Thomas’s Northern Rhone extravaganza (Cabotte): Smoky! And with raspberry jam on the nose, too. Lingering dark brambly fruit on the palate, which was quite tannic. After a few minutes the wine went through a strange musty phase, which I was convinced was TCA, but this split opinions (including the somm, who was adamant it wasn't corked), and sure enough a little later that seemed to dissipate. Still not a brilliant wine even at its best, but definitely enjoyable.

Syrah at Cabotte (Cabotte): Quite a brambley nose. I thought this was a bit corked, as did circa 50% of the table - though our very nice sommelier was confident that it wasn’t. Whatever it was, it didn’t feel quite right to me; pretty acidic, fruit quite muted and just not that balanced.

Classic Cote-Rotie nose of black pepper, roasted herbs and dark fruit. Palate had a wonderful dark berry and black pepper note with a welcoming freshness. (Probably from the Viognier and vintage). I think this is bang on right now. Wonderful intensity without weight. Great stuff. More please.

This is ready to drink but no rush. Not a particularly strong nose on the first night but showing nice evolution on the second. This might be half way through its plateau and showed more primary first night but some tertiary notes on the second.

Deep, dense red colour. Slightly musty, corky nose - not sure it is 100% okay - not much else on the nose. Not a great deal of flavour - black fruits and a bit musty. Think this is a duff bottle.

Sublime!

What an epic wine. Drinking at its peak the body is full without being heavy, textural with finely balanced tanins, dark cherry and blackberry notes abound with no jammy sweetness. One of the finest examples of Northern Rhône I’ve had in many years.

Took a while to open up - was better on the second day, but delicious on both days. The sunshine from 2009 was evident and this is a classy Cote Rotie with typical rich red/black fruit mix and subtle tertiary aromas. Not too dark/heavy in flavour. Will be better still in a few years.

Decanted 90 minutes. Nose of tobacco, menthol, tar. On the palate, compact and savory with black raspberries, bacon fat, black pepper, black tea, medium finish. A nice cocktail wine with charcuterie.

Merci Meursault

Young, but with an hour or so of air, this seductive, supple, medium/full bodied wine is making it hard to resist its sweet, fresh, kirsch, pepper, black raspberry, spice, floral and earthy pleasure. Lots of freshness and soft textures in the fruit filled finish. Drink this while you are waiting for the La Landonne to come around.

Deep red and clear with no violet or orange hues. Open and expressive with: raspberry, bacon fat, iron/rust, and smoke. Polished mid-palate with melted texture. Intense, balanced, and precise. Tannins resolved and nice acidic lift on the finish. Really a lovely Rotie.
Day 2:
Overnight at 4C and this bottle is really singing. More opulent and luxurious on the mid palate. Just gorgeous. 93-94.

Browns suck, wines don't (Let's Try French Wines this time) (Our home): Pop and pour, the last glass was the best. I went to it after a day of drinking when we moved outside by the fire. Had I planned, a decant would have been a good idea. That said, it is drinking nicely and no real harm opening now. The nose has raspberries, some black raspberries, anise and soy. On the palate, this is not as big or full bodies as many Cote Roties. That said, everything is packed tightly and in proportion. Lots of raspberries. Nice depth. Nice mineral streak. Good acidity. Nice finish. Worked well with our dinner.

Crimson in the glass without violet hues. Floral nose with bacon, red fruit, smoke, and some black pepper. Same notes on the palate supported by generous acidity and pleasing, chalky tannins.
3/2/15: 2nd bottle: Same as first. Tart and savory. No rough edges. Tannins/Acid/Alcohol in balance. Wonderful bacon and black fruit notes.

Poured via Coravin. Bright crimson appearance. Textbook Syrah aromas of black and blue fruit, Christmas spices, bacon fat, pencil shavings, and black olives. The palate displays the complete opposite of the nose: it's mid bodied, dry, and tightly wound, featuring a restrained, Old School leanness, with woody, tart, succulent red fruit flavors, a beam of acidity, and shades of cranberries on the pinpoint finish. Needs time.
