take 83 Palmer, advance it a few decades and make the palate catch up to the nose. This had all of that and more. High neck fill on a 61 from 375 ... nope this does not happen every day, but god is it good!

Incredible Steaks & The Immaculate Cellar (Tampa, FL): Nose: Ripe tomato, green pepper, cassis, sweet tobacco, pencil shavings and some nice earthy garden notes. Palate: Dense and saturated with Blackberry, V8 juice, cassis, blackberry, mint and pipe tobacco. The vegetal/minty layer was fairly constant with more berry notes, chocolate and tobacco coming through at various times. Finish: Long and dense. The feel was really nice with classic pauillac tones of black fruit and pencil/tobacco notes.

Another gem, and last of wine, from Bern's celllar. Honestly you had to be into the vegetable garden notes in this wine, but for me it was so reminiscent of the farms around the medoc that it really connected to the terroir. Elegance of lafite was in there, but there was a more rustic overtone. lovely.

Incredible Steaks & The Immaculate Cellar (Tampa, FL): Nose: Cranberry, Raisin, Chocolate, Cigar, Cedar, Tobacco Palate: High acidity on entry, but that is the vintage character of 23. Strawberry, gravel, sweet tobacco and sweet tarts. Such a nice melange of wood and older fruit with a slightly maderized patina. Finish: Slightly sharp, but rounded out with air.

This low-shoulder bottle would have been DOA out of any other cellar, but showed gorgeously from the 48 degree cellar of Berns.

Tasted a bottle off of Coravin. This is coming along really nicely.

Nose: Bright blackberry, black cherry, graphite, earth and stone notes. Developing nose of a classically styled wine with some dusty sage coming through as well. Palate: Dense and silky, tannin is well resolved for a 2006. Black and Blue fruit notes on entry with sweet coffee, spicy oak and truffle notes. Finish: Moderate finish that is actually quite detailed.

Nose: plum, blackberry, fig, earth and spice. Palate: Classic Cos with black fruit, macerated plum, olive, earth, tobacco and spices. A bit muddy, but excellent feel. Finish: Moderate with some unintegrated oak showing and a bit of drying tannin.

Very nice bottle in its own right, and on any other night this would have been tops. But tonight it played a contrasting part giving context against the PLL and Palmer. Thanks Erik!

1990 Château Palmer

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/18/2015 - RockinCabs Likes this wine: 96 points

Nose: plum, blackberry, black cherry and gorgeous violet notes. Palate: refined power in every sense with elegance to spare. Deep black fruit that comes apart in layers showing cherry pit, plum juice, blackberry jam and tons of truffle and violets. Finish: long dense and deep with all of the secondary tones I love in Palmer.

Consumed next to 82 PLL and we were all shocked at how closely this bottle stacked up. A freak bottle? Perhaps, but I am so pleased to have had it in such rare company with great gentlemen. Thanks Marc!

Nose: kaleidoscopic, red fruit, black fruit, blackberries, toffee, spices, gunpowder, strawberry bubble gum (!), sweet flowers, and tobacco. Every nuance just danced through the nose. Ever evolving through the 5 hours we sat with this. Palate: Patience was required to watch this evolve but paid off in spades. Full, rich, nuanced and every element sang high notes. So elegant and seamless. A melange of berries, spices, earth, chocolate. Though provoking and a joy to drink. Finish: long but not cloying. Deft balance & silky feel with detailed spices, oak, berries, fine cigar, coffee and earth.

Bordeaux does not get better than this. Perfect bottle living up to expectations. One of the greats...

Nose: Black/Red Fruit, Oak, Alcohol and some green pepper. Palate: Give a flashy Red Cherry note on attack with some blackberry jam. Acetone/VA appear and it feels like it either needs to integrate, or is a bit of a mess. Can't tell. Finish: Good licorice, blackberry jam and pepper.

High hope for QPR for an internal team meeting with hard expense policy to meet. Alas, disappointment.

Outstanding blackberry, cassis and black cherry fruit that still contains a nice amount of glycerin and youthful sex appeal (so 2002). Some complexity coming into the wine at this point with gravel and tobacco notes, and not too much aggressive tanin. Based on the quality of the cork my remaining bottle is staying put for a while.

Nose: Coffee, Black Cherry, Chocolate and Sweet Wood notes. Palate: Black Cherry, Chocolate, Tart Berries, Baking Spice. Viscous feel with lots of glycerin. This is hot in the back palate with a flash of alc and spice. Finish: Persistent with Black Cherry, cocoa and spice. Heat almost a bit much here, but fits the style.

Many would rate this higher, but I found it a bit out of balance yet enjoyable
