Wine Dinner Extravaganza (David Burke's Primehouse - Chicago IL): This wine just keeps getting better with more time. Black cherry, berry aromas and flavors with roasted meat, licorice and great depth with near-perfect balance. Great today, this was consensus WOTN, with lots of upside.

drank alongside the 99 Chambertin, and after two magical Beze from 90/91. I thought this sensational, and on any other night would have been a standout, though in this group it got edged out. I concur with the thought Bill expressed that 99 is on a great trajectory and it's not hard to chart the path of where these will be in 10 years. If I owned this I'd probably take my time watching it evolve. More feminine than the Chambertin but that wine it beginning to hit on all cylinders and I thought a bit more generous

Rousseau Chambertin v Rousseau Clos de Beze vertical battle - WHO WILL REIGN SUPREME!? (Jonathan Club): airy dark cherry and baked spice with some vanilla - the fruit is pure with grainy tannin. There’s a warmness and beauty to the dark black fruit that brings a gorgeous inner perfume on the palate. Isn't as detailed and precise as the Chambertin is, but seems just a few years back in development but will get to the same point soon.

Saturday lunch with Eddie (Masseria, DC): Expressive nose displaying ripe black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, black cherry a hint of raspberry, mocha, rose, dark spices, liquid smoke and earth. Excellent concentration, packed blackberry and black cherry, chewy yet silky and polished, bright acidity, noticeable but sweet tannins and a long deeply toned roasted black fruit and mocha driven finish. It remains very youthful and structured. Needs another decade or more to reach the youthful peak.

I might as well say it right away, here we are touching the quintessence of Burgundy.

The nose is an infusion of dried flowers, orange peels, truffles and undergrowth.
The palate is enchantingly pure, with a hint of crushed strawberries, rose petals, and sweet spices. It's soft, incredibly complex, a light cream that lines everything that touches. The juice is aristocratic, it is vaporous, yet has an unmistakable presence. The wine imposes itself. Everything is integrated, nothing protrudes, structure and complexity are present with a magnificent acidic frame, we can detect the soya aeration, it does not stop, the texture is silky as possible, and these rose petals which are present no matter what when you think you detect a different flavor ...

So many emotions! It is neither the most powerful nor the most demonstrative wine - it is never the case with Rousseau - but this infusion of rose petal, with spices, is simply masterful. Final truffled in peacock tail over a kilometer length.

There is everything one asks for in a pinot: texture, depth, purity, complexity of flavors… Air power. It's big.

Snuck in at the end of a big ’99 horizontal and in many ways stole the show and was the favourite wine of the night for several. The nose on this has such distinctive earth influence, soil, and spice all wrapped up in sweet red cherry in a light effortless delivery that still packs power and density. Distinct Gevrey and Chambertin rusticity and darker spice. Texturally distinct too. Overall clean and pure, focused, but with a soulful and authentic earth aspect just off in the background. Amazing from every aspect. Detailed and highly expressive aromatics, delicious and complex palate that is absolutely brilliant right now but which shows no signs of slowing down. Very impressive. A big thank you to Captain Coche for taking this down and getting it in the mix. Near perfection tonight.

Simply beautiful wine. Very pretty but powerful. There are notes of meat and earth coupled with black fruits and an engaging thread of flora. It is full, complex and luscious in the mouth with a velvety texture and great volume. Concentration and length are superb. Pretty close to wine of the day for mine.

Desmond's Birthday Dinner (St Pierre, Singapore): This was a little jarring after the quartet of nicely developed reds that preceded it. While a very good wine indeed, I think it still needs several more years in the bottle before really showing. It had a beautiful nose though, soaring out of the glass with fragrant wafts of red cherries and raspberries touched with bramble and spice and flowers, all patted down with a bit of earth. Wow. The palate was unfortunately less charming (excuse the pun). On first pour after half-an-hour in a decanter, what stood out was very bright, racy acidity, rather unusually so for a 1999, and then bright red cherries and chewy raspberry flavours, laced with orangey citrus notes and a waft of roses. Nice flavours. This came across as a very substantial Charmes, with plenty of stregth, but such was the freshness on it that it still came across very elegantly - a marriage of power with grace if you will. At the moment though, it is also one of those 1999s that still carry quite a bit of primary fruit on the attack, but seem a bit shut down towards the finish. There was length to burn for sure, but it was just a bit thin on flavours on the backpalate, showing sublte notes of mineral and spice built upon still rather firm tannins. Impressive, but even with time in the decanter and in the glass, and paired with some meat, this was clearly not ready. Try again after 2016.

Slightly cloudy garnet in colour. Highly expressive nose of bright red cherry, blackberry, some cranberry, rosy florals, chai teas, and subtle smoke. Incredibly pure overall, clean, very little Gevry rusticity, although terroir and faint soily tones are present under the brilliant fruit. The purity and balance of the complete picture here is indicative of the highest levels of Rousseau wines and this is not far off the effortlessness of the straight Chambertin. Brilliant.

My third time with this wine and it's obviously really good but feels like this is just still 5-10 years too young before it truly reveals it's beauty. In CSJ vertical 88/94/95/96/99/07. I think there are a lot of other nearby vintages you rather open today (e.g. 95-98, 00)

Once again, the fresh cellar + 1999 combo bought at the domain struck again.

Very complex nose, restrained. It first made me think of a beautiful Piedmontese Nebbiolo, with spice and dried flowers, a pinch of herbs and earthy aromas on a background of black fruits.

Note that the wine was linear from its opening to the end of the bottle, no notable evolution. The set is still very young as often with a well preserved 1999!

In the mouth, it's simple: it's a symphony. It starts with the touch, enveloping and silky, the juice first coats the mouth to allow the wine to hatch with serenity. The texture of the wine is breathtaking, it is classy and racy, in a word: a lord. Then there is the depth of the wine, with delicate earthy aromas, coffee, a still juicy fruit, these subtle spices then an animal side in all finesse and elegance. And then there is the balance: the wine sings, more delicate than the Clos Saint Jacques from the same vintage, it imposes itself by an extraordinary presence, with a diaphanous tension. The finish is grandiose, always this powdery texture oscillating between dried flower and sweet spices, fantastic length that stretches endlessly...

Great Burgundy, a noble wine. 1999 evolves very slowly!

Hawksmoor Steak Lunch- Deep dark color, looked very young, on the nose you still get a bit of the barrel wood but it is mostly dark cherries and dark berries. this wine made me sit up and take notice and of all the 3 rousseau's at the table it somehow managed to stand out. it fills the mouth with layers and layers of dark fruit, spicy and sweet but still perfectly balance and very. this wine is young, has a long way to go but is delicious and am sure will be amazing in 10+ years

Tasted at Schwarzwaldstube, I had this bottle opened 3 hours before dinner. The wine had a deep red center with light red/orange rims. The high+ intensity nose offered up cola, clove, brown spices, black cherries, and some plum.

In the mouth, this wine was very attractive with its light weight and high impact flavors. It went through a variety of stages. At first it was quite rich and a touch flabby. Latter, it was a bit lean and showed some “spikey” acidity. Eventually, it blossomed to show a gorgeous creamy texture, fine-grained acidity, and outstanding length.

This wine was so attractive that it could appear fully mature. I would agree that it has entered its window, however, it seems to me that this could still use a bit more time in the cellar. This wine was dark and mysterious. It may, or may not, be ready. It will certainly last for 10-15 more years.

Just so incredibly beautiful! I am torn between rating it 96 and 97, I know many rated it 97. From a pristine bottle (of two) bought by me upon release, I know it had perfect provenance. And it showed! I had the other bottle in 2007 where it outperformed a great 1999 Grivot Richebourg, so my expectations were high! And they were met. This showcases why you age the greatest wines, I suppose, though nothing was out of place ten years ago either. That still goes, as this wine is resolved, yet full of energy, tension and nerve with seemingly at least ten and probably closer to twenty years still left in it. Displaying a great and complex mix of primary and tertiary flavours with the secondary winemaking related notes only playing beautifully background. Great bottle. Why did I only buy two again?

Domaine Armand Rousseau Clos de Beze and Clos des Ruchottes dinner (Conrad Hotel, Singapore): Incredible. This took awhile to get going. It started out really tight and clenched, even more so than the 1999 Ruchottes that preceded it, but bit by bit, it opened up and relaxed in the glass, so that one managed to catch glimpses of just how great a wine it will be one day towards the end of the evening. There was lots going on with the nose even on first pour - a bit of charcoal smoke, some dill and mint, wood spice and herb, with an underlayer of clear, ripe dark cherry fruit bedded oo a stream of chalky mineral and earthy aromas. A lot of stuffing, but one got a feel that it was still tight, with plenty more to come. Indeed, with time, the fruit came out more and more, showing in a melange of red and black cherry scents seasoned with a lovely waft of smoky minerality. Still tight, but attractive nonetheles. It was the palate that knocked my socks off though. This had so much richness and power, just layer after deep layer of velvety textured goodness that unfolded in flavours dark cherries and blackberries lined with a serious minerality and a meaty, earthy depth. Power indeed, but this was wed to typical Rousseau finesse and tied to an impeccable sense of balance - the archetypal iron fist in a velvet glove. It was certainly still very tight, with lots of coiled up substance couched in its noble structure, but even then, there was a certain wild, impetuous energy dancing around in there somewhere. It required a lot of patience not to drink it all up within the first half hour. We thankfully did not because, with time, it started opening up and fanning out, showing wells of beautiful clarity with pure red cherry fruits sprinkled with a bit of musk as the wine pulled away into a beautifully long, perfectly integrated and almost profoundly deep finish. Just beautiful stuff. This was a real thoroughbred. It needs another 10 years easily, but there is so much going on here even now. It needs time, but wait for it - this will be mindblowing at peak.

A small glass pnp before a dinner non blind I noted: loamy, bay leaf, savoury, beef blood, iron and earth, deep gravely, black fruit with a touch of Earl's gray tea.

Then left the bottle slow-ox for 6 hours and was served blind within 11 other vintages of Rousseau CSJ. Noted then: High acidity, cranberry, some silky vanilla oak kiss, real sap and persistence. Seemed younger with some air interestingly and conclusion was that this will be along ager and belongs among the pantheon of Rousseau CSJ vintages. To me among top 3 of the night just behind the 1990 and 2010, but very close to those. 96+
