Decanted for an hour or so. Consumed over two nights. Technically fine but boring. Mostly plum/prune, earth and caramel on the back end. Tannin still there and right amount of acid. Needs food. I see no reason to hold. Altogether a ho-hum experience.

This brute has turned into an elegant, transparent beauty. Crystal clear acidity and notable but integrated tannins. Taste of cherries, mushroom, and a flowery component I won't try to specify. Had it with venison, oohs and aahs around the table. Quite a bit of sediment. Long life left, no hill in sight.

This is ok, but I don’t love it. This has softened some. No sign of any tertiary notes. It has dark tones and a sweet/tart like character. Just not very interesting.
I liked this more the second night, which is rare for me. It lost the sweet/ripe character and I was more in line with what I would expect.

Third bottle from a case purchased on release. Evolving on course with softening tannins while benefiting from good balance between fruit and acid. Nice lift. Interesting secondary characteristrics of violets, black raspberry and chocolate. Broad shouldered and supple. The alcohol may be atouch high for my palate but otherwise a very good Brunello maturing with grace.

Very different bottle from the one that I had four or five years ago. This was very savory and just screaming for food. Big tomato leaf notes right from the outset, with big doses of balsamic, then dried cherries, figs, bits of orange zest, cloves and baking spice. The tannins are very well integrated, although they can be just a touch grainy towards the finish. Med+ acid keeps it bright and adds a bit of structure. Med++ on the finish. This good on its own, but truly came alive and kicked in an extra gear when paired with tomato, pesto and burrata. Probably at or near peak, with several years left in reserve.
Popped'n poured at L'Ardente in DC - this bottle of '06 Brunello came home with us direct from Uccelliera after an amazing visit and tasting. While not quite up to the level of the '10, it paired wonderfully with the food and brought forth lovely memories of a wonderful trip.

At 15 years of age felt like trying this to pair with homemade lasagna. Well we drank and finished this with appetizers before the lasagna because the crowd was “thirsty”. There was a streak of acidity in this wine that was noticeable after I opened the 2012 version (for the lasagna).

Dry, earthy, some funk, lots of dirt and some mushroom. Not the classic smooth refinement of a typical brunello, but very much liked the earthiness. A bit heavy for a sangiovese to me, but enjoyable.

Dirt and tar, not much fruit, some mushroomy funk on the pallate, not as smooth and delicate as some brunellos, but very meaty and earthy which I like. A nice aged brunello.

My final try of Ucceliera in a very good vintage. Just like with the 07 Annata and a recent 04 Riserva, the lower altitude and Southern cluster location of Ucceliera's vine yards does not show well for my taste. On the nose the first impression is of tar and some very dark fruits, followed my medicinal and borderline oxidative notes on the palate that carry into the finish. Fairly coarse medium tannins. Will avoid Ucceliera just like neighbour Ciacci in warmer Brunello vintages going forward, as they lack the refinement I seek in Sangiovese. Having said that I did however enjoy their cooler vintage 2013.

Yummy brunello. If I remember to check this note before I drink the next one I will try to not drink my last bottle before 2025. This has a lot in it, and while it's great now it could use more time!

Slow oxed for 12 hrs then into a decanter for another hour. No sign of aging at all. The nose is still comprised of primary fruit. Red black mixed with some bitter cranberries Nice. As it sat over the meal it unfolded into one fine wine that’s just entering its first phase of drinking. It gained power and sweetness. Got better and better and we were all sad it was gone.
Great wine. Dark, inky and concentrated. Definately in The Modern Corner of the Brunello-ring. Wonderful tannines, lovely acidic core to keep it palatable, versatile and interesting. To drink now and in the next 5 years.

This was quite lovely on pop-and-pour, with a classic mix of red fruit, leather, and faint spices. No rusticity here, though, which is to my liking. Two hours after opening and the fruit is just starting to fade. That, along with the relatively advanced garnet color, tell me this is one to drink in the near future vs. hold for much more cellaring.

Abby's Birthday BYO: Solid, but way too young. The nose showed a tight, subtle bouquet of cassis and other dark berries, ferrous accents, and little notes of herbs and spice. Rich, ripe and powerful on the palate, this unwound in tones of sweet cassis and blueberries, spice and steely minerality, all still really primary. There is plenty of potential here though - it had good depth, a nice fresh balance, and a fine structure. All promising a long fruitful aging curve ahead. I would not touch it for another decade of so though.

PNP, beautiful wine. Dark, rich color, almost inky. Nose had red berry, eucalyptus, leather and spice, with a floral component. Palate showed beautiful composition and great balance with a solid tannic structure and a long finish. Glad I have another case of these!

9th bottle of the case, of which 6 have been flawed (oxidised), a shockingly high percentage. But when this is good, it's very good. Beautiful flavor, great nose - just makes those flawed bottles more head-scratching.

Overbearing tannin on the pnp, softened with an hour or so of air. Big wine. Straight up dark fruit, blackberry, plumb, rust. Just a touck of eucalyptus. Years left, but may have seen too much oak.

Another off bottle. I don't think this case was heat damage, but most of the bottles have had a strong oxidative smell and taste, which is a horrible shame, since this is typically such a great Brunello.

Bought on release and stored at 55 degrees. Served two bottles at a family gathering. Not bad but not up to standards for Brunello. My wife and I got engaged in Brunello region and love good Brunello, which also means we have high expectations. As mentioned before it is more modern than traditional - why mess with tradition that is so good? Opened and slow oxed for about 30 minutes. Bottle #2 was richer and a bit more smooth than bottle #1. Bottle #1 felt more like Chianti and was clearly on a downslope. My wife even asked if something was wrong with it. It was not flawed just deviod of tuscan character. While this wine had a nice price, the quality is not strong enough for a good QPR. I will probably avoid this producer in the future.

Wow. Two "off" bottles in a row, and now 3 of the first 4 from the case. Same issue - not corked or cooked, but a definite oxidative note. Decanting helps some with the nose, but the off taste persists.

Another perplexing bottle from what is typically a favorite Brunello producer. This definitely had a strong oxidized note on the nose. Decanting seemed to lessen that, and toward the end of dinner, this was becoming pleasurable. But even then, it never came close to approaching the heights I would expect from this wine and vintage.

Double decanted a couple of hours before dinner, and consumed with a variety of quite delicious heavy Southern Italian fare at Latin King DSM, for this taster the wine was close to as good as brunello gets.
Mostly dark cherry on the nose, with notable "meatiness" in the mouth and a relatively long finish, what is most distinctive here is a very silky mouthfeel that announces brunello rather than mere sangiovese. Though it lacks typical Tuscan herbal qualities, there is no sense of "spoofiness" here. (I don't taste merlot in the blend.)
The wine is currently in a great spot in its evolution, though I suspect it also still has a long way to go.

Deep, dark garnet in color with ever so slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of floral notes of violets & earthy/dusty notes, dried herbs of anise, spice notes of sandalwood, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with earthy, spices, dried herbs, mushrooms & minerals. Lingering finish. Drinks well at present with decanting and extended airing but even at 12 years of age, it will continue to develop and benefit from additional aging as well.

Second bottle of the case, and this bottle was not good. I don't think it was corked, but definitely oxidized, with sherry on the nose. Quite disappointing, as I really like this producer, and the first bottle of the '06 was outstanding.

After finishing off the last of my '04s, this was the first bottle from a case of the Uccelliera Brunello. If the rest of the case is this good, I'll be a very happy boy. The nose was amazing and the taste just as good. I'm hoping this case with tide me over until I start popping a few of the 2010.
As an aside, seeing the John Gilman score for this wine is more evidence that our palates are about 180° in opposition, particularly in Bordeaux and Brunello.

Decanted 45 minutes. Quick notes during dinner. Quite modern and extracted in style, but it shows the restraint to not get overblown or fade into some sort of "internationally styled" anonymity. The oak is there, but it works well with the general intensity of the fruit. This initially hits you with a burst of tart cherries but quickly transitions to the more bass notes, with a herbal and licorice-like, slightly tannic finish. This was great with a little bit of air, but it has the stuffing to go another 10 years.

Lighter bodied and less full of chacter than the Pian dell’Orino we had side-by-side and it may not have as long of a drinking window. The palate did not quite live up to the promise of the beautiful nose. However, enjoyed by all.

A big wine indeed. On the young side but getting ready for business. Dark fruit, pronounced oak impact. Well made wine but I have to admit that a bit more restraint would have suited my palate.
Slo ox for 5 hours and drank over the next 5. That may not have been enough air. Black fruit, with a touch of red on the back end. Coffee, mineral, firm tannin. Try again in 2020

Black fruit nose with a well done placement of juniper wood, fairly fragrant. Entry is tasty with relatively light weight but builds quite strongly to an enormous peppery finish. Clean but drying tannins. Well placed acidity and wood and a lot of pepper. This can be extended to 2030. Responds well to a long decant and retains the powerful finish but with the edges rubbed off.

2006 Brunellos (Vinci): Nose is full with layers -- rich, black cherry, nice toasty spice and toasted herb. The palate is smooth and herby. Fades a bit in the mid-palate, but picks up spice in the finish. Nice grip and balance.

Opened at 3pm and slow ox'd until serving at 7pm and this still had some firm tannins. Brickish red rim as is typical of Brunello and classic earth and mushroom nose. One of my favorite producers and paired well with eggplant and chicken parm cooked by my best friend and his darling wife. We had a few "starter" bottles so I still have about 1/3 of this left and will taste tomorrow and see if it softens.

Tuscany 2006 Ten years after. (@ SvdV): Second time blind this month; lucky me ;-)! Compared to my previous TN this bottle was slightly different with more development on it. See also my note from 4/4/2016. Tonight in the bouquet also ripe dark fruits, but also some lovage and celery as well as rustic flavors. On the palate a lot of herbs and spices, dark berries and cherries, coffee, mushrooms, oak, firm acidity and soft tannin with still a good bite. I scored the wine 92 – 93.

Weekly tasting group #208; Old world 2006; an overview. (@ VD): Beautiful and luxurious bouquet with dark forest fruits, cedar, sweet spices and some floral notes. On the palate a slightly sweet start of ripe dark forest fruits, graphite, salty licorice, chocolate and laurel. Firm acidity tannin and bitterness. In this stage the wine is starting to show its merits, but it needs another 5+ years in the bottle to show more finesse. This is a firm wine with a good length! For my own reference; it reminded me of a good Clerc Milon – Pauillac. 93+

Decanted for just over an hour before tasting. Medium garnet colour. Exhibits an enchanting nose with hints of black cherries, cherry liqueur, exotic spices, autumn underbrush and cedar-wood. On the palate the wine comes across as rich and highly concentrated, with lots of refreshing acidity and quite fierce tannins. Enjoyable even today, but this is certainly a big Brunello with enough stuffing to evolve favourably well into the next decade (93-95 points).

Served with another BdM (Canalicchio did Sopra) and a Rosso (Uccelliera) with a simple family Italian meal. All three wines were appreciated. This was the WOTN and clearly the most elegant of the three. Silky seamless mouthfeel, excellent depth of flavors with red fruit, forest floor elements and firm tannins with excellent length. 45 min decant.

WWS Price/Preference Smackdown (blind tasting) (White Plains, NY): Drank blind at WWS tasting alongside a 2011 Felsina. Nose of dark berries & some wood. Quite a bit on the tannic side. Dark cherry fruit, pleasant mouthfeel, good length & complexity. Some forest elements here but hard to get through the very grippy tannins at this stage. Needs time to develop, and definitely decant.

Coravin taste-off: 2010 Brunellos: This was remarkably similar to the 2010 Uccelliera. The nose and flavor profiles are almost identical. This one is just a bit smoother than the 2010, making it a bit more seamless. But the differences are small and I think the 2010 will be very similar in a few years. Again, very nice balance with a nice long and pleasant finish. Very drinkable now, but lots of life ahead. Very very nice.

I've been noted as saying that Brunello has no soul, meanining it doesn't have a signature to tell you where it is from. Pulled two glasses out tonight with my Coravin, therefore, no decanting. After 10 minutes in the glass, I fell in love with the nose. If I had tasted it blind, I would have picked it for a right bank St. Emilion, hence the "no soul". However, this wine had an incredible nose of mineral, licorice, menthol, crushed rocks, and flowers. The only thing telling me where it was from was the finish... Couldn't miss the tannin from a young Italian wine. While the nose says it is fully mature, the tannins say "give me more time". A superb wine, which deserves an outstanding rating.
Wet dog, iron, earth and fresh crisp cranberries on the nose. In the mouth, a wonderful richness. Well integrated and drinking at its peak right now. Very good Brunello!

Phenomenal wine and best of nearly a dozen '06 vintage brunellos I have had. Great nose of dark raspberries, cola, iron. Palate is in perfect balance, with juicy deep red fruit, orange peel, musky earth. A bit dusty on palate, but a deep elongated sappy finish. Had elements of a Pommard burgundy. Intriguing and will only get better with time. 94+.

An absolutely amazing wine, initially the tannins were noticeable, with decanting for 30 minutes, the tannins were less noticeable and the wine became smooth and silky. Classic Brunello. A fabulous Brunello that checked all the boxes. Good tannic foundation without being overdone, and nicely balanced oak with dark fruit on top. Needed some time open, although did not decant. Drinking pretty well now, but no rush... Candidly, may not quite justify the price tag, but an excellent wine nonetheless.

The Big Sendoff; 9/15/2012-9/16/2012 (The Home of Dave L): Served double blind in a decanter and was told it was a Brunello, which I thought was a joke. Very dark in the glass, almost black. Even after a couple hour decant, this was very closed. I was trying to pin this down as a new world cab but eventually got a little clear red fruit mixed with a strongly toasted nose. Palate showed cassis and licorice, bright and acidic, with very prominent but polished tannins. Moderate length, adding some coffee to the core of red fruits. Modern and highly extracted, with a high quality structure. Forget about this wine for at least 5yrs but probably need 10+.

Opened, decanted, and poured. Paired extremely well with grilled ribeyes. Nice right out of the bottle, but just got better and better as time went by - 2.5 hours later, really opened to a fantastic bottle of wine. Beautifully balanced, with no heat for being at 15%. Long, long finish, that left me wanting more. Received this as a gift - I will look to buy more. Best Brunello I've had in a while.
opened at 11am, slow ox'd and then decanted around 5pm and drank from 7pm -10pm. On nose, tart cherry / black cherry / menthol / nail polish & leather. Beautiful. On palate, sour cherry, black cherry, orange peel primarily. Gained weight with air time - medium to full body but high acidity balances the fruite and not out of balance. Excellent with grilled NY strips. Loved this and as did the wife. 93-95 range. Will buy more. Needs lots of air if drinking now.

Medium rose red color. Good nose of dark grape jam and wood. Savory flavorful entry even throughout the mouth. Big extract, big finish with tannins well in check. This is a huge Sangiovese with a lot going on. Good example of modern extract with complexity. Acidity on the low side for a Brunello but well balanced. This needs a lot to cover 15% alcohol but it does it with style. Day 2 this really mellowed, perhaps melted is a better word, with just a touch of heat coming through at the back end.

Phenomenal, powerful. Deep dark cherry fruit, molten rock, asphalt, cedar, and floral notes on the nose. Palate is a continuous wall of power, albeit well balanced. Popped and poured the day I got it. Probably should have let it sit a few weeks but couldn’t keep hands off. Initially closed, not huge fruit, but could taste the structure. Wow! This is stunning Brunello. Night and day compared to the Ciacci Piccolomini just before it. Deeper ruby/garnet - young looking. Spicy cherry with some licorice and leather on the nose. This explodes with flavor in the mouth - classic Brunello flavors, cherry with tobacco and other flavors which add complexity. It manages to be both clean and fresh and complex at the same time. Tannins are there but well integrated. Great balance. Very alive. Yum.

Deep, fresh, black blood. Nose dense, primary, and loaded with earth. Similar to a young Beaucastel of an earlier era in soily-ness, think Mourvedre, but without the Grenache strawberry; profoundly earthy. Leather, licorice, bricklayers' dust, iron (blood), a little tarragon, a little thyme. Wickedly earthy, like an immoral teacher. Palate is velvet fruit and tannin, very primary and dry. More licorice -- much more licorice -- and dense plum and cherry fruit; tang of acid. Length is good but without nuance, of course. Somewhat like an '80s Bordeaux: conservative, stern, earthy, wearing a suit to court. Impressive, but too young for me, now. Really, I could use some easy charm, eh? Try in 5+ yrs.

Decanted and poured, this proved to be a worthy follow up to the outstanding 2004. The aromatics offer a wonderful mix of black cherry, tar, spice, cigar ash and chocolate. The color is a dark ruby to almost black that is youthful and vibrant. The medium/full bodied palate shows texture, depth and balance with medium grained tannins on the finish. This impresses for its brash youthfulness. This will benefit from additional bottle age.

The Italian Wine Masters (Hilton, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York): The nose on the 2006 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino was fragrant with dark fruits, lush flowers and undergrowth. On the palate, I found a structured, full-bodied wine with ripe red fruits and spicy wood. The structure continued into the finish and left the palate wrapped in tannin. This should be an interesting wine to follow over many years.

Another perplexing bottle from what is typically a favorite Brunello producer. This definitely had a strong oxidized note on the nose.

This one is just a bit smoother than the 2010, making it a bit more seamless. But the differences are small and I think the 2010 will be very similar in a few years.

Fantastic mouthful with great structure. But drinking next to some 25 yr old Italians made me realize how young this wine is, and why I should try and be patient with some of these.

An absolutely amazing wine, initially the tannins were noticeable, with decanting for 30 minutes, the tannins were less noticeable and the wine became smooth and silky. Classic Brunello.
Color: clear, transparent, medium ruby core, orange and watery rim;
Nose: Healthy, medium aroma, cherries and spice;
Taste: mesium tannins, full body, high acid, tart.
Great Brunello!

Wine stopped dinner for comments on how terrific it was. Decanted 30 mins which brought out unique flavors, exceptional balance of fruit, mouth feel, structure , linger.

Opened at Marche Bacchus in Las Vegas. Earthy cranberry, blood oranges, black cherries, and a touch of tar. Juicy on the palate with a bright minerally acidity. Really too young to show its stuff, of course, but certainly drinkable at this early stage.

At a trade tasting, so brief note but this struck me as being a very well made brunello at a decent QPR. Cherries, with a long finish with minerals and earth.

This was a fantastic bottle. Drank well from first open, but improved with decanting over dinner. Berries and sourness and hint of chocolate with brunello chalkiness. Everyone raved. Seems to have many years ahed of it.

Had it for new year. Drinks well. Stinky upon opening, improved well after time. No decanting. Great stuff but cannot compete against the 2004.

Phenomenal, powerful. Deep dark cherry fruit, molten rock, asphalt, cedar, and floral notes on the nose. Palate is a continuous wall of power, albeit well balanced. Wine closed down over the evening; suspect it is in the beginning stages of shutting down for a lengthy hibernation. I want more of this in my cellar.

A very good wine, showing potential upside. Tobacco, sour cherry, and earth are prominent. The 15% alcohol is well hidden. It's ripe, but not overripe. Very well balanced.

Kirsch and damp earth on the nose. Medium to full bodied with medium acidity. A mix of red and black cherry fruit, prominent, drying tannins, a bit of dark chocolate. This is deep and brooding, but balanced. It seems to have all of the components to be great but it needs years.

Brunello 2006 Horisontal Tasting: Nose: Dusty but intense blackberry fruit. Coffee and also a little eggs (sulfur).
Palate: Very dark fruit that feels a little concentrated. Compact wine but in a good balance. Toasted oak but still complex and nice.

Popped and poured the day I got it. Probably should have let it sit a few weeks but couldn’t keep hands off. Initially closed, not huge fruit, but could taste the structure. By second glass, had started to open up. Really big nose of black fruit, cinnamon, with tannins in check. Looking forward to trying again next day. Think it will merit higher score.

A superb wine. Loaded with complexity from the moment the cork was popped. Not as big and thick at the 2004. Very much a medium weight Brunello in texture but a heavy weight in flavor. Plenty of upside.

Very alive. Yum.

floral. clean forest and dark fruit nose; medium body/texture and full of still primary dry dark cherry, complex forest floor, eucalyptus, mushroom, and 'other stuff'; good acidity, medium plus finish; wine of the tasting.
