  • During a GE/AUT blind tasting. We had the 1996, 2005 and 2007 in a flight next to each other. All of them showed really well. The 1996 had the most complex tertiary nose with lots of Lychee aromas, the 2005 was the richest, with lots of layers of lemon and yellow fruit and the 2007 the lightest with the most precision. It was really a matter of taste which one you liked the most. I scored all of them 95-96. Spätlese at its best.

  • - Blind, GE/AUT tasting
    - Three Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese were served.

    1996:
    - floral, quince, honey but so lean and simply elegant and so complex but still precise. Has enough fullness and sweetness but balanced with a great acidity. Probably one of the best white wines I have drunk so far.
    - 96p

    2005:
    - Riper and more quince and honey, more body and beautiful stony flavours. Compared to the other two, the most intense Prüm.
    - 95p

    2007:
    - Aroma profile similar to the other two but leanest and most precise.
    - 94p

  • Assorted riesling at D Cuisine (Chicago, IL): Oddly not as sculpted and racy as my previous bottles (though the last time I had a sound one was a few years ago). This has a peachy quality to this, and the wine comes off as a little diffuse and lacking precision. Still plenty of 1996 acidity, but this doesn't have that mineral backbone and structure that I expected.

  • As always what an experience to drink these wine with a bit of age.
Beautiful on the nose, soft petrol, light toffee ) one of our friends commented reminds me of the smell of sea but she is from Naples so probably everything smell of see for her) . The palate is lacking , needs more weight and energy and we felt this is the limits of spatlese in this vintage and we would suggest one drinks sooner than late. Beautiful 93

  • #08-97, 8% abv. I must admit to being not as enamoured of this bottle as I was previously (though that was a fair number of years ago). A bit of sponti on the nose, as well as the archetypal creamy blue cheese notes from aged wines of this vineyard. There is a touch of custard as well, and underpinning it all a fair bit of tart fruit. On the palate, this is quite dry, at least by modern standards. A spätlese that runs on its acids more than anything. The fruit isn't prominent -- this is a sculptural, chiselled example of Mosel riesling.

  • Absolutely amazing, near-perfect feinherb-style aged riesling. All slate and fruit on the nose. No discernible petrol. Slightly effervescent, adding interest to a very refreshing wine. Palate oozes lychee, honeysuckle, lime, and grapefruit. Impeccable balance: flint, slate, citric acid, tangy fruit, with touch of sugar to balance it all. The finish lasts for minutes.

  • Light gold or maybe even lighter. A lovely 96-ey weight and balance - citrus and slate, riper pineapple hints emerging over time, and a piercing and attractively fresh note of lime showing through the mid palate. Very much a Spatlese weight and now with a slightly honeyed texture. Drinking well now and for a decade. ****

  • Beautiful Spatlese. Not very sweet, more medium-dry, this has aged incredibly. Tropical fruit, exotic spices and a long finish... one to sit with and ponder!

  • Medium yellow color with yellow fruits and white flowers on the nose. The palate is a bit creamy with lemon curd, smoke and yellow apples. There's just enough sweetness to keep the electric spine of acid from becoming unruly. Make no mistake though, this is not sweet by conventional standards and registers more like a Kabinett feinherb than a Spät.

The small amount that was left overnight was even more delicious on day 2; no rush to drink.

  • Outstanding once again. One of the best balanced 96s I've had, with incredible clarity and freshness to the citrus and apple fruit, and added layers of minerality, flowers, and maturing lemon cream notes adding complexity. It comes across less sweet than many modern Kabinetts, with the restrained sweetness buffered by the powerful acidity of the vintage, and tremendous length on the finish.

  • Decades of 6 (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Such a joyful wine, bright and fresh still and with lots of life ahead. Light petrolly nose, touch of caramel, very mineral aftertaste and long finish. A textbook mosel Riesling with acidity to last another decade easily. Beautiful wine. 94

  • AP #8-97. Brilliant wine. 1996 is not my favorite German vintage, but this is a masterpiece of balance - it has the powerful, almost screechy acidity of '96s, moderate sweetness on a lightweight frame, and yet all the flavours, sweetness, and acidity here come together in a very seamless whole. The aromatics are classic Prüm, still showing some of that sponti funk and sulfur amidst bright florality, stony minerality, apple and citrus flavours, and some maturing lemon cream and smoky notes. There's tremendous depth on the palate and remarkable length. Glad that I have another bottle.

  • #08-97, 8% abv. Though the Prüm wines of today may not show quite as much reduction and sponti as their historical reputation would suggest, this bottle sure did live up to that myth. Lots of sponti on the nose, as well as a bit of that funk that I find often in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr bottling. There's a nice vein of golden apple sweetness on the nose as well. The 1996 vintage has been one of extreme acids, and this is true to that characterization. This has amazing drive and focus, and must be just getting into its secondary phase. There's precisely the right amount of sweetness to keep that crazy acidity from becoming out of balance, and in fact, the sweetness here serves to rein in the screaming minerality as well. An archetype of Spätlese.

  • A year and a half since our last encounter with this beautiful wine (Papies 93) and once again this was such a beauty, effortless beauty and charm.
Lovely ripe fruit, well secondary, light petrolly touch on the nose, light caramel so complex. On the palate it is still very much alive and vibrant, and does not seem to be letting go and we look forward at having the last 2 bottles in a few years. Very special. 93-94

  • These oldie Spatleses have an almost effortless charm, and without trying deliver ever time. Such a pure wine, superbly balanced, firm acidity and with a lovely sweet ripe core. Petrolly nose, floral, ripe fruit and full of life. This is a beauty now but will carry on evolving for a long time. If you come across them snap them. 93 easy

  • AP #8. Medium-deep gold. Mature nose of petrol, honey, ripe apple, apricot, brown spices a touch caramel. Beautiful entry of crisp acid and ripe fruit. Really two toned with lively and racy acid that transforms into ripe golden and red apple fruit. Acid receeds into the background, but holds well throughout. Showing maturity and some bitter pit fruit on the end-middle finish. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16.5/20.

  • No boechsle. No sulfur. Generous and soft for this vintage. Really truly spot on.

  • Very nice but not as good as the 2001. The 96 has much more acid while the 01 is softer and the fruit comes out to play a little more.

  • Prum Wehlener Sonnenhur Dinner (Peach Farm, Chinatown, Boston): This was my favorite of a very nice flight. The expected excellent acidity of '96, but in balance --this is Prum after all. Extraordinary depth of secondary fruit flavors. I'd say fully mature though of course will go much longer. Thanks Pmac!

  • Mature Classified Growth Bordeaux gathering at Lavandou (Washington DC): Petrol, honey, mango and yellow peach. Bright acidity, nice definition and incredibly light yet intense palate. Just simply delicious.

  • AP #8. White raisins, grape, honey, flowers and apples on the nose. Huge acid - lime flavors, lots of steely minerals, green apple. Finish is electric. Nose - 4/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 17/20.

  • This was a high-acid vintage so the wine has always maintained a high acid level but the fruit has held marvelously well and now everything is in balance. A funky nose of petrol, cinnamon and carbonated minerals. On the palate it is still very juicy and crisp with excellent intensity and saturated, mature fruit flavors of grapefruit and sour apples. The finish is tingly with complex minerals and notes of apple-spice. This is a classic, authentic Mosel riesling that really shows the slate/mineral side of where it comes from and it has many years of drinking left. Just superb if you like terroir-driven, steely-textured wines.

  • Bright yellowish color, nose of petroleum , white flower, lemon and pineapple. Palate is so lively and young compare to the one we hard in Lam Soon, this one still display lot of tropical fruits with the typical slight sweetness of a spatlese. The finished is reasonably good. Wish have more of this.

  • MO collection and tasting (Richfield, Lam Soon Building, Singapore): Golden yellow colour with a few spritzy bubbles lining up along the sides of the glass. The nose offered a touch of petrol and a tiny whiff of mushrooms, before unfolding into tones of peach, grenadine, musk, white flowers, nectar, honey and bramble, all underpinned with Mosel slatiness that grew in intensity with time in the glass. As consistent with JJ Prum's style, it was attractive, lovely and layered without needing to shout. The palate was beautiful as well, but rather more muted than the nose. Great balance, but still very youthful, with a touch of spritzy sparkle, clean acidity and lot of weighty, rubbery grippiness holding up flavours of lime, grapefruit and emerging white fruits. Absolutely delicious at the moment but, given the (relative) simplicity on the palate, I got a sense that this wine was just about coming into itself, with its best drinking at least a good 2-3 years away.

  • Balance and elegant aromas of grapefruits and slight petrol. The age seem to have mellow down the sugar level on the palate as this is a spatlese and i would have expected it to be sweeter. A very enjoyable drink with mild acid still detectable, excellent quaffer and refreshing drink...

  • Light gold color, muted aromas of cinnamon and baked butter crust. Round and rich on drinking, tho only slightly sweet. Apple pie spices with lemony top-note. Muscular, mature, deep, with long finish. Much evolved since last try in 2001, might benefit from some more time in bottle.

  • Lovely aged Riesling that sports complex flavors of petrol, sweet grass and resins. This has lost most of its sweetness but has become wonderfully complex. Still remains tingly and fresh with a succulent finish. Wonderful and ready now.

  • Dinner at Zealous (Chicago): A lovely bottle from 375. Green apples with a touch of petrol on the nose, and it began to show some yellow fruits and slate with air. In the mouth this has a wonderful balance of sweetness and racy acidity, which really makes it move across the palate. A lingering finish of the fruit and minerality. Not the most complex wine, but drinking very well right now from this format.
