Okay. Past it's prime with raisin and prune. A bit disjointed and angular and out of balance with fruit absent. What do you expect from a 40+ year old wine? You roll the dice and hope for the best.

Dinner at Colicchio & Sons (NYC): Lightly bricked deep blood (wow, dark). Wet concrete, strawberry jam; pruney raisin; some oxidation. Palate disjointed, very tannic, wispy fruit tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door. A little flaccid. Bone-dry, tannic finish. OK with dinner, but way past its best (though for one of the group it was WOTN -- go figure).

Good wines and good times with a visiting Mark Lipton. (Il Corso): Classic old California Cabernet nose of desiccated red fruit, earth, leather and brown root spices. It's mature, but still retains a good core of cherry fruit and for most of the evening retains a pleasant freshness and vibrancy. Earth, herb, cedar and sassafras flavors complete the package, though after a couple of hours of being open they start to take over the wine. Quite a lovely showing. A-.

Il Corso jeeb for Mark Lipton (Il Corso, NYC): Still pretty youthful, with a core of fresh red and dark fruited flavours framed by developed earthy, herbal and cedary elements. At peak now (though starting to fall away with a couple of hours of air); tannins resolved but the fruit still kept fresh and vibrant by the acids; beautifully balanced and offering lots of pleasure.
