Decanted and needed a half hour of air.

Complex and round but tastes 10 years younger. Drink now or in 5 years

Still with preserved color. Light red to dark red excellent concentration Clean nose. Definite Syrah fruit good balance. Criticism would be lack of complexity on the nose and in the mouth.

Really great, but definitely on the tail end of its life. Bacon fat, tobacco, smoky, charred rosemary, and stewed cherries.

This '90 Sizeranne opened on 12/ 25/ 22 provided a satisfying experience overall, rather than a compelling experience. Still fine, deep color; slight mahogany at edge. Very good aromas with clean fruit immediately upon opening with no bottle stink or off notes. Full body, rich fruit and texture on the palate with red and black currant, red vines rope licorice candy, hint of lavender; fine acid, all in balance, with (still) good grip. Red fruit, juicy acid, and ripe tannin on the balanced, cool finish. Really drinking nicely, perhaps due to being undisturbed since release from a cool cellar. The '90 blanc however from same source and my cellar became excellent (not kidding) dry sherry years ago...why I don't know. I use them for cooking and actually do enjoy drinking them (for what they've become rather than what they were) :). - I have cellared NR Syrahs from the '80's and '90's - Chave, Verset, Jaboulet, Rostaing, Guigal, Clape, and Chapoutier, since release.

Dark fruit (black cherry, slight blueberry), nice spice, earth, floral, slight olive. Good acidity. Lingering finish. Really enjoyable. Some complexity. 91+

Drinking very well now. I said coffee and chocolate, Fernando and Christine said caramel. Good acid, solid finish, light bricking. A touch less body than the 89. The 89 was a slightly better wine, but I enjoyed this more.

Part of a Horizontal tasting of 1990 Red Hermitage wines. All six of these bottles were stored in the same, cold 45 degrees F cellar, since release. The Chapoutier Monier de la Sizeranne Hermitage wine hails from les Bessards, Greffieux and Méal vineyards on the Hermitage Hill. They make a whopping 30000 bottles a year, so it is readily available throughout the planet. This bottle was decanted 30 minutes after opening and poured into Spiegelau burg glasses. Medium dark ruby with browning rim. Morels and and Earl Grey tea on the nose expanding into secondary barnboard, leather and sun dried cherries on the palate. Long finish of Provencal herbs and cocoa. Best now-2030.

At Skinner pre-auction tasting, Newton, Mass.: Quite advanced, with a strong leafy aroma and flavor, brown color, and lots of vanilla. It is still pleasantly drinkable, but if you don't own the bottles, I would advise against buying them, and if you do own the bottles, I would advise opening them.

Double-decanted. Aging notes of sous-bois and dried earth, leather and mushrooms. Fruit is a mix of red and dark berry. Also a bit of black coffee, black tea and a splash of fresh, minty notes. Unfortunately, this couldn’t quite shake off whiffs of slightly oxed Port notes. Palate is a tad thin, but with great harmony and a surprisingly present fruit. This left you with a clearly aged impression and felt a bit tired, although the aromatic complexity was still highly alluring.

Still has dark Ruby color with some cassis on the on the nose and black fruit on the palate. Has held up remarkably well. Drank over 2 nights and the fruit was more prominent on the second night.

It might have been this bottle, or maybe this vintage is finally showing its age. How much you enjoy this would depend on how you like spice notes and secondary flavors as opposed to young fresh fruit. A lot of the fruit in this bottle was gone.

ESTG Northern Rhône: High pitched at first, black pepper, black cherry. Jason thought it was maybe corked, and I too caught some slightly off aromas. However it never seemed like TCA was at work here. If anything, with air this did gain sweetness and depth, nice, not outstanding.

From a magnum……several years to go on this format. One of the evening’s favorites with plenty of fruit and structure. Accompanied cassoulet with duck, lamb, chicken, sausage.

Q4 2021 Wine Club: The Return with Aged Rhone (Our apt): Wine #8: To me this was definitely off - nose of cardboard and while the initial taste is fruit it quickly goes back to the wet cardboard at the finish. Some people were more forgiving of it although it did not merit any votes. (0 pennies)

Rhone Dinner (Circus Private Kitchen, Kimberley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong): No detailed notes but this was fully open for business - fully integrated, great fruit and spice with a touch of CDP funk. One of my favourites of the night. I'd say this has 10 more years to stay on this plateau but it is gorgeous to drink now. Drank alongside the equally enjoyable Ch. La Nerthe Les Cadettes 1990, which was equally good. Thanks for both, Olivier!

Tale of two '90 Hermitages. Decided to open a couple of old Hermitages for a cage match on a cold New England Winters night. '90 Chapoutier Sizeranne vs. '90 Sorrel Hermitage (regular bottling).

Found I noted this last in 2012 and said to drink within 5 years. It is holding on fairly well and is actually remarkably similar to that note.

Color/App: still medium(okay/med/light) ruby core -> diffuse garnet rim - showing more depth but also more garnet at the rim than its rival, the '90 Sorrel. Bouquet also more reticent than the Sorrel but still showing some nice elements with leather, singed cherries, herbs de provence and a touch of brown sugar. Palate is more clunky than the Sorrel, more foursquare, showing a bit of barnyard, olives, cherries and plums. Moderately long finish but not as expressive as the Sorrel, this falls back a bit from that wine but will probably last a bit longer. Hell, it's made it 30 years, I'm sure it will make it a few more, though I can't see any improvement from here.

Slow oxed for one hour. This has a terrific nose of violets, tobacco and black pepper. The wine is surprisingly youthful and fresh. Lovely flavors of plums and raspberry, roast meats and spices. There are layers of flavor and a long complex finish. Fully mature but can continue to evolve this hits it out of the park for its level.
