  • Deep golden. Maderized and funky. Basically like drinking Amontillado.

  • Decades of 6 (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Maderised and gone. Shame.

  • Deep gold in colour. Expressive, wonderful nose, spices, caramel, honey, flowers. Again some bitterness and dryness on the palate with less depth and length than the 1987 Gran Reserva in comparison. 89-91

  • What a suprise after my last bottle. Deep, full-bodied, focused and fresh with big rich fruit, great balance and complexity and a long finish.

  • Lopez de Heredia Tasting - 4 decades (Sunfish Cellars, St. Paul, MN): Severe oxidation, sharp, nutty, phenolic, earthy. Palate is consistent. Didn't work for me, didn't hear anyone that thought this decent.

  • Drank it in 2002. The white tondonia is made in classical methods, with homemade barrels and clarified by egg whites. It is aged 7-8 years in barrels.

A beautiful golden colour, and a divine nose of oaky vanilla, almond, heather honey, and a little peach. Surprising intensity and complexity in the mouth, sort of like a dry oaky red combined with a sauternes without the sugar.

It has some acidity and tannin, and a lot of oak. Impressions of almond, tobacco, heather honey, peach and litchi (lychee). It feels good in the mouth and leaves a lasting refreshing finish. The perfect white wine for people who prefer to drink redwine!

For a grandiose wine of this quality and age it is dirt cheap, too.

  • Great bottle. Lovely golden hue with lots of vibrancy and acidity. Viscous palate and lengthy finish.

  • Heavy butter(scotch) notes, honey. High acidity, but very elegant (though it's obviously oxidated, so people unfamiliar with the Lopez white Riojas might not consider it particularly elegant). Subtle buttery flavor lingers in the aftertaste.

  • Darker than the 81: medium gold. Some lemon in a huge exotic nose with more sweetness. Brulee, grilled pineapple and banana. Bigger and fuller on the palate. Some heat - a little eau de vie. Acidic and focused - racy. Tight on finish. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

  • 12 Old Rioja: 1925-1981 (Tia Pol): What’s going on here? I’m liking dry Sherry and now a white Rioja? I normally don’t like white Rioja for the same reason I don’t like Sherry, I find them too oxidative, plus I really don’t like oak in my white wines. However, this is by far the freshest bottle of this wine that I’ve had in about 4-5 tries. Normally the butterscotch, high acidy and oxidative notes kill this wine for me, but there wasn’t any of that in this bottle, perhaps with the exception of the oak, but it was well integrated. Vibrant and clean with light coconut and lemon curd flavors and aromas. With some air, and it should be mentioned this wine spent some time in a decanter, it took on beautiful Ranier cherry flavors and aromas. Vibrant acidity. Lovely. A-.

  • Dark brown coloring with very big flavors of caramel and apple. Its a very full and somewhat overpowering wine, particularly compared with the much more nuanced '87 reserva blanco
