  • Finish up. On down slope.

  • Nice. Probably on the latter end of the drinking curve. A touch of earthy spice shows itself beneath the fruit moreso than past bottles, but it's still a new world take on Syrah (and delicious).

  • Our previous bottle of this, tasted two years ago, was much too young to open. This bottle, tasted after a 3 hour decant, was delicious, and apparently just entering its drinking window. It presented generous mixed black fruits and acidity, along with the expected beef blood and olive brine. It was an outstanding bargain at $22 from Last Bottle; I should have bought many more. Drink 2018-2025.

  • This is developing nicely. Much smoother than bottle sampled seven months ago. Short decant. Dark, opaque color. Fresh black fruit nose and palate. Deep Syrah character (pepper, spice). Full body, integrated tannins with medium length finish.

  • With persian spiced lamb shanks. Chilled it a little extra before opening. This is completely hitting its stride, with nice savory notes of olive, meat--lots of beefy, bloody, smoky meat--and blackberries and something else. It's filled out, less St. Jo than C-R. I have one more left, and while there's no rush, I'm not going to wait forever as I don't see how this can get a whole lot better. Time to reload when I can find some of the more recent vintages.

  • 1.5 hour decant. Drank over 2 hours. Suboptimal glassware.

Aromas of smoked meat and very dark fruit, subtle green pepper, black pepper. Has that distinctive herbal/menthol nose of Sonoma Syrah, though less pronounced than other producers.

Light acid and tannins with much more menthol on the palette. Paired well with roast duck.

  • Tasted after a 2-hour decant.

Thin, hollow midpalate. I am surprised by the positive reviews here. Not much to it. 86 points.

Edit, 4 days later: Well, I need to revise my review of this wine. We left about 3 ounces of wine in the bottle and recorked it, and put it in the fridge. I decided to try the remainder out of curiosity, expecting it to be expired, but it is superb! It tastes and smells like a fine, well-aged Ribera del Duero. 93 points now!

The lesson here, is that serious reds need long aging,or a very long decant.

  • Really enjoyed this Sonoma Valley syrah from an under-rated producer at a recent wine dinner with good wine friends - kindly brought by good vino friend and fellow CT'er Bill Woratchek. A good QPR wine at this price point. Given a short decant and this wine could definitely stand at least a 60-90 minute decant. Sweet intense dark nose, medium bodied, good mouth feel, decent aftertaste, well balanced, softening and silky but still very present tannins and I anticipate at least another 3-5 years if cellared appropriately. This paired excellently with duck & lamb. Primary flavors included dark fruit and blackberry up front with more earthy flavors of mushrooms, game and smoke on the mid- and late palate. Definitely recommend this wine.

  • Flawed bottle. Smelled like rotten meat. Attempt to aerate made it completely dead on the palette.

  • Very nice Syrah. Varietal. Will buy again.

  • A full 3 hour decant. Better than the last bottle, but still rather thin. Definite Syrah flavors, with tar. Slight bitterness in the aftertaste. Okay for $24.

  • This wine starts with a lot of burnt underbrush up front but yields to the sweet, dark red fruits with some air. Give it 30 minutes to decant. I'm not the biggest Syrah fan so take my note and score with a grain of salt.

  • This is really coming along, but I will try not to rush the last two. Meat, blackberry, the olives are fading perhaps as tannins resolve. This is clean and crisp, but serious and dark. Midweight, which was right with the lamb chops. Tannins are silky, acids are present but mellowed. Finish is pretty long.

  • Tasty!

  • On the first night this was leaning towards being a fruit bomb, despite its low alc and good balance. On the 2nd night this is much more in balance with still distinctly Cali fruit, but with great underlying salinity which balances the fruit and gives complexity. Like the upside here 91+. I'd hold it for 3-5 years.

  • Ditto my prior comments. Not a great QPR. I expected more. Rather thin, did improve with 2-3 hour decant, but still not fabulous.

  • Popped and poured making dinner. Good weight with dark fruit and notes of leather/meat. Tannins are in balance. Will likely improve with age (unopened) and exposure to O2 (tonight's bottle). However, bottle may not survive the night the next hour. It has been a rough week.

  • Full bodied heavy wine. Very complex mineral characteristics supported by good fruit. The tannins are a bit heavy with this wine, but i think that will sort out in a few years. I think this wine is very young at this time, and will be much improved with a few years in the cellar.

  • A beautiful Sonoma Syrah (reminds me of Limerick Lane) with an enticing spicy aroma on the second day and a purple/red color out to the rim. Will last for another 3-4 years. A complex powerful nose of bright dark red fruit, cherries and blackberries. Soft, full mouthfeel, well integrated tannins, a tart acidity, powerful, notes of dark fruit and, at the moment, only a hint of meat and smoke. An extended, balanced finish with a touch of bitterness at the very end. Patience in the cellar will pay off.

  • okay wine. When first opened, pretty thin. It got better after the 3 hour decant. Not a stunning wine, but not bad for $25. Based on CT, which I find more critical than main line reviewers, I expected more. The body definitely developed after the decant. I am not sure aging will improve this wine, but I have 3 more bottles. We will see.

  • Delicious but young and undeveloped. Lots of tannins, mostly they are integrated. The acids are a little rough still. But this bodes well, because the fruit and smoky meat are not going to fade very fast. There's plenty to like in the aromas of meat, berries and violets. This is progressing, but slowly. As far as hitting its stride, I'd put the drinking window at 2017+. Need patience, but the payoff will probably be large.

  • Was expecting more from this one based on the scores. I think the lower alcohol on this one leads to the lack of depth that I was expecting. Ok for a mid week wine at a discounted price.

  • I liked this quite a bit, and thought it more in line with the N. Rhone than the other Cali Syrahs in the flight, the crowd at this tasting didn't see it the same way. They saw it as obviously Californian with about a 50/50 split like/dislike. I got leather and pepper with dark fruits backing it up. Not too heavy.

  • Fab QPR. I opened this and drank over two nights. It didn't really seem to change a lot. Great CA syrah. This was my first taste of this producer and vineyard but both were great. Esp for $25 price point. Loads of blackberry and blackcurrant. Jammy with just a bit of spice. I'm a PN drinker and this really appealed to me. Seemed very youthful.

  • See prior note. Opened two bottles for a bbq.

  • Fantastic big nose of ripe blackberries and just a hint of pepper and smoke. Palate isn't quite up to the high performing nose but lovely nonetheless. There was almost a cab-like fruit forwardness on opening but balanced out nicely after a couple hours of decanting. The drinking window through 2017 seems to significantly underestimate the life of this wine. One of the top Syrahs I've had in the last year.

  • Solid $25 syrah... rich dark fruit, balanced, not much unique character.

  • Okay, in the context of a $25 bottle of Syrah from Sonoma. Lightweight for a Syrah, with 13.2% abv. Lots of pepper and spice mid palate, but the finish leaves a lot to be desired.

  • Nose: The nose has a real savory quality to it with black cherries, black pepper, blue fruits, spice notes, mineral tones, and some violets.

Taste: Full bodied with silky tannins and medium+ acidity. There is youth to the structure with black cherries, blue fruits, spice notes, black pepper, and some incense on the back end.

Overall: While this is on the young side, it's really good. It has room to grow and will be interesting to see in a few years.

  • I should have let this get quite a bit more air as it kept evolving over the short time it took to finish this off. This is more tightly wound than the '09, tending a little more toward St. Joseph-like bright acidity and redder fruits like currants, but it still kicks in with green olive, black pepper, and a finish that hints at darker and more savory notes with time. I would venture that there will be a long future and the wine will put on weight as time goes by. I'd say it's in line with the price I paid now, like a good St. Joe, but on its way to overperforming as it fleshes out, harmonizes those savory parts, and delivers on the Jemrose promise. Looking forward to the 2012 when it becomes available. (There will be no 2011, as all the Syrah was declassed into Cardiac Cuvee.)

  • Not as open and in your face as the 09, but still a very nice wine and good value at $25.

  • P&p. It smells wonderful- floral, red fruit, olives, meat, some oak, and cool mint. It's plush on the palate, but in no way overripe or jammy. The fruit is on the cooler side of the spectrum, with loads of minerals, and some cracker pepper. It's full of tension, and the finish seems rather tight - combined with the he apparent acidity, this might be a good one to follow for 10+ years. Will let any future bottles rest a while.

  • Dinner with the Jim's (Chez Simo Bistro): Lots of good stuff going on here. Beautiful aromas of meat, spices, and dark fruits. Its core of fruit was lean and cool - harkening to a somewhat tamer version of Cornas. This should age well for quite some time. Great bottle.

  • Wind Gap Tasting with Scott Schultz (Forestville, CA): Inky black in appearance - very different from other wines it the line up. Nose explodes. Full throttle with smoky, herby, toasty, meaty, rich black fruit. Palate is rich and more fruit driven than the Wind Gap syrah. Loads of black fruit, olive, pepper and smoked meat. Long smoky finish. While larger scaled than the other more elegant wines, this is by no means a fruit monster. Well balanced and complex.

  • I just opened this tonight, and what a fantastic nose it has, full of dark berries and fragrant flowers, and I think blueberry pie describes it well, as there is the crust component. On the palate, it's full of more dark fruits, but also a great smoked meat flavor, and a very rich mouthfeel - weighty and silky. The finish is extremely clean, and has more of the floral component in the finish. I can't believe this is fairly low abv for a CA Syrah - awesome stuff.

  • Like with the 2010 grenache we tasted from composite final blend, we also did the same here with this 2010 syrah. As opposed to the 2009, which is more opulent, darker in tone, this 2010 gets down with more savory, a briny black olive aromatic (like say a Wind Gap). Full of blue fruit, meat and prominent iron. Finishes with black olive, minerality and crushed rocks. The more syrah I taste with these markers, the more I really move in this direction. Great aromatics, added by a potpourri note, it will come together and despite being a leaner year, I like it. Will be cool in coming years to put the 2009 and 2010 side by side and really show how vintage can impact a wine.

  • Barrel sample at the crush facility with Russell Bevan, Jim Mack, and assistant wine makers Alex Kanzler, and Kimberly.
Sweet rich red and black berries with wet earth, fresh cracked blacke pepper and chocolate hints, quite impressive.
Dark sleek fruit flavors dominate with peppery spices. Mouth feel is full and while a bit rough around the edges in terms of acidity, shows impressive potential for being a very balanced wine. Very long and rich finish is truly stunning. Rating a wine like this is hred for me, but I get impression this is could be the best wine they have made and score is conservative.
