My first time trying Souris, and hadn't had any in youth. This wine seems to speak of the vintage, which was a cold and classic Willamette Valley vintage when speaking with Marcus.
Slightly muted nose, but after a couple hours of air it opens up with some notes of dried blackberry, black cherry, wet Autumn leaves, and saddle leather. These notes are carried on the palate as well, along with a bit of black pepper and some smoke (almost Cote Rotie-like) on the mid-palate and finish which is enjoyable as well. Great acid structure and supple tannins.

From memory. Soft tannins, high toned red fruit and black cherry, balanced with acid from start to finish. Really good spice but couldn't help wondering if some of the spice was alcohol. Paired with baked salmon and went perfect. Great work Marcus. Fantastic wine.

A beautifully balanced Pinot from a classic Willamette Valley growing season. This wine possesses many of the qualities I seek in Pinot Noir from this AVA, including dried cherry fruit, earth, and a nice mineral flash on the the finish. No need to wait to yank the cork on this beautiful red.

The unanimous WOTN among an impressive lineup of big name WV pinots. Nose of cherry and earth give way to a wonderfully integrated finish of cherry, mushroom and nutmeg. Not a bit of oak or extraction here - just pure, lithe, cooler year WV fruit supported by good acid and fine tannins. Bravo Marcus!

Dinner Party Blind Tasting - I should have read the comments before opening this. The wine didn't show well at the start. It was thin and just didn't have much flavor. I wondered if I had a bad bottle or if it was in a dumb phase. Later in the night I went back to it as did others. One person wondered if it was the same wine. It opened up and revealed itself to be a really nice wine.

Bright cherry nose dominated the first hour. Good balance, especially after 3 hours in the decanter. Dark fruit and spice came through after that. Will be better in two years. Potential for 91-92.

Showing really well. Still bright and forward but with some grippy tannins showing through. Drink now if you must but decant for at least an hour. Patience will be rewarded.

IPNC Walk-Around tasting; 7/26/2013-7/27/2013 (McMinnville OR): Tasting. Elegantly styled Pinot Noir red fruit that balanced ripe fruit, Asian five spice, new oak hints well. Flavors of both red and black fruit also some some restraint balanced by acidity, similar spice profile, all in good balance. Slightly firm middle to finish, better in a few years. Very good.

Big, bold, tannic, wonderful! My first exposure to Matello's Souris was the 2009 vintage, which I found to be on par with the high-end offerings from the bigger names that were often twice the price. The 2010 version only strengthens that notion. This lovely offering needs a while in the bottle to fully reach its potential, but it's already amazingly complex on the palette yet with a soft, almost sweet finish. Leaving the corks in these suckers until 2020 will be a challenge, but you'll be sitting on something special if you manage...

Color is a somewhat translucent dark color, more black than red, which is not indicative of the flavor. Aromas are very high toned and intense; the stuff is jumping out of the glass. Dark cherries, baking spices, a touch of resin, a little grapefruit, and a soil note but not one that is about wet earth or funk. This wine is so pure, light and intense at the same time that it plays tricks on your head. I cannot recall smelling fruit so fresh, bright and intense. The acid is full and linear and the tannins are there but not overwhelmingly so. There is a bit of astringency on the finish that will likely fade over time; I drank this wine way too early but it is right where it ought to be. I drank along side a Westrey 2010 Abbey Ridge. That wine is great, too, but it came off as softer, more voluptuous and slightly oaky (it still has years to go and shed some of that). This wine was more precise and dialed in with more bright fruit intensity. A real accomplishment that will only get better.
