  • This matches almost exactly the qualities of the previous bottle from last year. (see notes) Really a wonderful drink.

  • Outstanding a prototypical Monvigliero from Burlotto with intense and distinctive stem-spice married to Nebbiolo red fruit and florals. Delicious and certainly approachable but 10+ years from peak drinking.

  • Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VIII (Chicago, IL): Now this, this is everything a Burlotto Monvigliero is cracked up to be. Clearly too young, but the stem inclusion and red fruit here makes for a very pretty wine that would be trivially easy to confuse with Burgundy on the nose. (The trick is the tannins on the palate.) This reminds me a fair bit of red Burgundy from 2008 or 2013 for its intensely perfumed red-fruited profile, but unlike those, this will need far longer to become mature.

  • La Festa del Barolo: Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Amazing wine. Reminds me a bit of fir trees, an almost peachy style of fruit and then still this really lively cleanness. Very classic and beautiful and is drinking so well now. Out of a 3L. I tried to go revisit but alas it was popular enough that it had made it to the main table and I don’t think we saw it again. It’s that kindof wine though. Just special.

  • Piemonte WIMPS (La Trompette, Chiswick, London): Mid ruby red and with wild strawberries and forest floor on the nose. Very pure fruit and silky tannins, graceful but not lacking in structure. A very soulful and complete wine, easily WOTL.

  • A singular wine with intense, soaring aromas of cherry and florals laced with reliably well integrated stem and olive brine. The palate is so elegant and refined with sneaky richness and power. Perfectly seamless already and should drink at this level for a decade+

  • This is a gorgeous barolo. Not what I normally am excited about (dark brooding types), but nonetheless... The nose is feminine with intense floral notes and berry aromas. The palate is also very refined and beautiful -- full of dark fruit, with all the qualities blended and finessed. Velvet texture with moderate and delicate tannins at the end. Given what I paid for it back in 2013 it is a bargain.

  • Barolo Tasting (Restaurant Krietsch, Schwäbisch Gmünd): Wines tasted blind. Opened a few hours before the tasting.
    Glass: WMF red Wine
Clear, medium, almost pale ruby color. Beautiful, almost intoxicating nose. Very feminine, lots of fine and pure red fruit, floral notes, airy. Immediately guessed Burlotto.
On the palate also very fine and elegant, fine red fruit, violets. Fine, velvet tannin. Beautiful harmony and balance. Long and ethereal finish. For me at its peak, but no need to hurry. This Barolo style clearly polarizes. If you are looking for the raw, rough energetic classic Barolo, Burlotto is probably not for you. I do like this style though. 94-95

  • First taste, when decanting, at 14 degrees: Spicy nose with remote echoes of strawberry, orange, olives. Notes of iron in the middle-weight taste. Beautiful retronasal finish, highly aromatic and complex. Velvet tannins. Four hours later, it is a bit more together and drinks really well.

  • Still quite jammy, actually spot-on strawberry jam. Rich yet balanced, with a sweetish midpalate, velvety tannins and salty mineral finish. Not overly developed, nicely satisfying, can take further cellaring.

  • Drunk over two days. Second half from recorked half-bottle, decanted five hours. The aromas of this wine seem extraordinarily dependent on temperature, going from strawberry jam (when very cold) via a very Burgundian fragrance to dusty, dark and spicy notes. Yesterday it was something else. Well-rounded and moderately tannic, it remains a bit elusive. Excellent drinkt but more exciting when young.

  • Wednesday night wines (Chez Pavlovich, Westchester-LA California): Where the 08 Monprivato was tight and unforgiving, this was a near 180. This was giving, fresh, and deep as tones of black olives, red cherries, strawberries, roasted herbs, licorice, spice notes, earth, raspberries, crushed rocks, rose petals, violets, and pipe tobacco meld beautifully with a very youthful appeal. The Medium/full bodied feel is balanced and deep with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins. Make no mistake, this is still a baby and there is a very long life ahead of it. I wouldn't really call this close to maturity yet either, but with air, this is just the knockout that I would expect it to be. There is the lighter touch that Burlotto brings along with all sorts of depth and wonderment across the nose and palate.

  • -- popped and poured --

NOSE: high-toned; some V/A; fairly open and giving.

    BODY: medium-light to medium bodied.

TASTE: leathery cherry. Better than four years ago.

  • I liked this four summers ago, when it was just trying to turn secondary, but now we are definitely there. The palate is very open and giving, yet retaining a slight sense of firmness and backbone, making for excellent balance. The red fruit is very fresh and elegant, with the herbal element that was so harsh in its youth, now fully integrated. Some floral and white spice character add complexity. Not as cloyingly sweet, and overtly strawberry as the 06’ had a few years back, this is showing a good savory streak to balance its sweetness. It finishes good and medium, with fine tannins, though the real joy here is on the palate, having a weightlessness that’s unique in Barolo. An excellent and classic Monvigliero, those who know this wine should be happy when they open their bottles.

  • Continues to develop in a positive way. Typical mushed mature strawberries, rosehip and dried roses-galore. Very generous nose with lots of layers and plenty complexity. Old leather, cherries, dried herbs, paint box and so on. Keep reading about those tapenade-notes and sure, if you're looking they are definitely there. Burlottos Monvigliero follows a clear pattern with its sweet strawberries/tapenade-notes on the nose and in this '08 they are very prominent. Excellent nose.
Lots of structure also with high quality tannins and proper acidity. The fruits gets a little dry/more mature on the palate. Leans towards more tertiary notes of leather and tar. Long aftertaste, overall a very elegant package. Hard to call this drinking window wise, I personally find it nearing its peak but if you want the real maturity you'll have to wait a good 5-10. That's my guess anyway.
I've got one more bottle and I'll try to stay away from it the coming 5.
Side note; payed 310 skr (around €30) for this back in the days. Mind-boggling.

  • First half, opened and poured. This is the first time, I have found the often mentioned tapenade aromas, but they quickly disappeared. Dark fruits, spices, roses rather than strawberries, multiple dimensions. Somewhat murky in the mouth with prominet tannins and high acidity.

Second half, kept in the fridge till the next day, decanted six hours. More whole and harmonious nose with all the elements integrated. Still a bit disjointed in the mouth but with a very fine aftertaste. Still somewhat elusive. Happy that I haven't paid $200. Hope I can keep my hands off the remaining bottles.

  • A somewhat strange Monvigliero experience. Tasted 2 month apart (first Glass with CORAVIN). The bouquet had a lot of dark aromas with blackberries, dark chocolate and even some elderberries but no red berries where soever. I would have a hard time to identify this Barolo if tasted blind, especially for a more classic vintage.
On the palate this is definitely an excellent wine, quite full bodied with a silky finish.
Not sure where this wine will go from here or this is an off time. Obviously only time will tell.

  • Cutting to the chase, give it another 3+ years for the tannins to balance out; making a private note to pop my last bottle in 2023, giving it a full 15 years. Now the full evaluation:

Decanted over a waterfall aerator, as I knew questo uomo needed a chance to breathe after sleeping for dodici anni. Initial notes of muted red apple and persimmon with mulled spices as it was being poured. Out of the decanter, I separately poured off a 6 oz portion into a smaller decanter and a portion into a glass to check the evolution. Ultimately gave it about 5 hours before getting serious, when Mrs. Knurd and I drank through it in about 2 hours.

Wow, ok have to start somewhere with the complex panoply of aromas and flavors- bright red cherries and anise, blackberry preserves on toast, sour blackberry and bittersweet chocolate, cherry menthol and tobacco, hint of tarty green nearly ripe strawberries ad cracked pepper, sweet red apple flesh like (pink lady came to mind), and some "wait was that a watermelon jolly rancher" mixed in just to make sure you are paying attention.

Tannins are definitely providing all of the initial structure and the rugged mouthfeel, starting out dusty and transitioning to woodsy and then leathery as it gets maximum aeration, contributing to most of the earthy elements described above. Oak and alcohol seem to be will balanced however it does take the acidity roughly 30 seconds to really kick in.

Ultimately it settled at a tannic > acid state, with a core of tertiary aged Barolo notes framed by a border of primary red fruit and a spicy finish. While still very good, I think it needs the full 15 years for the scales to start tipping into the favor of the (ample) acidity. Overall Evaluation: A- (92), considering considering the development and complexity that could be sensed over the tannin and especially considering the 2 bottles I got a hold of were < 50 bones.

  • Half of the bottle poured into half-bottle for later use, the other left to breathe for three hours. Somewhat reticent but close-knit and intense, it had notes of dust and the usual olives and strawberry though the latter was very discrete. Quite a lot of body with great tannins (noticeable even with a somewhat greasy dish). Still early days but very promising. So different from the 2006 Roagna vigna Rionda we had yesterday.

The second half, drunk after decanting for an hour, after one day in the fridge, had a more complete taste but the nose was more elusive. A great wine in the making and more substantial than on previous occasions.

  • First post-COVID dinner at Chez Marina et Jeff: What was that?!?!? The nose is just bizarre. Like a huge combination of elderberries and blackberries, with a touch of fizz. It's not even that this was unusual for Barolo, I've never had a bottle of wine quite like this. The palate wasn't too weird, but after the nose it was hard to reconcile it with anything. A very strange wine. I'm hoping this was an off bottle from my remaining 3 pack, as this is not what I'm hoping for......

  • Double decanted about three hours before dinner. This is stellar! Medium-light ruby color, beautiful floral aromas, lots of roses. Palate is tar and anise, nice plush fruit, fairly substantial tannins, marvelous structure. A bit of heat is the only nit. This will go many more years. Love it!

  • Served blind. very light. pale in color. strawberry, cranberry. persistent and pretty, but didn't seem characteristic of barolo. I certainly didn't guess this.
I have 2 bottles in cellar and not sure whether to let this age or drink on shorter term based on this tasting.

  • Hellrote, schon leicht ins bräunlich gehende Farbe. Sehr eleganter, trinkanimierender Wein. Langer und intensiver Abgang. Punktabzug wegen des vergleichsweise hohen Preises. Sollte jetzt getrunken werden. Höhepunkt ist möglicherweise schon überschritten.

  • Auzone Burlotto vertikal (MK) #3:

Extreme strawberry perfume initially, fades a little with time in glass, early maturity notes, chocolate, coffe, wardrobe.

Lower tannins, medium acidity, round and smooth, smoky notes, less resistance on the palate.

A little tired, mushroom, bouillon, prunes, cookie dough, meat. 93p

  • This was straightforwardly wonderful. Half of the bottle poured into half-bottle and put in the fridge, the other half left to breathe in the bottle for one hour. Drunk at under 14 degrees out of Zalto burgundy glasses. In the nose, strawberries transition into darker, more spicy notes, probably what people call olive tapenade, which I don't recognise. Elegant, with tannins that seem to be delicious. Overall, very approachable and in good balance. Lovely wine.

On the third day, the second half shows lots of finesse, even a kind of grand cru weightlessness.

  • Slightly odd, musty, nose when first opened, which blew off completely with a couple of hours in the decanter. Amazingly ripe blackcurrant fruit underneath - almost like ribena - that again calmed down a bit. Delicious, fresh, structured but light bodied, but also quite atypical barolo... Perhaps the most extrovert bottle of Burlotto I've had, but not the most elegant.

  • Even my darling Burlotto can disappoint apparently. Don't know if it's a weak vintage, bad bottle or storage. In your face pickled strawberries dominates the nose. Juicy lemonade with alcohol, pure and clean but lacks in structure. Creamy texture, prunes, wild strawberries, weak acidity. 89p slightly better on day 2 when served cool.

  • An unusual Barolo. Softened tannins, made me think it was either much older or not holding up. But over time in the glass, long secondary notes (dark cherry, ripe forest berries) emerged, and the finish was silky smooth and long. Lucky to have a few of these before everyone else discovered!

  • Taken from the 14 degree wine fridge and opened and drunk over three quarters of an hour out of Zalto Bugundy glasses. Exciting nose of sweet fruits, not just strawberry, and an interesting dusty medicinal note, a bit like a Chambolle mixed with a peaty malt whisky. Hard to pin down in the mouth, lots of tannin but in friendly way, and medium body. Complex and elusive.
Two days later, the second half from recorked half-bottle, decanted two hours: Sweet red fruit of undefinable character with smoky licorice notes. Tannins appear less prominent. Excellent, still on the young side.

  • Clearly my favorite Burlotto Monvigliero yet, having tasted the '08 and 10' on release and the 06' a year or so ago. Found this much more direct and pure (as opposed to the 06'), with good concentration and secondary effects starting to take shape. The stems have really integrated well since release. Dense fruit with strawberry and tar for days.

Price tag was $55 five years back, wish I'd bought many more. This is going to be a lot of fun over the next 5+ years. Just checked current prices...ouch.

  • -- popped and poured (?) --
-- tasted a couple pours blind over approx. 1 hour --

NOSE: unmistakeable strawberry jam, with a supporting note of leather.

    BODY: medium bodied.

TASTE: red-fruited; an earthy/brown soil note, too. Looked and tasted older than it is --- I think I guessed '99-ish for vintage --- so I'm not quite sure what to make of that; if this bottle was representative, then I'd say best to drink sooner than later.

  • A real roller coaster to follow this wine. Last bottle I found too sweet and totally dominated by strawberries. This bottle has settled down and become more balanced, still with the pretty notes of crushed red berries in the front but also multiple layers of leather, herbs, salvia, menthol and rosehip. Entering the first phase of early maturity with polished tannins and balanced acidity. Long aftertaste. The word 'burgundian' comes to mind, so elegant. Good news as I have a couple of bottles left. No hurry of course but I don't think this will hold for decades, a couple of years between the last bottles will be my strategy from now on.

  • Pop and pour, then half the bottle was held overnight. On the first night this was closed and not showing much -- camphor on the nose and strawberry on the palate, with moderate tannins and a short to medium finish. This was more interesting on the second day, with a nose of camphor and a faint lemony note, and rose petals, faint cherry, strawberry, and notes of lemon citrus and tapenade on the medium finish, with strong acidity and light tannins. This needs several years. Good value at about $50.

  • DEGUSTO - NEIVE: Degustato alla cieca.
Molto etereo e riscaldante.

  • Took a very, very long time to wake up. After 5 hours of air, it seemed to finally take on some nice floral notes with subtle red fruit undertones. Big picture, however, is that it's way too young.

  • A unique and compelling young Barolo. This was a neat combination of the Northern Rhone and Barolo. I say that because I got this very energetic olive and meat note on the nose that I usually associate with Northern Rhone syrahs. Additionally, this had beautiful red florals, some lighter red fruits, and earth - traditional Barolo characteristics. Plenty of structure and firmness for this wine to go many many years. Very interesting wine.

  • Strawberry inferno on the nose, totally dominant. Also rosehip, vanilla and a touch of liquorice. Light, fresh and mineral. Fine and young tannins, medium acidity. Lightly textured, some sweet liquorice in the aftertaste but still, all about the strawberrys. This wine make me a bit perplexed, liked it a lot two years ago and expected a great future. Not so sure about that anymore, at all. Find it too sweet, the fruit is almost nothing but smashed strawberrys. Not sure there’s enough structure and fruit for this to develop in a satisfying way, perhaps the fruit will become too jammy? Anyway, time will tell, what I do know is that this doesn’t match my preferences right now. Drinkable and nice at the moment.

  • That amazing, crazy tapenade nose when first opened really couldn't belong to many other wines. Not typical barolo, but unique… After a very long decant was a bit more conventional, and sweeter strawberry fruit was showing as well. Not overly tannic, but it feels a bit unresolved and adolescent in some ways - I think there is a more subtle wine waiting to emerge with maturity. God lord it is interesting as it is though.

  • The grasshopper in Greenblanket loved the friendly accessibility of this wine but his inner ant wanted it to be in a reticent and ungiving dumb phase needing eight more years of development before it revealed it's slender, nuanced nature. WTF, It was delicious and true to it's roots and just great even with our Sunday Night Dinner Peruvian grilled chicken.

  • Pure strawberry jam on the nose, with a hint of figs and liquorice - almost grenache-like. A bit jammy on the palate too, with sweet fruit, medium acidity and sandy mid-weight tannins, that are not overly structured. Perhaps we'd expected more freshness, slenderness and elegance, with memories from last year's tasting. But it's a generous wine, easy to enjoy. The rich alcohol doesn't burn and and the jamminess goes well with cheese. Probably better drunk young - it might get heavier with time.

  • Gorgeous nose of strawberry, cinnamon spice, herbs and olive that seems to be signature of Burlotto’s Monvigliero. Young but so airy and elegant. This has put on some weight as it shows more of the 2008 silky sweet tannins and less dusty stems than the last bottle 6 months ago. The crystalline purity of the red berry fruit and overall balance make this is absolutely delicious right now. The lithe and bright acidity suggests very a promising future. Very Vosne-Romanee but inthe ocntext of barolo.

Texturally, the 2008 is even silkier than the densely packed 2006 and the forward 2009.

I ordered online from vine2home. The owner couldn't be nicer and the bottles have all been pristine... not to mention insanely good pricing. I happily stocked up.

  • My guest getting Burlotto blind says: "This is a little bit like a Pinot Noir from Burgundy, just better ..." I see where she's coming from, even though the tannin structure is very determined in not being from Burgundy. But the strawberries, the minerality and herbaceous spiciness sure has a Burgundian touch. But with a little bit of time this reveals it's origins more with a touch of rosehip, tannins that are ripe but very much there, minerality goes toward a gravelly road that saw rain yesterday, you get just a tiny bit of menthol freshness to the fruit and an acidity that works wonders with the elk casserole stuffed with autumn chanterelles. It fools around with light, very red berries, but also licorice/tar. The dark fruit that manages to be filled with light is so Barolo. Burlottos Monvgliero is a beauty in this vintage too.

  • Intense herbaceousness and potpourri dominate the nose with dusty strawberry fruit on the palate. Seems to be missing the mellow sweetness of the tannins that I love in the 08 barolos - a result of whole cluster? Great burgudian balance of power-to-weight and exceptionally soft and polished mouthfeel. Shuts down tight, even after a 12 hour slow o in the bottle but suggests it will evolve into something unique and seductive down the line.

Worth noting that their straight Nebbiolo is a wonderfully well made wine and consistent with this classic house style.

  • Decanted one hour. Impressive nose with great aromatic complexity: Burgundian notes of cherry with a touch of strawberries; something fragrant and liqueur-like; a touch of spirits; spicy, earthy, tarry tones. Rather closed on the palate; even seems to be much less sweet and tannic than the 2007 or 2006 (or the 2008 Acclivi). Needs air and time. - On the second day, from a recorked half-bottle, decanted 2+ hours. At first, when very cold (10 degrees), a curiously Beaujolais-like nose turning into distinct strawberry jam; with higher temperatures more muted, earthy. Relatively lean taste with surprisingly little tannin apparent; earthy tones, oriental spices, a beautiful Burgundian sweetness, and some camphor notes when warmer. More elusive and intriguing than the 2006 was at the same age, and more difficult to understand than the Acclivi 2008.

  • Decanted for 11 hours. Disappointing, but only because the first time I had this I was blown away by how good it was. It's still very good, with lots of sweet licoricey red fruit and spice from the whole-cluster, but the fruit isn't quite as pure as I remember and the tannins are a little more drying and not nearly as soft and silky.

  • Bel Air Bacchanal (Los Angeles, California): Feminine, elegant, and weightless. Herbal and menthol notes complement Monvigliero's olive tapenade signature. Light to medium bodied with balanced tannic and acidic structure. Cool mountain spring water of great, stony mineral content percolates through red fruits and eucalyptus before dancing over your palate. By the way, that's 92 points with quite a lot of room for improvement (revisit in 2023+).

  • The 2008 Movigliero is a beautiful wine which will appeal to people who enjoy a more feminine expression of Nebbiolo. The wine opened with lots of high-toned, pure, red fruit that made me think Pinot Noir. However, with about 3 hours of air more typical Nebbiolo aromas came through. Upon opening, the wine was very hard/dark on the palate but with air this too became more expressive. The silky texture of the wine and impeccable balance were noteworthy.
My only concern - which did not stop me from grabbing a few more bottles of this (& the 06 too) - was that I felt like I was picking up a little heat/alcohol in the nose - sorry I lack the wine-vocabulary to explain this more clearly. Even so, I enjoyed this very much and will tuck these deep in the cellar.

  • Immensely impressive, something that is worth seeking out, and buying in quantity if you plan to enjoy in the long or short terms. I'm not sure the notes on CT do the aromatics and structure the justice they deserve. If I can find some, I'd likely sit on them for a few years, but since the bottle we enjoyed at this particular CT offline (#14) was so good on pop n pour, I'd not hesitate to enjoy it in its youth, either. If the CT avg of $50 is correct, this merits a full case purchase, if you can swing it. highly recommended

  • Tasted at the estate with Fabio, one of the more thoughtful (and I think, ultimately, inspired) winemakers I have met. Nose is 'pondy' to faint farmyard in initial character, in a huge, round ball of soft summer fruit. That's obviously whole-cluster, and is rather simple/singular at this age. In the mouth, slightly front-palate - it closes off - but that's immaturity too. A light feel, but it's a firm material within. Soft edges to that… it's liquid silk. Quite saturating; perhaps less so that the previous wines… but overall it's more harmonious - the components are significant but transparently together. Mouth is less dry than before. Some darker aspects linger - liquorice+. We had a deadline for our next appointment, so my slow brain wasn't able to bring my thoughts together in time to buy more than a bottle of this. The thing that struck me when reviewing my notes was that useful wine tasting is often about assessing what a wine will become. This one has so much class that it should be quite complete with time: a billowing nose and a no-holes, medium-bodied, weightless-yet-important palate. It should be an inherently haunting wine. In class (if not in completely in style) it's right up there with the better Dujac wines we tasted at the end of the trip. If I don't manage to secure some of this back at home, all toys will be out of pram! 96-97, 96...+.

  • This is as impressive a vintage of Burlotto Monvigliero as I've ever had, and it's certainly the most beautiful showing I've ever gotten from one right on release. The elegance is such that it almost feels Burgundian. The fruit profile is still very basic so its appeal at this point comes from texture and mouthfeel. The word "pliant" feels appropriate but that's just part of it; it gives you this sensation like one of those high-end leather garments that's soft as butter and thin as silk.
