Not sure which has changed since my first bottle: my palate or the wine. Just starting to pick up some tertiary aromas and flavors. Red fruits are muted but give some lingering sweetness. I am going to hold off for a while, it because it wasn’t good but because I’m excited to see where this is in a few years.

Lightly aromatic of earth, boysenberry, black plum, cough syrup and oak. Med-full bodied, this is soft and pliant for a young Bordeaux. Med-bodied, this is round and supple and drinking well now. Drink now-2028+ 90

Cassis, dark berries and plums on the nose, with and undercurrent of oak, minerals, and a hint of spice and floral notes. Palate mirrors the nose, medium bodied, smooth tannins, medium acidity, with a slightly drying medium finish.

Stunning. Bonfire smells right after pulling cork. Pnp - a ton of acidity, only slight oak on nose. As air hits, cherries and pomegranates show up in the back of the palate. Long and I mean long finish.

Will edit after decant.

Lots of sediment. DD for about 30 mins. Drinking well. Balanced - tannins and alcohol tamed. This tied for second place (out of 10 wines) at the friends "bottle challenge". Several bottles were more than 2x the price! Brad - heavypourwine.com

Really very good. I tried this wine 18 months ago and I did not decant it for long enough.

Decanted 12 hours. It made a big difference. Really nicely balanced and savoury. Soft tannins (due to the long decanting). Dusty graphite, tobacco and cherry.

This will go on nicely for another 10 years or drink now with a good decant.

Intense blueberry fruit, peppery spice, iron and iodine minerality, minty or eucalyptus elements and even hints of Chrstiman spice. Fresh and fruit-forward palate, still pretty wild and rustic and needs another up to 10yrs I would guess. But a beauty already today.

1996 Château Cos d'Estournel

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/10/2024 - Lype Likes this wine: NR

In a recent Cos vertical tasting comprising various vintages between 1985-2000 the top three wines stood out clearly. Surprisingly to me, the 1996 got Bronze and felt maybe even a bit of a let down (age-wise) between the accessible and ripe but classy 1990 and the unbelievably beautifully structured, still developing, 2000. Where does the 1996 go as a standalone item? To put it short, this a stairway to heaven. What we have got here is classic Left Bank profile, cassis, pencils shavings, smoke, fresh plums and earth. Still present tannins and wood gradually melting into the mix. The acidity as good as it gets - a defining feature of any excellent 1996 Left Banker, something that really ties the package together. Royal and excellent finish. This is breathtakingly good and will get even better with time. Post scriptum: the indie chart winners of the vertical probably were the unsung hero 1985, which has always drank well and the 1988, which had the lure of austere but tempting Bdx vintages.

Pop and pour. Lovely nose with red cherry, black cherry flavors. Clean ruby color. Medium intensity. Acidity is medium. The fruit aroma is reasonable and the tannin structure is relatively soft. After half an hour of drinking, the taste becomes smoother. This is a great wine at a competitive price. Compared to vintage 2016, 2018 has more of a new world style.

The 2019 Cos d'Estournel emerges after only a few minutes in the glass, Falstaffian - jolly and round, brimming with grape preserves, plum, pomegranate, freshened by a graphite mineral edge. As round as this is in the mouth, its acidity maintains an enticing drinkability. I don't think this will take particularly long to drink with pleasure, but its symmetry and stuffing should also allow for a long life. 95-96

Give this wine an hour in the glass or the decanter and it will evolve into a superb wine. Cassis, black cherry a small dose of pepper, but altogether very smooth. Can still be found for about 30€. Excellent value (93+)

Semi blind tasting flight of 6. Blind for the rest of our group.
2014 DuMol Finn, 2009 Jaboulet Chapelle, 1988 Sandrone Cannubi, 1999 Tignanello, 2014 Cos d'Estournel and 2017 Penfold St Henri

This one was decanted 3 hours in advance. Cedar and plum fruit points to left bank. Relatively open. This was the wine that developed most in the glass improving significantly. Fine fruit, fine tannins and good acidity gives a very nice balance. Drinkable for sure and if you prefer younger versions of Bordeaux this vintage seems good for it.
I suspect the reason for only 5th place out of thesse six wines were the tannins. My no 3 but lifting maybe to the best of the 6 by the end.
This wine was supposed to be tasted side by side with 1990 Cos but that bottle was unfortunately badly corked.

2015 Château Cos Labory

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/9/2024 - Poussin Likes this wine: 91 points

Personally, I think the consensus rates this a touch too low. Lots of correct Medoc character, with graphite/pencil shavings and a tiny bit of funk/barnyard. The palate has a lovely seam of acidity and plenty of dark fruit…this is not an austere wine! That said, the tannins are still rather foresquare. I think it could handle another few years in the cellar. Canny buy by Qatar Airways at a time when all the airlines seem to be downgrading their wine offerings. 91-92

As soon as the cork is pulled, the '20 Cos shows a reticent but characterful nose of boysenberry, pomegranate, and plum with a slightly spicy edge, gaining and astonishing aromatic generosity, voluptuous bordering on corpulent with an hour of air yet never becoming top-heavy. Very cool and intense in the 2020 way, dry extract and plenty of tannin but with the acid to match. By 12 hours, the pomegranate coming tot he fore with an exotic spice element and shaved pencil. Finishing well. Muscled and fat simultaneously, like a sumo wrestler. 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 13.5% ABV on the bottle.

95-96, drinking from around age 25
