Viva La Rioja!
special vineyards, old vines, 80-100 years old, 15% CS, 85% Tempranillo, 21 months in french oak; dark translucent red-purple-brown; quality ripe dark cherries nose with oak-earthy notes, coffee hints; soft integrated tannins, rich ripe cherries flavours, coffee, leather, tobacco, fine structured and complexity, tart, excellent balance & harmony, at peak

Herederos del Marqués de Riscal's modern offering comprised of about 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Tempranillo actually has roots in and is influenced by their Cuvée Medoc label made in the first half of the 20th century and their long tradition producing wines with French varietals. As I opened this wine a third of the cork disintegrated and fell into the wine but I was able to fish all of it out over 10 minutes and pour a proper second glass with no cork. The Chirel was dusty, red berried and smoky on the nose which also prominently shown a strong sage (maybe some rosemary as well) aromatic component. On the well structured palate first came cherry and blackberry out of which an impressively fresh acidity emerged that accented the vibrancy of the fruit. Some nuanced savory notes were there for flavor hunters like cedar, leather, ash, game and pepper. The tannins provided an elegant grip that aided in reinforcing the structure and rounding out this older Rioja.
2001 Rioja (Maryland): Much darker color. Initially a bit musty on the nose (“like dune sand and library dust” – I’m not sure either but that’s what I have written down). Shifts to a rich, dark fruit profile with lots of bay leaf and chewing tobacco. Firm grip on the palate, medium acid, the currant and dark plum fruit is rich and smoky. I was pulling out all sorts of interesting but quirky elements of tree bark, anise, animal hide and campsite. Finishes firm and sooty. This wine has a significant percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, which really makes it stand out against the other wines in the tasting and offered an interesting comparison. One to revisit in five or six years.

Bright medium ruby. Enticing nose of ripe cherries, spice and cola. Beautifully balanced and long palate with bright fruit, some gamey leathery complexity and silky tannins. Drinking beautifully now but no rush to drink.
This was third bottle we have had and best so far. The highlight is the nose which was a truly wonderful. This had more complexity than previous bottles and plenty of length. However it is not up there with Rioja Alta and other more traditional wines. It appears to have been made more for oomph than sophistication. I will leave the last bottle for three years to see if the remaining tannins adjust this. At he current price no more than a two bottle wine on the Hugh Johnson scale.

Drinking well, but can certainly go another 5 years plus. Tannins have almost integrated fully, nice oak and good fruit. A very nice rioja, but for the price much prefer La Rioja Alta or Cune's imperial gran reserva.

This is a lovely wine. It possesses old world charm with notes of strawberries, figs and olives. Fine tannins and medium length. Sweet finish, very balanced and while ready to drink now could continue to please for a few more years.

Nice coloring around the edges, giving away its age. Oak on the nose is prominent, but the taste has more of a mineral quality. The fruit has faded a bit, though the tannins are still there (pleasant, not harsh at all). Satisfying finish, average in length.

Great concentration and depth. Balance still towards fruit rather than earth. Drank side by side with the regular reserva. Pretty equal but five times the price. Liked this one better at first but at one hour the reserva opened up more and held equal to this.

Wine buddies CS 2001 evening at Shlomo (at Shlomi Gradman): Blind tasting. Dark red/black with orange rim. Earthy aroma of heavy wet soil. Moss & mushrooms. Some acidity, lots of tannins, low harmony. short after taste. over the peak. somewhat flat.

Big, rich and modern, with a touch of elegance! Nice and with deep concentration! Far too young to enjoy, but has the potential to be really fantastic!

Tasted blind. Opaque, dense. Slow to open. Cherry, oak, herbs on the nose. Full bodied, silky tannins, rather mineral and peppery. Spicy aftertaste. Good, but nothing exciting at the moment.

Rather lovely; not too modern. Plenty of stuffing, showing a darker richer and sweeter profile than the 2001 LdH Tondonia alongside.
