  • Sappy raspberry and strawberry nose. Similar fruit profile on the palate, medium-bodied with a firm acid spine, a burr of tannins on the midpalate, reasonable length. Not too much tertiary development to date, probably a softening/integrating of fruit.

  • Bill & Crew - Offline #2 - Hartsyard Farewell: Blind. Very herbal and green on the nose, dominating any other elements that might be there. Palate does show more fruit and some depth but the green edge is hard to get past. This bottle was tough to find enjoyment in.

  • Enjoyed this a lot more than my first bottle, the wine still contains its potent red fruit profile, there's some whole bunch character that is integrated now. Balanced. Under cork, and this bottle professionally cellared since release, this wine has sufficient structure to be allowed to cellar for more years. Keen to see what the remaining bottles will do.

  • Quite ripe with a certain opulence, smooth and sappy, fine tannins, great length. Black cherries, rhubarb, oak is there, just missing a little subtlety and nuance and for me just a touch heavy.

  • Tart cherries and spice with a brackish bitterness and earth to close (which I suspect is whole bunch influenced). Consumed with tortellini and sun dried tomato, the acid and slightly bitter profile slice through the richness of the dish to provide perfect counterpoint. A lovely wine with excellent length; in the words of Sir Mix-a-lot, its "...long and strong, it's gonna get the friction on!"

  • Is it Pinot? nice wine, however none of the PN qualities I was looking for. Easy drinking with fruit and a little earth. Do no keep but drink now

  • Excellent wine, 13.5% alc.
    Colour: quite deep black berry
Bouquet: red and blue berries, leather and tobacco characters
Palate: similar flavours to nose, quite voluptuous and full bodied, some violets, berry mouthfeel, good clean finish. Not entirely varietal though and more regional character - could be a cool climate Syrah.

  • This has changed a lot in the last year- more approachable and better integrated. An absolute mouthful- pure fruit dominating with lovely cloves and spice making it interesting and intense. Last review I thought central Otago in styling/structure now Beaune 1 Cru. It should keep improving.

  • Drinking beautifully now. Disagree with some previous tasters - I think this has excellent balance and a good 4 or 5 years of life. The fruit is savoury sweet and the wood treatment is there and holds structure very well. Excellent wine making from Farr.

  • Quite different in character to the usual New Zealand pinots I am used to but thoroughly enjoyable. Medium light bodied wine of bright burgundy colour. Bouquet of plum and chocolately spice is almost sweet in its intensity. Initially the wine is almost miserly in its minerally austereness but there is hints of plum and spice. This leads into an intense orange citrus burst that nicely balances out the wine. This has a medium long finish suggesting cherries, plums and spice. Goods stuff. Quite different and unique but very enjoyable.

  • This was spectacular…..
Tonnes of soy, spice, incense, flowers, minerals and ash
Palate is so svelte and polished….stems, incense, black cherry, spice, flowers and earthy ash.
    Finish is long….pretty wine.

  • Still stalky with ashy notes as well. The fruit is there but will this ever balance out?

  • From Coravin. Black rather than red berries, slight coffee grinds and stalks, autumnal left notes, herbaceousness and ash. In the mouth it's almost blackberry fruit, tangy, slight sapply stalkinesss and a bitter but fine tannin all carry on the long finish. Quite savoury and, with time, a star anise quality comes to the fore. Hmm.

  • Opened and poured. This wine is big, intense and brooding with rich black berry character. Softened and intergrated after an hour with some savoury flavours starting to emerge but still dominated by its intense fruit. Did I like the wine - not sure. I don't think at this stage the sum of the parts has evolved into a satisfying and approachable wine. Not an elegant style at all. Reminds me of a very big Central Otago wine. If you like that style go for it. Certainly needs to be matched to appropriate food, decanted for 1 hour at least and probably left in the cellar for a couple more years before trying again.

Served upon opening, no decanter available. First impression this is a big wine, touch of browning in colour & only at 4 years of age. Aromas of chocolate & red berries to begin, heading to whole bunch & vegetal characters of stalk & mesculin lettuce.
With time in the glass, sweet blue & blackberry fruits on the palate, delicate oak starting to show. Medium-full bodied for a Pinot with the taste of black tea on the finish.
Look forward to seeing how this opens up, or revisit in 2 years.
    Paired w Italian & Spanish meat & cheese :)

  • Popped and poured.
    Open for one hour.
    Medium dark garnet in colour.
Medium nose, sweet red cherries, earthy. Time open develops attractive spice.
Continues as a quite heavy, earthy first pour from bottle open.
After an hour, much improved medium body with silky texture, medium red fruits becoming more prominent after an hour (am I repeating myself?) less noticeably earthy, medium minus acidity keeps this fresh and rides a wave building from the mid-palate towards the cleansing medium lingering finish.

    Deserving of praise.

Some NZ Pinot Noir characteristics, earthy, fleshy ripe fruit.
An injustice inflicted on the palate not to let this breathe an hour open in the decanter.

  • Fantastic wine - brooding, long finish with plenty still to give.

  • A densely coloured Pinot, the wine shows its masculine characters on the nose with dense dark cherry and an abundance of savoury herbs.

The wine has lots of complexity on the palate with youthful red cherry wrapped up in tight grained coffee oak, the tannins are dusty and the wine finishes with dark berries and attractive sappy stem characters.

This wine is in need of; and will reward time in the cellar.

By Farr / Farr Rising continues to be one of Australia's great Pinot producers.

  • Lots of fruit, quite sweet, very youthful. Rather like a Savigny-les-Beaunes at this stage. Too early, but wanted to see what it was like.

  • Nose of fresh dirt, with hints of cherry juice and carbon powder. On the palate, crushed black cherries with star anise and lemon juice. Good structure, with dusty tannins and a (very) strong acid finish.

  • Tasted among many of the flagship pinots from Australia and New Zealand. The New Zealand wines tended to be fuller-bodied, heavier and darker fruit than the Australian examples. This one had a bit of a funky taste, quite high acidity/sourness with hints of Asian preserved mustard. 93+

  • Premium Pinot Noir Releases (Prince Wine Store - Bank Street): Everyone's been raving about the 2010 By Farr and I can see why. This is a very complex and delicate vintage that leans heavily on it's mineral elements which provide a fantastic nose of crushed rock, supporting a mixture of earthy briar and pickling spices. The palette has a dark core of minerals and stewed plums with more of the dark cherry goodness. This is an excellent Pinot and worth every cent. I think this is going to age well, but I don't know if I could hold off drinking this right now.
