  • Has developed very nicely. Nose has a "twiggy" element and bright raspberry notes. Palate of richer darker fruits. Drink now or next 3 years.

  • Time seems to have been kind to this bottling, which is drinking quite well now. Good zin w/ bright fruit

  • I guess this is a controversial wine….flawed with VA, of which BWC offered to refund bottles. 3 barrels made, from young vines……I don't have a problem at all with this bottle. I popped and poured out a little…then put the cork back in and did the Mollydooker/Saxum shake! Fizzed up a little, but not as bad as I've seen from 04 Saxum! The fruit is bright and tart…raspberry,cherry,olallieberry,blackberry…..little sourskin(young vines)…but has a good balance of bramble, dryness, and sweet. Slight heat at first…maybe more acidity…which alivens the senses…but plenty of balance with dry cocoa powder, briar patch, kirsch liqueur, licorice, white pepper, peppermint patty. This is a laser beam Zin…fresh and bright, with plenty of Zin tastiness! Can even go longer imo.

  • Interesting experiment with this wine. Opened at party with no background on the "refund". A couple folks dumped it, but a couple folks professed to liking it. Myself, I found it to be a bit stewed and pruney, but had some nice elements as well. Not sure if more time will serve this well or not. Appreciative of the refund, but not so bad as to have been necessary IMO.

  • I always wonder if it's just time we need.

I brought this to a party where there was no risk if the bottle was bad. However, I was pleased with this little zinfandel and didn't have any of the issues mentioned in others' notes. It was a balanced, fruity zin that was actually pretty light on the palate. No overly prune-y notes and no noticeable alcohol. Not going to win any awards, but other people liked it as well.

Chilled in fridge prior to consumption for an hour, left outside for 30 minutes before it was popped and poured.

If I just got lucky, well, then, that's great. Otherwise, everyone else, consider trying one to see if things haven't improved.

  • I was going to wait a couple years on this last bottle, but I forgot about that when I pop and pour this. No carbonation mouthfeel for this bottle. Still had that dusty gravel and prunes nose and taste. It was good, but nothing special. I think it will be better a couple years from now.

  • I tried this over 2 days every couple of hours and wanted so badly to have it come around. It never did. It just went from nasty vinegary to more of a super over extracted fruit explosion. I don't feel bad since my money was refunded.

  • Nose and palate are gravel and prunes. Grapey with a slight carbonation mouthfeel to it. There are other wines I prefer from Bedrock, but I think I'm going to see what my last bottle of this does in 2-3 years.

  • Big and jammy. Like fruit preserves. Nice but not my favorite zin from Morgan. I like the field
    blends better.

  • Bottle from a year ago showed overripe, stewed and pruney and was dumped. This bottle was opened with no expectations other than to braise some lamb shanks. Lo and behold it is completley different -- an easy drinking, ripe yet balanced zin with no flaws. Either there is dramatic bottle variation or a year of age did wonders. In any event, kudos to Morgan for acknowledging the problem and issuing refunds -- though this bottle does not warrant it. Perhaps a victim of a too early release.

  • Nose remains unappealing and pruney, but the palate is smoother and showing a little spice. Served at 60 degrees or so which I suspect helped. Got through a glass but the rest is likely headed to the drain.

  • If you like smelling nail polish remover, open this and smell for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, it fades to a sour bing cherry note. On the palate, it was some stewed fruit and sour cherry. It's not what I'm used to out of Bedrock and may still have some sulfur issues, but I've had worse wines that I wouldn't have called flawed. If I didn't mark this flawed, I'd score it as an average wine, so 78.

  • One sip then just used the rest to cook with. Had one bottle that was not that bad, but this was not drinkable at all.

  • Nose initially had an airplane glue element which blew off fairly quickly. Texture is slightly unctuous with a round fullness. Palate offers rich and robust brambly fruits. A little hollow on the midpalate and just slightly short on the finish. But I found this to be generally enjoyable and did not have the issues that many have found. I've certainly had plenty of other zins that come across as more extracted with stronger stewed fruit and apparent alcohol.

  • So I decided to let my wife score this one. I had previous experience with the earlier bottles and I did not want that to taint the tasting. So here you go per Cheryl:deep purple color with pink highlights. Nose: dominant alcohol. Taste: cherries and tobacco. final score: 87

Day 3 update from me. Dramatically better. The prunes from the early bottles are almost gone. Nice spice, raisins, the alcohol is tamer. Really deep, big fruit, concentrated. Maybe a little longer cellar time will mellow this one out.

  • 15.4% ABV. Slightly translucent dark garnet in the glass. Spicy zinberry and raisin nose with a much more subtle and less obvious note of CO2 which leads me to think this bottle may be okay. Medium full bodied with tangy sweet zin fruit on the palate with some echoing spices from the nose. I will retaste the leftovers day 2 and get a better sense of this, but aside from some prickly acidity on the palate, this bottle is much better than any previous and not really obviously flawed in my opinion.

  • Stewed prunes are still there in the nose and the taste. Real strong flavors, some good, some "interesting". Still flawed.
An exception for Bedrock's ususal high quality.

  • Opened poured out a glass then drank the rest over 2 days.
I feel this wine has taken to much bad press. The first glass did have some prune notes, but I felt as I finished the bottle over the following 2 days it got better. To me that was what I was looking for by opening a bottle this early.
Morgan is a standup guy for what he has done for those who purchased this wine and other things he does for the people who purchase his wines.

  • Pop and pour and shared with a few friends. Everyone thought it was odd; a bit like a mix of fruit juice and vodka. It was not horrible; just odd and not enjoyable.

  • Excess CO2 big time. After some shaking and waiting a viable Zin emerged, but probably just a shadow of its potential.

  • After reading the notes on this young wine I wanted to open one of my bottles to see what all the fuss what about. Nose is certainly different than most zins, and I do get some of that raisin/prune others have mentioned. There is a LOT of fruit on the palate and the compote reference someone provided might be fitting. There is heavy acidity and very little tannin. The finish is very short, but you would expect that from such a young wine. Is this ever going to be a 90 pointer? No. However I have enjoyed so many of Bedrock's offerings to date I would not view this as typical of the portfolio.

  • I'll be a bit of a contrarian on this one...not to say that I thought the wine was fantastic, but rather that it needs time to be judged accurately. Everything about this is painfully young and backwards, with super-tight flavors, sharp acidity, and some coarseness to the tannins and overall mouthfeel. in short, it strikes me as tasting like a backwards barrel sample. There are certainly some of those flavors people mentioned; I liken it to more of a fruit compote sort of thing. Nonetheless, while I don't expect revelatory greatness, I do think it needs time to be judged fairly.

  • Unfortunately, more of the same with this bottle. Stewed, pruny, with heat. Some Zin character showing through, but really not very good.

  • Yow. I'm not sure this wine deserves the scathing remarks below. This is not Bedrock's best effort, but still is a middle of the road zin with some redeming qualities. Lots of fruitcake and stewed fruit on the nose, but also some notes of cumin, pomegranate, creme brûlée, and pine resin. Palate better balance than the nose suggests and demonstrates good structure and acidity, but this really isn't built for the long haul given how the fruit is out of the chute.

  • There is not much redeeming about this wine. I just can't get past the horrid smell of stewed prunes and raisins with some over ripe fruit funk. The taste is just as underwhelming as the nose with taste of over ripe fruit and alcohol. Totally disappointing. There is no way a winery should release a wine this bad.

  • Previous note and score withdrawn. The producer, Morgan Twain-Peterson, has withdrawn the wine from the marketplace as it doesn't meet his standards for quality. He not only makes great wine, he's a stand-up guy.

  • Gifted a bottle of this...day two or three there was a certain foodie appeal to such a distinct bottle of wine, with this overwhelming prune or mission fig composition that everyone is speaking of. I tend to see the wine glass half full. That being said, this wine is really very unappealing. The poor bastard who had gifted this to me has two more sitting in the cellar, just taking up space!

  • Agree with prior reviews. Pretty horrible. Fizzy.

  • Has found some redeeming qualities on the palate on day 3, but the nose is just unappealing and had it been drunk in 2010 it would have been one of the worst wines of the year. Every other Bedrock wine I've tried has been good to great. Oh well. This one is like prunes, fruitcake and a tablespoon of brown sugar were marinated in Grand Marnier and then set on fire.

  • Not my cup of tea - far too pruney. Won't rate this, but disappointing, especially given how nice I thought the Syrah was.

  • Deep garnet color, stewed smell on the nose, concentrated berries, but off tasting. Not up to par with Bedrock's other offerings.

  • Drank over two days. Agree with the others on this wine -- it is overripe and pruney. Really a bit medicinal tasting. Acidity is out of whack and the alcohol is noticeable on the nose and palate. It reminded my wife of fruit juice. Not very enjoyable. I think this is the clunker in the Bedrock lineup.

  • Too young. Unbalanced and not showing well. Ripe/stewed/pruney. Hopefully will integrate with time. Other wines from this producer have shown much better.

  • Flawed bottle? This was quite stewed/pruney, and the aroma/taste didn't go away after 3 days. I hope the remaining bottles are better.
