My first bottle of the 1995 was 5 years ago and it was marvelous. This, however, upon opening was tired and thin and appeared to be very oxidized. Not much at all on the palate even after an hour. Replaced cork and put in fridge. Tried it again the next day and what a difference. Thinness was replaced with an earthy complexity and hint of oxidation that tantalized the palate and finish. I suggest decanting this wine for a few hours before drinking. I also do not know how much time this wine has left, so I would drink it over the next year or two.

Too much snow, too much work, I needed a wine to shake things up and this was a prime candidate. Sui generis to a fault--this is almost impossible to rein into a tidy note. Color, of course, should be easy--a brilliantly clear reddish gold. Still this is unfined so I expected some cloudiness; but no. I also expected some sign of age in a thirteen year old white, again no. Nor was the nose in a compliant mood. Sure there was some citrus--lemon and orange--but mostly there was an earthly melange of mushrooms, white tea and poop. Thankfully, the palate was willing to conform, at least on the attack, which was a fresh and cleansing limony (insert 7up TM here) blast. Yet then in rolls the yeast, the lift and a tangy spritz supporting a medium body that refuses to coat, but rather carves pathways through your mouth to a longish finish and expectations are once more thrown for a loop. It takes you where it wants, how it wants. Shook up? Oh, yes.
Few asides: it is much more alive as it warms in the glass; nice with mild fish and lemon, but best contemplated on its own; I'm not sure what I would guess if my first experience with this was blind in a dark glass. All in all a fun wine.

A weekend of Jacky Truchot; 1/28/2006-1/29/2006 (Washington DC): Explosive nose with olives, clove, orange peel, herbal tea. Definite spritz and alive body. Moderate acids, gelatin, spice and lime rickey elements. Good finish with solid body. Idiosyncratic and full of character. Greatly enjoyable and delicious with a snack of tuna tataki.

Not up to previous bottle. Cloudy light yellow hue and a bit of oxidation. Perhaps an off bottle or is the wine going into decline?

Much better than previous bottle. Great balance and purity. The wine showed no signs of decline.

Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vertical (Joe & Magda's, NYC): Dark gold color. Smokey melon nose. Somewhat muted up front but the finish is expansive and exciting. A wow wine!

Cloudy gold. Popcorn and citrus on the nose. Smells rich – dry and pleasant finish. Interesting if not terribly long. (88)
