Second Sunday Group: Geja's Cafe format (Marty's): Courtesy of our host. Lovely golden color with marmalade, apricot and honey notes. Pear liqueur, marmalade and stone fruit on the palate. Hint of botrytis spice in the long finish. Excellent.

1990 Bordeaux (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): This showed grapefruit and peach notes, a touch of grassiness even, with lovely fresh acidity off-setting the rich, sweet fruit. Lovely sauternes, still quite youthful!

Marmalade and pineapple Initially I thought it was fading a bit on the palate but really came to life after some time in the glass, rich and honeyed with a good acidic backbone. Very nice!

January birthday craziness (Chicago, IL): In contrast to the youthful 2001, this was showing the splendour of an aged Sauternes. Orange peel and spice notes are just beginning to emerge here. Very heavy-bodied, as is typical for the vintage, with tons of botrytis, burnt sugar, and caramel. Very well-balanced, even if this is still on the smaller side of 1990 Sauternes.

Helt gennemvædet prop og lidt dryp. Derudover perfekt kondition. Høj flot syre. Lidt fejlcastet til Tarte Tatin. Syren var for meget for den søde dessert.

A very nice dessert wine on its own, but lacks the richness and complexity of flavours found in other sauterns. Also a bit too little acidity around that I find is important to make it light and easy to drink, hangs too much on the plain sweet side.

Excellent

Igen til foi gras. Igen lidt kemi i starten. Jesper H sagde gummi/kondom. Jeg mærkede lidt brændte noter (botrytis?) udover al den eksotiske frugt. Masser af kraft. Haster ikke med at blive drukket. Men proppen er snart død, gennemvædet til ½ cm fra toppen.

PnP. Lidt kemisk (klorin, svømmehal) i duften der forsvandt senere. Lichi(?), mango og andree eksotiske dufte. Lidt tung i det, manglede syre(?). Drukket til medium styrke italienske oste. Ok match, men skal nok tænke den manglende syre i vinen ind i næste parring.

Another fairly disappointing Filhot. This is an estate I have never got on with. As a dessert wine it's fine but lacks complexity and energy. It's lowish acidity and shortish finish don't win me over.

YES. The thing that surprised me about this is its relative youth. It was still a lightish golden colour and seemed very fresh in the glass. There is a lot more lanolin in it that I like (possibly indicating its poor roots) but it was reasonably impressive. Acidity was ok and good sweetness. This is not classy but a real surprise in its quality level.

The 1990's (or any other good wine) at Uncle Jacks Steakhouse NYC (Uncle Jack's Steakhouse, New York): This wine started out as a 82 points wine. We just opened it and it had quince and was rather light. Only after about 1 hour opened, it started to gain some fat, nuts and a the classic botrytis almonds taste. This wine needs so much air, I would decant it for three hours before tasting and not drink it too cold!

Rich deep yellow apricot color. Dark rich stone fruits on the nose -- muted, not light, but rather sonorous like a bass opera star. Unctuous palate with rich nutty notes and dark baked bread and ripe peach and some caramel. Little apparent acid but still not unbalanced with too much sweetness -- great balance actually. More complex and delightful than last bottle. Definitely has opened up over the last couple years.

Rich deep yellow apricot-y color. Bass note on the nose, of dark, rich stone fruits. Palate was very pleasing unctuousness, but with less depth that I had hoped for. It has just a single note of muted nuttiness (in a good sense), with a tiny hint of bitter that I don't love. But overall quite enjoyable.

Very nice yellow/orange color. The orange peel is very strong in the mouth (much more present than to the nose), in particular it retains a light bitterness typical to citrus fruits, and a bit on the verge of fresh almonds. I like it and it has plenty of time before it become urgent to drink it.

'89 & '90, not '82. Austria, Alsace, Bordeaux, CDP, Germany, Loire. (Suba.): This came off as a straight forward, workman-like Sauternes. Darker than the '90 Huet Moelleux it was paired with, with botrytis, pineapple and butterscotch flavors and aromas. This did have a certain pureness about it and was not overdone by oak, but while good, there really was no personality or vibrancy to it. A-/B+.

The colour was about the same as I get when I take effervescent C vitanim tablets, i.e. shiny orange. I liked the acidity backbone which was very well integrated with the sweetness. These 2 components were really balancing each other out. Regarding the style, it's not a very demonstrative wine, not a powerhouse at all, the aromas are subtle but still complex. It paired very well with food and we made the comments that it was drinking like milk (except I don't drink milk but that's another story).

Yes, balance was superb, not overly sweet. But here was also one bitter note (not predominant but I didn't like it) which lowered overall score by 3 points. Just after opening some diesel (oil distillate) aroma was present. But after one hour in decanter this aroma disappeared. (88 pts)
2 weeks later: Bitter note is gone! Probably, this bitterness appeared due to wrong food pairing, in this case - Montagnolo cheese.

My best bottle of 90 Filhot so far. Not decanted, it showed the usual aromas of caramelised fruits, a zest of orange. Very good balance with nice acidic backbone, long finish. After a few days the nose is more complex with a strong coconut note, great mouthfeel.

1982 Bordeaux @ Wilf's (NYC): This explosively aromatic Sauternes gives me a glimpse into what the amomatic potential is for the 01 Suduiraut. The Filhot explodes with crazy gobbs of ripe flavors and honey succle flavors. With tropical fruit, and intense focused flavors I was afraid to taste the palate and just left the wine on my nose for a good 3 minutes. The palate is a minor let down in comparison to the 01 Suduiraut whos harmony is close to perfect. Still the 1990 is drinking great and was a fantastic effort for a Sauterne.
