2014 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah In the Rocks

Walla Walla Valley more

5/5/2024 - Ex-Ray Likes this wine: 98 points

Fifth bottle tasted since 2017, arguably the best. It's still garnet, with no amber edge, but it has become slightly translucent. Powerful aromas typical of this wine, the first Reynvaan we ever tried, vintage 2007. The same Northern Rhone style of roasted meat, toasted French oak, and blackberries. Rich and full on the palate, perfectly balanced, no significant tannin. The finish is long and fabulous. I had thought it might start to decline by now but not at all. Still at its peak, should have several more years there.

I think this is in a great spot right now and I don’t see it improving, though it’s in no immediate risk of going downhill. Lots of spicy raspberry and plum with olives underneath. This may have suffered from following an unbelievable 2014 Horsepower, but this wine was really awesome.

Day 1: A stunner. These Contender wines are off the charts. Minerality streak like no other. Green olives, white pepper, blueberries, earth, stone, slate, tar and violets. Super complex wine and long finish. Great acidity. This should drink well for another five years. 96 points
Day 2: Did not perform as well on day 2. This is a pop and pour and enjoy now. Day 2 offers green olives, stone, earth, violets and bell pepper. The fruit has faded. 88 points
Recommendation: Drink now to 2028.

Smoky raw beef aroma, olive, plum, damp forest. Smell is incredible. Perfectly rounded off smooth tannins. More olive, plum, smokiness on the palate. Medium+ body and a long finish. Loved this one.

Day 1: one of the best Reynvaan wines of this decade and that is a big statement. Green olives, tar, stone, white pepper, blue currants and dried meats. Long finish and super complex. Thankfully have 2 more bottles. 95+ points.
Day 2: A touch better. Exotic spices, green olives, tar, white pepper, dried meats, perfume and blue fruits. Super balanced and smooth wine. This does not have the funkiness of some Rocks wines and for sure very Rhone like on this one. 96 points
Recommendation: Seek out via auction and buy!

A savory meal of coffee rubbed grilled beef, black pepper, blackberry pan sauce. Fine tannins offer enough support.

Loved this. Light with elegance but also power. Definitely more elegant than the early years, but this has the meat/funk that was lacking in 14.
V - Clear medium garnet with medium+ meniscus and high viscosity.
N - Meat, mixed fruit, funk. Plum, black currant and raspberry. Smoked meats, olive, hint of bramble.
P - The Fruit brigtens upon the finish and becomes more cherry. Sourdough, tobacco, bramble, olive. All take their place in line.
Long finish, complex wine, fine/med tannins with Med/Med+ acidity.

Deeply defined dark berry with an amalgam of tart cherries, hibiscus, and dark earth. Layers of complexity, albeit on the dark side of wine drinking. No glamour here! Gritty, hedonistic in a non-sumptuous way, smacked you in da f*cking mouth with a fist full of gravel kinda wine. Pinot drinkers run for the exits! This brings a point to the end of the pencil in its definition and clarity, albeit into the dark waters…

Day 1: Wow wine. When you think best Syrah in the world for under $80 you have Reynvaan in the top 5. This is awesome. Exotic spices, blue fruits, floral, white pepper, lavender and just amazing stuff. 96 points.
Day 2: Left the cork off all night and still amazing experience. Potpourri, green olives, Lavendar, white pepper, blue fruits and minerals. Long finish. 96+ points
Recommendation: This wine is amazing and will drink well through 2032.

Last bottle of 6 consumed over the years. The wine evolved from a dark, tarry, wine of mystery to something more akin to Cote Rotie and now a bit softer. The main adjective to apply is delicious. Both red and blue fruit, a bit of tar remains (lovely!), charred meat, a bit of black olive. Long and lush. If feels entirely mature, so if I had more I’d be looking to drink them in the next 2 or 3 years.

PnP, consumed over three days. Definitely more savory, earth, and spice notes than fruit. A lot of depth to this wine, it was equally good with food (filet mignon) and by itself with plenty to contemplate. No hint of fading, or even peaking. This stayed the course through the several days it sat opened under cork on my kitchen counter.

Day 1: Not as good as in 2023 but still solid. White pepper, minerals, earth, spices and red currants. Complex wine and medium finish. 93 points
Day 2: This is amazing on day 2 and offers what I love about good Syrah. White pepper, red currants, blueberries, minerals, forest floor, earth, spices and tar. Medium plus finish. Balanced wine and nice acidity. No need to hurry on drinking these. 94+ points
Recommendation: Seek and find these at auctions as they can be found for amazing prices.

This is an awesome bottle of wine. I had purchased a a half case of assorted reynvaan wines and this was one of the bottles and it was the best. Dark cherry, plums, currants and hints of spices leasing to a long finish. Just beautiful. Going to see if I can find some more.

75% cab Sauv, 12.5% cab franc & 12.5% Petit Verdot. 20 months in 40% new oak with the rest in first, second and third- use barrels.

This region looks nearly identical to Châteuneuf-du-Pape. "In the rocks" vineyard is planted next to the famous vineyard "En Cerise" which is run by Cayuse (who also produces Bionic Frog).

3h decant. Blackberry, minerality, cassis, black pepper, sandalwood, tobacco, bakers chocolate, hint of smoked meat, mushroom.

Hold for a few more years.

Now that my expectations are set that this was a lighter, more elegant year - I enjoyed this more. Great floral flavors on the palette sitting on top of plum and cherry.

With some grilled steaks. Opened about two hours prior to dinner then drank slowly over the next few hours. The nose is red fruit. The palate as first was all cherry, as time went on the cherry took a back seat and the dark red plums set in with a touch of tobacco and raw meat. The finish was moderate to long.

Seering fruit, acid, mineral. I swear I tasted salt at the finish. Not in a bad way at all but an unusual interesting saline component of its minerality. Paired perfectly with our delayed Valentines dinner of lamb meatballs, carrots, and cheesy mashed potatoes. Dessert was an orange ginger cake which was also a perfect match.

Always enjoyed the Reynvaan offerings, but this was my first time with their Contender. It is co-fermented with Marsanne (as opposed to the traditional Viognier). 97 Syrah/3 Marsanne. Quick one-hour double decant.

I opened this alongside a 2015 No Girls Grenache and while there were obvious similarities in profile, this was distinctly different and the preferred wine from the group. Both sport the classical “funk” of Rocks district Rhône varietals, with perfumed dark florals, black olive and smoked meat. The co-ferment obviously lends toward a more aromatic wine but the palate was even more intriguing. Again, classical notes of peppered strip, spiced raspberries and blackberries, but the texture brought about a sweet-tangy finish as opposed to the typical overly savory profile of similar wines. It’s a note I’ve gotten on older Cote-Rotie wines and I love it. Drinking beautifully. Acidity is still vibrant and food pairs wonderfully at this point. Followed over two days and no change. Pop and enjoy.
