This was a lot more elegant than I would have expected from 2018 NSG. Red fruit, flowers, supple tannins giving a sikly smooth texture, spice, moderately long finish; very perfumed wine.

A mild rose Champagne, with some orange, faint red fruit, apple, yeast, high acidity and a moderately lengthy finish. I don't think this needs further time, as I didn't think it had a lot of intensity of fruit.

Post Crucifixion 2021, Bierzo Spain
Enchanting nose of flora, violets, mixed of ripe and fresh fruits, cherries, strawberries and sour plum, fresh herbs. Smooth transition and inviting entry, palate mainly echo the nose, lots of hidden characters still hidden under as the wine is still at her youth. Refine tannins with sufficient acidity in balanced, with some sweet spice and herbs within. Medium to full and substantial length in the finished. Approachable now to enjoy her beautiful flora nose or cellar for 4-5 years to uncover her hidden characters. 93-95 Pts

Labet and cheese, this was a magic combination. Baby Vin Jaune but still very fresh (and persistent!) on the palate. Quite approachable and expressive, good acidity, some lemony fruit, nuts, saltiness… yum. 92 points for now.

In the decanter, starting drinking immediately and finished over 3 hours. Little bits of sweet redcurrant, however heavily masked by lead, tobacco leaf and cigar box. Quixote one dimensional and a tad boring unfortunately. Drink over the next 18 months, it is unlikely to develop.

Highly appealing perfume of ripe berries, muddled flower petals, live herbs, and mineral ores. Similar in body and style to the same producers 'Tradition' label, yet it offers a little more of everything. Likely to evolve for several years and peak around 2030-2032.

Pretty much similar to my last note. It is a nice wine, perhaps not my preferred style but it did very well with steak.

Perfume of purple berries, bramble, root vegetables, green peppercorns, and mineral ores. Driving purple fruits and berries, bracing and expansive middle, intensely gripping back, complex finish of considerable length. The wine's restraint and substance require patience. Recommend checking on bottles round or about 2030-2032.

Beware the tannins!

Dry, with some phenolics reminiscent of smoke and of plastic. Reminded me of some aged South African Riesling I bought many moons ago. 12.5% ABV.

Veeery nice Givoanni Rosso from Serralunga. Silky smooth with nice aftertaste. Low on tannins, rich, fruity. Works with or without food. Not the best Barbera ever, but a veru nice option to Nebbiolo if you want something to drink today and not wait 20 years.

I really liked the 2013 Roagna Barolo (am I starting to like Italian wine now?!). Typically Nebbiolo, some sandy tannins (but elegant!), cherry, earth, strawberry, some leather and cedar. Nice!

A friend txt'ed early in the morning about meeting for dinner, sharing a quartet of wines of which the '19 Chambertin was the centerpiece. Definitely too good an opportunity to pass, especially since the Rousseaus were priced at almost half their market-prices. Served beside the '21 Gevrey village, this was almost day-night different. It was as if the village had everything dialed up/amplified by a few folds. Spice/sandalwood & dark/black berries/currants dominated the nose. In the mouth, this showed unbelievable concentration of layered, pure black-fruits encased in a sensual & velvety robe, with the tannins & structure hidden beneath. Incredibly young, no doubt, but definitely enjoyable. If there's any detracting element, it was just the nose which showed a slight bit of wood influence, but otherwise, an incredible wine which should gain even more complexity with cellar age...

Really loving Gauditiabois. This E2 from magnum had a touch more caramel and oxidative notes than the younger E3 tried earlier, but still was quite fresh.

This was unfortunately a very disappointing showing, a lean and mean left bank Bdx with a robust structure but not much fruit at all. A 3h decant might have helped but the wine left us all puzzled.

A bit sweeter than I would have expected, some honey, peaches, lemon, flowers, mango, high acidity (but perhaps just slightly not enough to give that tension one would look for).

Own bottle. This was as expected the fun pairing with the 89 Calon Segur and guesses double blind mostly around Right Bank Bdx, but I was secretly hoping for a bit more from this wine as this was a perfect bottle with an in neck fill and a barely stained cork. Still rich dark fruit but lacked in complexity and depth even when compared to the good but not great Calon Segur. On the positive side this is good for another 15 years in my eyes as the rest of the bottle did not move a bit 24h later.

A wonderful example of aged Coonawarra Cabernet, drinking beautifully. This was a magnum, sadly the last magnum in my cellar of this lovely wine from a fabulous vintage. If you have a 750ml bottle, I’d suggest drinking soon as this wine will probably not get any better from here.

Similar to the last bottle I think this probably needs a little more time. This time we decanted the bottle but this was still a little tannic, softened up but obviously needs more cellaring.

Next up was this pair of Rousseaus (non-blind) - this '21 Gevrey village & the '19 Chambertin. Greeted almost immediately by a beautiful/perfumy bouquet of red-berries, spice & some roses. Very easy (perhaps too easy) on the palate, this was extremely pure & lifted with more red-berry fruits. As opposed to the Chambertin, this definitely seemed a tad light-footed, but nonetheless, a very pretty wine and most enjoyable!

Close your eyes and it is Mersault — rich tropical fruit and dense chewy texture. A little reserved day 1, but after 24 hours, lime juice and zest came out firing. Maybe needs a little time to show its full potential.

Blinded alongside the Sous le Dos d'Âne, this showed/nosed more Puligny (w/ white florals coming to the fore after airing in glass). Had the domaine & appellation correct but the vintage wrong for both. 😂 Similarly (slight oily) textured, this was also slightly more layered with seemingly (just) a bit more extract/concentration. Again, a very delicious & enjoyable start to the evening!

Blinded. This was paired side-by-side the '20 O. Leflaive Champ Gain. Served cold, this took a while to open up. Both wines seemed to have the same maker signature (or perhaps it was also the similar vintage at play). Citrusy nose initially, with more reductive notes of struck match, toast, sesame wafting forth as it aired in the glass. On the palate this showed more of that "salty" minerality as opposed to the Champ Gain. Both had very good mouthfeel, with a slight tinge of that "oily" texture. A very nice start to our dinner!

At, or slightly past its peak, certainly very mature. This is rich and ripe, with superb oak nuance, but also has a nice crisp acidity which keeps things focused. Multi-dimensional, cloves, a touch of banana and pineapple lump (a candy), ripe pear, very vanilla. Lovely wine. But drink up….

Lovely mature or close to fully wine. Plums, cassis, spices - feel the 2003 heat made an extra powerful version that is properly burnings its candle in both ends. But it’s lovey now and probably won’t get any better with further ageing

Sufficient Typicity to guess it was a Rioja, brambly fruit, slightly smoky barbecue meatiness , hint of vanilla oak. Quite a heavy full on style for a Riserva and needed food, in this case, pork. A few years left in this yet.

Over three days in the glass.
The wine comes from vines over 90 years old. It was matured 100% in Mosel fuder cask.

On the first day, a strong Sponti stinker came out of the bottle. I then decanted the wine and put it back in the fridge open.

On the two following days, the tone was more subtle, with a little stall still noticeable; the wine otherwise offers a restrained, very beautiful nose of yellow, ripe apples, a few citrus fruits and white flowers; a little rosemary and wet stone are also noticeable.

On the crystal-clear palate, the yellow, ripe fruit with a slate-like minerality initially pushes forward discreetly. In the middle, the wine has a deep substance with a light creaminess and a fine sweetness. The powerful, yet ripe and round acidity that follows corresponds with the creaminess and sweetness of the body in such a balanced way that I have rarely experienced in a Kabinett. The wine has a perfect inner balance and is very elegant and harmonious.

A great Kabinett with a great price-performance ratio! The wine is already nice to drink now, but can also be kept and matured for many years to come.
