This really packs a punch. It's tightly wound, spicy and powerful. It will be interesting to see how it matures over time. Its alcohol content of 15.5% is not noticeable from taste but does fatigue the palate over time. The 2020 doesn't possess the elegance that I associate with Janasse Chaupin, but I have a strange feeling that it may surprise us over time. I'm letting the rest of my bottles rest for at least another five years.

Frankly, this is very 2012, but in a good way. Expressive and autumnal on the nose with depths of dried black cherries, cloves, allspice and hints of split pine, all lifted by mentholated herbs. It's silky, nearly fleshy in feel, with ultra-ripe strawberry and blueberry compote balanced by zesty acidity under an air of violet pastile. A bit of heat pokes out, yet I find it forgivable, as the 2012 finishes remarkably fresh yet long, leaving salted licorice and hints of balsamic spice to fade slowly. I don't see this getting any better with time. Drink up.

2020 00 Wines Clos de la Roche Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir (view label images)
The 2020 Clos de la Roche is youthfully understated, with a nuanced blend of cinnamon sticks and rosehips. Soothingly round and pure in style, this boasts masses of tart red berry fruits complicated by savory herbs, all offset by a twang of sour citrus. It finishes long and staining but only lightly structured, leaving a cheek-puckering concentration and hints of licorice.

The 2020 Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Ile des Vergelesses is remarkably pretty and perfumed with vivid strawberries complicated by savory herbs. It’s round and lifted in style with crunchy red berry fruits and a subtle mineral staining that slowly builds. The 2020 is long and potent, with a gentle tug of fine tannins and a licorice tinge that slowly fades. Already a pleasure to taste, this should be even better in two to three years time.

This is a pleasure bomb yet harmonious from start to finish. The 2014 Petite Sirah from Palisades Vineyard wafts up with an intense yet utterly seductive bouquet of blueberry compote, violet pastille, cool mint and a dusting of cocoa. Powerful and large-scaled yet immaculately balanced, this impresses further with its racy and mouthwatering personality, guided by zesty acidity that enlivens the tart wild berry fruits and sour citrus tones that tease the palate with cheek-picking tension. These tannins are perfectly formed, round and sweet, as the 2014 drinks beautifully already, yet in no fear of decline with a long and potent finale featuring raspberry preserves, sage and dark chocolate.

This is a total mineral and acid bomb. Masses of slate and limestone, cooling smoke, lime zest, chlorophyll, sage and Granny Smith apple keep the 2016 Kupp Riesling Faß 18 Großes Gewächs is a total seductress to this Reisling lover. It blends mineral and acid tension with ripe green melon and penetrating citrus over a dense wave of oily textures, and yet this remains perfectly fresh and lively throughout. If you can call it a finish, the finish is remarkably fresh with a liquid stone quality with nuances of mint, sage, and kiwi throughout, as the mouth is left thirsting for more. The 2016 is incredible today, but this wine still has years of evolution in store for patient collectors. Check in now only if you have multiple bottles.

A bit subtle yet crisp and refreshing, the 2022 Huia Sauvignon Blanc excels with its green apple, lime and sweet smoke profile. I might not pick it out as New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc blind, but I also wouldn't pass up on a refill.

Ten years in and my last bottle--I wish I had another six-pack to follow this beauty's evaluation.

Mint leaf and pine give way to red currants and sweet smoke as the cool-toned 2020 Podere Prospero Bolgheri Rosso evolves in the glass. Soft yet focused, this possesses brilliant acidity and tart wild berry fruits that are expertly framed by hints of sour citrus as subtle grippy tannins emerge toward the close. It's structured yet fresh, tapering off with a savory herbal tinge as the cheeks pucker with youthful tension. It was very nice tonight but likely better in three to five years.

This is a bit muted on the nose yet very pretty with gooseberry, mint and sweet peas. A vivid burst of grapefruit juice splashes across the palate, tongue-curling lemon rind, and a hint of savory herbs, all nicely motivated by juicy acidity. This tapers off potent with intense citrus concentration, remarkably fresh, yet full of cheek-puckering tension. At this price, I'd certainly buy again, yet maybe a smaller glass is in order (tasted in Zalto Bordeaux)

A stoney mix of crushed rocks, chalk, and white smoke opens the stage for dried strawberries and minty herbs through its seductive bouquet. Rich yet pliant and juicy, this excels with its zesty acidity and fleshy wild berry fruits. A caking of minerality mingles with edgy tannins, the only sign of a warm year, as the 2017 finishes remarkably fresh yet potent and long with a bump of sour citrus that carries it home. What a gorgeous wine! Drinking beautifully now but with many years of positive development.

A great QPR, with a stereotypical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc nose of intense grapefruit, lemon rinds, wild herbs and wet stone. This balances richness with zesty acidity and sweet fruit in a way that seduces the senses. It finishes fresh and clean, puckering the cheeks with a citrusy concentration that lingers on. Frankly, I'm at least in for another six bottles at this price point. It's a crowd-pleaser.

Text-book New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, the 2022 Te Mata delivers pungent grapefruit and herbs without becoming candied or phenolic. Silky and energetic, with a salty mineral core and ripe citrus fruit to balance, this is a total pleasure on the palate. It leaves a cheek-puckering twang that keeps the taster looking back to the glass, finishing fresh, vibrant and cooling the senses. I wouldn't rush out for another bottle, but I would know that this would put a smile on the faces of just about everyone at a summer BBQ.

I didn't have as good of an experience as other tasters here, as my 2022 Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc came across as lacking energy and with an unsavory richness that left me with a feeling that the wine was disjointed. Typical Sauv Blanc aromatics yet lacking vibrancy. Ultimately, only half of the bottle was drunk, and the rest lingered in the fridge for days. I have another bottle that will hopefully redeem the Dog Point, but I'm hesitant to open it.

The 2022 Loveblock Sauvignon Blanc is delicate and refined, demanding a smaller bulbed glass, as I typically like larger glasses, but that takes away from the nuanced aromas here. Lemon zesty, kiwi and a spritz of grapefruit combine with hints of sweet spice. It's soft textured, with suggestions of liquid stone or slate giving way to sour melon. This leaves a citrusy concentration while leaving the palate perfectly reset for another sip. Well done, but look elsewhere if you want a big and spicy New Zealand Sauv Blanc.

Nuanced and delicate nose with ripe pit fruits and sweet florals. Opulent and rich on that palate with a great acid and saline balance. The 2020 tapers off with hints of vanilla bean and ripe nectarine. Very nice.

I loved this wine at half the current rate. Now. It's simply a solid-performing white Burgundy that has become far overpriced.

I was hoping for much more complexity, acidity and minerality. In the end, at the price point, this was a letdown. Sorry to say, but I'm thinking it's more of a vintage thing than producer.

The 2013 Fonte Canale has really come to life since my last experience with it in 2020. Today, this is smoky and mineral intense with crushed oyster shells, caraway and lemon oils contrasting young peach, mango and dusty florals. Its textures are soft, yet the impact is enormous, as stimulating acidity and tart orchard fruits assault the senses, evolving into an almost salt-and-white pepper savoriness. Perfectly refined and crisply refreshing, like liquid limestone. At ten years old, the 2013 still comes across as a teenager, with edgy elbows and knees, yet luminescent and wildly attractive. It's incredible that this was only her second commercial release of Fonte Canale. Magic juice, and with many years of evolution in store!!!

Sitting in a Zalto Bordeaux glass, with lots of air--the 2018 Reserve is simply stunning. It's delicate on the nose and makes you work hard, but once you do, Wow. Chamomile, crushed apples, mint leaf, wet stone, and sweet smoke seduce the senses. Stunning acidity, riveting minerality, and perfectly ripe stone fruits inform its juicy performance on the palate. the 2018 cleans up beautifully, crisp and refreshing, yet potent and almost chewy. What a presence!!! it's both sweetly satisfying yet full of energy and tension.

The 2006 resonates in the glass with a blend of tobacco, black cherries and spice. This is soft textured with textbook Roagna acidity and gripping minerality. It finishes medium in length with nuances of licorice and citrus that linger. More depth would be preferred, but just looking at this label is so much fun.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata was a highlight of my recent flight of 2018s, lifting from the glass with vivid black cherries complemented by autumnal spices and hints of shaved cedar. This is lifted and juicy in feel, with bright red berries and crisp acidity that adds energy throughout as rosy inner florals form toward the close. Nuances of licorice and balsam herbs linger through the long and lightly structured finale. This is a remarkably pretty expression of Rocche dell’Annunziata, which is refined for three years in large casks.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Unoperuno is dusty and floral in the glass, mixing dried strawberries with roses and sweet smoke. This flows across the palate like pure silk, cool-toned and incredibly fresh, with tart wild berry fruits and inner violet florals that cascade throughout. The 2018 finishes gracefully and hauntingly long with nuances of dried blueberry that linger on and on. The Unoperuno could use some cellaring to help its aromatics to blossom. Otherwise, it’s an incredibly charming wine. Unoperuno, a blend of Altare’s vineyards, translates to “one by one”; it’s a Barolo that is produced through hand sorting where each berry is destemmed by hand. What a beauty.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): Dark and moody in the glass, the 2018 Barolo Campe opens up with a blend of wild herbal tones and dried cherries. It’s softly textured, with masses of minerality up front contrasting a core of tarry blackberry and plum. This finishes with a hulking structure, a bit dried out and long, with grippy tannins that saturate as hints of black licorice slowly fade.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Aleste wafts up with a darkly alluring bouquet of crushed black currants offset by lifting hints of cedar and mint. It finishes grippy and full of tension with a reverberation of raspberry under an air of inner rose.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Brunate is hauntingly dark and floral, with spicy red and black fruits complemented by a hint of dried blood orange. This is silky-smooth and energetic, with vivid black cherry and exotic spice motivated by stimulating acidity. It finishes with incredible length, leaving a coating of fine-grained tannins, along with violet and rose tones that slowly fade. The 2018 Brunate is a beautiful expression of the vintage, which should drink well relatively young. Frankly, it’s hard to put the glass down.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): A delicate mix of roses, earth tones and wild strawberries wafts up as the 2018 Barolo Brunate opens in the glass. This is pure class, finessed with cooling minerality and crisp red berry fruit. It finishes with a coating of grippy tannins, leaving a completely classic feel, as hints of licorice and hard red candies slowly fade. The 2018 is incredibly pretty, yet it will require time to come fully into focus. The Brunate of Oddero hails from one of the higher elevations of the vineyard, planted in soil rich in blue clay and stones. I'm so happy to see so much positive change from this estate over the last five to seven years.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Gramolere is unexpectedly rich and fruit-focused on the nose, with crushed black cherries, shavings of cedar and dried roses forming its bouquet. It’s soft-textured and pure in style with mineral-tinged red fruits and savory spice. The 2018 tapers off wonderfully fresh with an almost-mentholated sensation, as grippy tannins are nicely balanced by a twang of residual acidity. This may not possess the usual power of Gramolere, but instead impresses with its graceful character and balance. Well done.

Nuances of licorice and a hint of dark chocolate linger, as this finishes with youthfully grippy Villero tannins and a bit dry. I'd prefer more balance from start to finish.

This is soft, round and savory in style, with mineral-tinged red and black fruits that cascade across a core of brisk acidity. It finishes with a hulking structure, leaving just nuances of black currant to linger. Unfortunately, I don’t see the fruit keeping pace with the tannins over time.

It flows across the palate, silky yet savory, with herbal-tinged red berries motivated by brisk acidity. This tapers off with nuances of lavender and violets, as fine tannins gently tug as the senses. The 2018 is a remarkably pretty expression of Monvigliero fruit. It hails from a single-hectare parcel that was planted in 1968. Elisa Scavino did a fantastic job here.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is a total charmer, wild and exuberant in the glass with a burst of exotic florals, fresh picked strawberries and sweet spice. It washes across the palate with silken textures and tart wild berry fruits energized by zesty acidity. The 2018 finishes structured yet long with a primary concentration that lingers, as nuances of licorice and red currants fade. This comes across as quite youthful today, yet with the balance to mature beautifully in the cellar. It’s a completely atypical expression of the vintage, as well as one of its most impressive wines.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Mosconi is wild and dramatic, blending an intense mix of dusty cherry, spiced blood orange and shavings of cedar. It’s round and pliant, yet full of energy, with vibrant acidity energizing its tart wild berry fruits as a hint of pine resonates toward the close. It leaves a staining of primary concentration, along with a coating of fine tannins that gently tug at the palate. The 2018 needs more time to integrate, yet it possesses a beautiful balance that will reward cellaring. Of note, during my recent tastings, this was the bottle that invoked the most positive feedback from fellow tasters, which was mostly focused on how pleasantly unique it was.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): Benevelli is a new name for me and a very pleasant surprise, as the 2018 Barolo Mosconi lifts from the glass with a pretty bouquet of bright cherries and strawberries complemented by dusty roses. This is soft-textured with a pure and savory mix of red fruits underscored by saline minerality. It finishes with fine tannins balanced by crisp acidity, as a tart wild berry concentration lingers. The 2018 is a beautiful expression of Mosconi fruit that comes across as completely classic, even from this difficult vintage.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Cerequio has come a long way since I last tasted it; dusty and floral in the glass, with a lovely blend of violet and lavender accentuating crushed black cherries. This hovers across the palate, seeming weightless at times yet impactful, with masses of tart red fruits and exotic spices that saturate. Fresh acidity maintains balance, as fine tannins grip the palate and leave inner rose and a primary staining of concentration to linger long. This is so powerful, yet also beautifully balanced.

The 2019 Barbera d’Asti La Crena is dark and intense, with black raspberry preserves giving way to exotic brown spices and sage. This is rich and silky with saturating dark red berries and inner spice cooled by hints of mint. There's a note of brown sugar, yet not sweet, instead this comes across as almost salty and savory. The 2019 boasts an amazing depth of tarry fruit, balsam herbs, tobacco and all lasting incredibly long but lightened by a twang of sour citrus. This is a beast.

When I tasted the 2020 in January, it was youthfully dense and rich, but today has really come into its own. This is seductive in the glass enticing with a whiff of confectionary spice and sweet melon that gives way to lemon oil and peaches. It's round and opulent in feel, with juicy acidity to contrast as a soothing wave of ripe orchard fruits flood the palate. The 2020 finishes remarkably fresh and more potent than I recalled, leaving minerals and sweet mint to linger. I may have slightly underrated this beauty.

The last time I tasted the Rosso dott. Palazzolo from Ronco del Gnemiz, it demanded more time in the cellar, but tonight, it's just starting blossom with more complexities than imagined. Dried citrus peels, crushed rocks, and floral undergrowth give way to plum sauce, wild blueberries, and sweet sage as 2018 Dott. Palazzolo Rosso slowly comes to life. This is deeply textural, almost creamy, and savory, with a sapidity that saturates, mixing tart wild berries and exotic spices that give way to nuances of cocoa. Inner violets, black currants, and hints of licorice linger impossibly long through the finish, along with adolescent tannins that are just starting to soften. The Dott. Palazzolo Rosso is a blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, all from estate vineyards.

The 2019 Brenntal Merlot Riserva is rich and savory, with a woodsy mix of black raspberries, shavings of cedar, sage, and a dusting of cocoa. This floods the palate with silky textures and ripe wild berry fruit underscored by saline minerals as sweet tannins add a tactile sensation toward the close. The 2019 finishes with medium length and lightly structured leaving inner rose and a salty flourish to linger. Enjoyable today but with medium-term cellaring potential as well

The 2019 Sylvaner R is deeper and richer than the 2020 beside it, with nuances of vanilla bean and dusty white flowers blossoming into crushed pears and hints of sweet spice. This impresses with the silkiest of textures that are cut by a laser-like core of bright acids and penetrating citrus tones. It all results in a long and stimulating finale with a salty flourish that goes on and on, further complemented by hints of candied lime that linger.

It is amazing to me how the 1974 vintage continues to over-deliver and mature at such a glacial pace. Ten years ago I wouldn't have imagined that there would still be so much pleasure to be found in these wines, and yet, year after year, they are some of the most memorable experiences. The 1974 Giacomo Brezza Barolo opens very slowly, yet in a constant state of evolution, as its first sip brings about nuances of incense, dried flowers and tobacco, met by brisk acidity and tart red berries offset by a lasting note of spiced citrus rinds. It's only after an hour that this begins to show its real charms, as it gains in weight and volume on the palate, along with adding an inner sweetness that only maturity can bring. Notes of worn leather, cedar box and underbrush evolve with more time, yet through it all there's an energy and refreshing quality to the '74 that never fades. As expected, the last glass was the best glass--enjoyed a full eight hours after pulling the cork. What a beauty.

All of the bacon fat, animal musk and scorched earth goodness that you could ever possibly desire is embodied in the bouquet of the 2015 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph. It's wiry and intense with brisk acidity, minerals and citrus-tinged blackberries that create a wildly energetic yet impactful impression on the palate. Silty tannins saturate, as the 2015 tapers off remarkably long and potent, leaving hints of salted licorice and spiced citrus rinds to linger. It's a Northern Rhone thang! This is magic tonight. Gonon always over-delivers, even at this young stage. The 2015 would be verging on "desert island wine" if not for the recent explosion in price.

Peppery, floral, minty and fresh, we're stopping short of Ricola, this explodes from the glass. However, on the palate, it's rich, and deeply fruity (blackberries galore) offset by wild herbs and balsamic spice. there's a hint of tannin ( Perfect for that cut of fatty meat) yet also a buzz of residual acids to balance. Everyone left the table happy!

the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from @domainedelajanasse resonates with dried cherries, plums, kirsch, sweet smoke, wild herbs and exotic spice from start to finish. While enveloping and potent, there's a core of vibrant acidity that makes this especially juicy in character, while leaving a subtle coating of minerals and tannin that grounds the experience in reality. What's more, it's easily one of the best values in the region for "entry-level" CdP!

2013 Arnaut Boushey Vineyard Syrah from @avenniawinery - Fermented with native yeasts and 15% whole cluster, plus only 15% new oak, means that the 2013 is a near transparent interpretation of variety and Yakima Valley terroir. It's dark to the core yet vividly fruity in nature with a burst of crushed blackberry complemented by violet pastille and cocoa. This smooths over the palate with soothingly silky textures and ultra-ripe black fruits that are expertly balanced by juicy acidity. Licorice and dark chocolate are lifted by nuances of grilled sage as the 2013 finishes with a gentle tug of residual tannin that keeps this heady experience ground to earth.

2017 Maculan Fratta Breganze Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
The 2017 Fratta lifts up with a dark and alluring display of black currants, sweet herbs, rich notes of mocha and savory brown spice. This is cool-toned and spicy, yet with a polished feel, showing tart blackberries offset by hints of sour citrus and toasty oak, as violet-tinged florals form toward the close. Fine tannins make themselves known throughout the finale, as this tapers off lightly structured, with hints of licorice lingering long. The Fratta is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot, refined for one year in French barriques.

The 2018 is seductively balsamic in the glass, mixing black currants and grilled herbs with hints of mocha and flowery underbrush. This is racy and lean yet well-muscled, with vibrant black fruits and exotic spice accentuated by a core of zesty acidity that adds a youthful approachability. The 2018 finishes on a savory note with hints of black olive and a complex web of mineral-laced fine tannins that add a classic feel without getting in the way of its energetic personality. Drink this dark stallion now, with a decant, or over the next decade.

the Petit Manseng dominated 2020 Domaine Castera Jurançon Sec, this is exactly what I craved, with a unique bouquet of dried lemon rinds, crisp opal apples, ginger and raw almond that immediately captures my attention. This travels across the palate like a bullet wrapped in crushed velvet, almost weighty, yet excited by stimulating acidity with rich orchard fruits offset by spiced citrus and minerals. There's a grippy, tactile, lip smacking sensation that lingers on and on throughout the mouthwatering finale that calls me back to the glass for more. Please pour me another!

Almond paste, candied lemon and ginger mixes with vanilla custards, baked apples and sweet smoke as the deeply alluring 2019 Falanghina Flora comes to life in the glass. Its textures are almost glycerol in feel, yet guided by brilliant acidity, as ripe peaches mix with hints of candied lemon under pretty inner florals. This becomes almost salty through the finale, displaying admirable structure and a pleasant inner sweetness that mingles with minerals and ripe green melon. The Flora tricks you into expecting an opulent expression on the palate but then over-delivers with tension and character. This is Rockstar juice.
