5/19/2021 - mhudes wrote: 98 pointsOutside dining at Juanita & Maude's in Albany. 6 hour decant. Served blind to Charles, Walter and Michael. Purple in color. Very aromatic. Bold prune, dried apricot and dried fig flavors. Long finish. All guess vintage Port (but all at least 2 decades too young). Almost certain to still be great in 2030. A profound Port! |

2/7/2021 - mhudes Likes this wine: 92 pointsWatching Super Bowl with Walter. Decanted for 3 hours. Served along side a 1990 La Lagune to accompany a savory pork loin roast that Walter had made. Cigar box and cedar on the nose. In the mouth we do have some fruit (dark cherry and plum), but primarily tobacco, earth tones, and nuances of meat. Initially, ight to medium body, it added substantial weight throughout the game. Although it never quite reached the level of the 1990 La :agune, this was a delicious wine, nonetheless. |

12/26/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 92 pointsWith leftover holiday dinner. Pale yellow in color. Lemon zest and apple on the nose. In the mouth, sweet white peaches, citrus, a nuance of slate and a touch of salt. Nice acidity sweetness balance. Likely to become even more complex over the next decade, but too delicious a food wine to currently resist. |

11/15/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 94 pointsSunday Football with Walter (49'ers vs Saimts). 2.5 hour decant. Bright red in color. Floral (lavender?) aromatics. Dark cherries, black currents and raspberries on the palate (Surprisingly fruity for this age). Tingling spices and herbs in the background. A touch of mocha. Tannin essentially subsided. Still a bit of acidity. Lengthy finish. A beautiful wine! |

11/15/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 92 pointsSunday Football with Walter (49'ers vs Saimts). 2.5 hour decant. Brownish purple in color. Heavy cherry cough syrup on the nose. Bold flavors of dark cherry licorice amd leather on the palate. There is a barnyard nuance (Beaucastel like, not unpleasant to me).Full bodied with some tannin still remaining. Big finish. I enjoyed it. |

11/12/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 93 pointsAlong with Danny, celebrating Estie's birthday at home. We have take-out from China Village in Albany. Medium yellow in color. Aromatics of white stone fruit. White nectarines, poached pears and a bit of citrus on the palate. Bold. Nice sweetness-acidity trade off. Good finish. Certainly an excellent companion with our dinner. |

11/5/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 93 pointsThursday Night Football with Walter (49'ers vs Seahawks). Walter brings this and indicates it had been decanted for 2 hours. Purple red in color. Nice nose, but to me it is initially reticent on both the nose and palate. After an additional hour, it begins to blossom with a flowery nose and dark fruit in the mouth. Some of the inital chalkiness remains. I save some for my dinner the next day. |

11/5/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 90 pointsThursday night Football with Walter (49'ers vs Seahawks). Two hour decant. Medium red color. Floral nose. Initially surprising dark fruit on the palate followed by the expected earth, leather and garrigue. Medium body with tannin subsided. Went nicely with grilled cheese sandwiches and meatballs. After 90 minutes, it began to fade a bit. Still a very nice drink that may have peaked a little earlier. |

10/18/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 94 pointsSunday afternoon football with Walter (49'ers vs Patriots). Two hour decant. Served along side the 1989 Sociando-Mallet. violet purple in color. Black currents on the nose. Somewhat muted flavors of dark fruit on the palate. Unlike the 1989, initially this wine seemed closed and a bit chalky, but after 90 minutes, the chalkiness disappeared and this blossomed into something wonderful,. Flavors of blackberries, cocoa, and red licorice. Herbs and cedar in the background. This was the reverse of many of my 1989 vs 1990 Bordeaux tastings where typically the 1990 js immediately great, and the 1989 opens later. Both were very good, but I suspect this 1990 may go another 5-10 years. |

Nice finish but faded a bit after an additional 3 hours. |

10/4/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 93 pointsWatching Sunday Night Football with Walter (Eagles vs. 49'ers). Decanted 3 hours before serving. During decant perfumey aroma wafted through the kitchen. Purple-ruby in color. On the palate, I get dark fruit i.e. blueberries, cassis, but particularly dark cherries (I might have guessed Pinot Noir if tasting blind).Walter tastes cinnamon-nutmeg, perhaps allspice. This is a supple velvety wine yet complex. Good finish. Delicious. I believe this wine is at peak, but could stay there for some time. |

9/20/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 92 pointsWatching the 49'ers vs Jets injury brigade with Walter (wearing masks, social distance). 2 hour decant. Purple in color. On the nose I get dark fruit and a little cigar box. Initially somewhat tannic and chalky, but after 20 minutes, this subsides. On the palate, I get cassis, blueberries and a bit of leather. Walter says "cinnamon", similarly I'm thinking nutmeg. Walter says "the peak may have been a year ago". Because of the initial tannin,I'm thinking the peak may be a year away. We'll see. Still, a very nice wine for a California cabernet from the "troubled" 1998 vintage. |

Sweetness nicely balanced with a bit of acidity. Hopefully, a sweeter year ahead. |

Ordered Italian takeout from Little Star in Albany, so I decided to open 2 nice Italian wines (had this along side a 1999 Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello). Decanted two hours before serving. Bright red in color. Red roses on the nose. Dark cherries, chocolate and red licorice on the palate. Flamboyant with many complexities in the background, Tastes young. Excellent finish. 8/28/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 92 pointsWith family, enjoying take-out from China Village in Albany. PnP. (opened along side a 2003 Donnhoff Spatlese.) Straw gold in color. Lemon zest and apples on the nose. In tje mouth I get honeydew melon, citrus with some minerlity (slate ?) in the background. Nicely balanced with good acidity, a measure of sweetness and that purity I look for in Donnhoff's Rieslings. This most likely has many years to gp. |

A bit sweeter than Spatlese, but not dessert wine like. Excellent balance. A touch of gravel in the background, but I suspect additional minerality will show itself in future years. Long finish. We loved this wine. |

7/29/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 92 pointsWow! What a surprise. This bottle was given to me by my son and daughter-in-law (who live in Oregon) on my last birthday. I love Oregon pinot noir, but I was unfamiliar with this producer (and the vintage was unheralded). PnP at home with dinner from Gregoires in Berkeley. Medium ruby in color with red and dark berries on the nose. Initially slightly acidic, but this blew off quickly adding body and depth within minutes. Cherries, black raspberries and pomegranate on the palate with baking spices and other complexities in the background. Good finish. Almost as good the second night with only the finish being a bit shorter. |

Wine just as good, but notes a bit different from those I posted in December. Floral nose. No hoi sin, but certainly raspberry-blackberry overtone. Initially smooth and somewhat lush, but various CdP complexities arrived over time. It just got better throughout the evening. |

5/9/2020 - mhudes Likes this wine: 90 pointsPnP from half bottle with dinner. A tad darker than typical pinot. Initially hesitant on the nose, but opened nicely after a few minutes. A little black cherry in the mouth with some earth and background complexities arriving a bit later. Nicely balanced, and seemed full bodied to me. Good now, but likely to improve. |
