Consistently good NV brut. Brioche, strawberries, vanilla and yellow Sunburst (my least favourite, but it works here). Current bottling is somewhat lighter than what I remember from the past, but still great!

Okay, it's mostly worth the hype, if somewhat overpriced. I'd probably let it go for another 4-5 years at least (if I bought another bottle).

Good ol' VC Ponsardin; consistently pleasing, if nothing to write home about.

Simple but GREAT Rioja. Mocha, oak, dark cherry, well-balanced tannin and acidity, drinking perfectly in early 2012.

This Champagne tastes like apple pie. It's awesome. I love it.

Other notes: white grapefruit, excellent acidity balance.

Lots of green apple, cider and white grapefruit. Good mousse/integration. Ever-so-slightly too acidic for my taste, but a good QPR regardless.

Bleh. Do not want. Basically nothing but butterscotch, and not in a good way. Poorly-integrated mousse. Very one-dimensional. Not worth the alcohol, imo.

A very well-made NV Champagne. Excellent mousse, good acidity balance, yeast and biscuits on the nose with strawberry and pear on the palate. Highly recommended.

Incredible nose of straw, cheese and "barnyard". Good acidity and fruit (green apple) on the palate, but not very well integrated. Very large bubbles with, again, a not very well integrated mousse. Still, very drinkable and quite interesting.

2006 Clos du Bois Marlstone

Alexander Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

10/16/2011 - missesthe90s wrote: 90 points

Pretty damn good, which surprised me because I don't care for much else from Clos du Bois (or any industrial-sized CA producer). Fat, plum-y fruit, cedar, tobacco, and a bit of toasted vanilla from the oak. Acidity is there, but not quite enough to really make it food-friendly. It's more of a quaffer... but a very good one. Recommend another 2ish years in the cellar as the tannins need a bit more time to mellow out.

Wow. Intense floral notes on nose and palate -- primarily honeysuckle. Medium body with good acidity balance even after nearly a decade in the cellar. Peaches and lemons. Wonderful example of a Riesling from Pfalz.

A pretty okay NV Champagne, but but just okay -- nothing spectacular. Lemon, straw and tart apple on the palate. Good acidity. Lacking in yeast and complexity next to similarly-priced NV. Would not buy this again.

7/11/2011 - missesthe90s Does not like this wine: 80 points

Sadly underwhelming on the second try. Excellent showing at the winery, but fell flat after about 8 months in the cellar. Diluted, lifeless, not able to stand up to much of anything in terms of food. Interesting strawberry note on both the nose and palate, but not much else.

2007 Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie

Syrah more

7/11/2011 - missesthe90s Likes this wine: 95 points

This is the most well-balanced and well-made Côte-Rôtie that I've ever tasted. Tart cherry and fig on the palate and a wonderful floral aroma from the Viognier. Drinking very well right now, but could potentially benefit from another 2-3 years in the cellar. Highly, highly recommended.

Nice, simple, inoffensive Gewurz. Probably can't stand up to food without a bit more acidity. But still, this is a well-made summer sippin' wine.

Blackberries, prunes and briar patch. High-alcohol content overpowering at first but it burns off after about an hour in a decanter. Nice, fruity quaffer, but doesn't have the acidity structure to stand up to anything more than cheese and baguette, imo.

2008 Massolino Barbera d'Alba

more

6/6/2011 - missesthe90s Likes this wine: 93 points

This remains one of my favorite Barbera d'Alba. Cool, forest-y, berry notes on the palate (primarily blackberry and cherry) with a very slight hint of raisin and prune -- not entirely unlike a Valpolicella Ripasso. Also a slight earthy-ness, and again, you get the distinct impression of pine forest.

Tannin/fruit/acidity balance is near perfect. Meant to go with food, and drinking very well right now.

Paired beautifully with Spaghetti alla Carbonara. :-)
