Still deep purple with a slim orange rim. Attractive fruity nose with loads of blackberries, black currants, ethereal pine needles, sweet vanilla and a hint of black tea. Very smooth on the palate, everything is round and full, flavors as well as body. The tannins lost a bit of grip but the acidity provides a (just) sufficient skeleton for the strong extraction and oak sweetness. Very complex and long.

Stunning, 6 years since our last bottle have smoothed this out, and this was simply amazing, my perception of aging high-end Malbecs is the pronounced, sharp graphite notes (which are attractive when young as well in my opinion) seem to smooth out and a general silky feeling comes over the glass, this was frankly really, really tasty, and an amazing partner with the rich steak with Kobe marinade my wife put together, awesome, not sure if there is any reason to hold further, doesn't appear to be close to decline, but not sure what more it could offer with more bottle age - Black, full bodied with a nose of plum, blueberry, blackfruit, graphite and vanilla, well integrated, deliciously sweet, silky smooth on the palate with amazing length, spectacular and wish we had more!! (95 Points).

Bursting ripe, mostly red, fruit tempts the nose upon opening the bottle. Deep and muted dark purple color, like the fringe of a rainstorm retreating into the sunset. Cassis, some dark berries, pipe tobacco and toasted spice on the palate. Nice finish. Perhaps not as big as other marquis Malbecs, but still plenty of horsepower and good QPR.

The 2007 Fausto Orellana Malbec has integrated beautifully over the past years and delivers nicely tonight. The nose displays tons of red fruit, like red currant and cranberry(!), but there is also a subtle tone of led pencil, white pepper and classy crème de cassis. Oak exposure appears to be gentle or it has just integrated. The palate is superbly balanced with end-palate tannins being the number one component tonight. Fruit and acidity of course speak up too and very well-behaved. The length on the finish lasts some 40-45 seconds. This effort will continue to develop for a many more years to come. A lovely wine for sure!

A truly powerful and lovely Malbec, the 2007 Vina Fausto Orellana provides a nose full of clean cool drupe combined with wet granite and balanced oak. The palate provides a nice experience with balance and an integration which is much evolved compared to the last tasting. Tannins are a bit expressive, but they pair nicely to the other components of the wine and they feel just right tonight. This effort represents skillful winemaking and it drinks perfectly tonight with some grilled chicken and a lovely acidic sauce béarnaise. I am confident this wine will keep on developing if given the opportunity.

Paired this side by side with the 2007 Trapiche Single Vineyard Domingo F. Sarmiento. This wine, with the older vines, had much more depth, tannin and tertiary aspects than the Sarmiento. Smoke, loganberrry and cherry pipe tobacco on the nose. Nice buttery finish and good strong tannins on the palate.

A bit disjointed tonight, but still a powerful and well-made effort, the 2007 Vina Fausto Orellana provides a nose full of clean cool fruit combined with wet stone and somewhat misbehaving oak. The palate also provides a nice experience, but here to the oak from time to time takes a too strong grip. Tannins are quite equivoque and they will need considerable time to mellow. I am not sure why this wine behaves in this quite "teenager" like way, but it certainly does tonight. I see no reason not to pop a bottle if given the opportunity, after all we are talking about skillful winemaking. For sure the wine will keep on developing if given the opportunity.

Strong, powerful and expressive nose suggesting heavy oak. Tobacco leaf, vanilla, herbs, black and purple fruits all fill the nose. It's heavy and liquer-esque. Lingonberry flavors up front on the palate. Very dry and earthy with coffee notes, leather, tobacco and sweet oak. Nice wine.

Coming around nicely, the 2007 Fausto Orellana Malbec has integrated beautifully over the past years and truly represents skillful winemaking. The nose displays an array of red fruit, including red currant but there is also a soft pleasant tone of led pencil, white pepper and crème de cassis. You certainly feel the elegant exposure to oak, but in a very appealing way. The palate is superbly balanced with the fruit and acidity playing the vibrant tone. Tannins are nicely integrated but they are still present in the back-end palate. Finish lasts some 40-45 seconds. This effort will continue to develop for a few more years to come, but it is certainly worth having a taste if the possibility is provided.

This is s till a great modern example. Fruit driven, some heat, big body and structure galare into the second plus day. Still holding together this should last and get better but irresistible now. I am not getting too much oak, just a wall of fruit, the structure, then fruit. And I don't like the oak monster either. Spectator & Advocate nail this. Great qpr at 30.

Dark and rich. iIce dusty tight rich fruit, not agressive or extracted, sweet and rich. NIce weight, mouthfeel, rich expanding fruit, tight high mid palate, extends to the finish, lots of choco powder w some secondary flavors coming out, beauty of a wine at this price. Some heat and dry oak now, tight tannins an hour into the bottle, dregs of glass one. Day II. Bit of a chemical nose w same sweet black fruit nose. Same palate as last night, everything a bit brighter, heat is gone, some more sour fruit on the finish, metallic, then herbashish.

Dark brooding bottle of wine. This benefits from aeration and serving properly cooled down. The balance in the wine is impeccable and best on day 3. While dark tones from the work at the cellar prevail, it still has nice acidity to keep the wine vibrant. I think this is going to age well.

This is the ultimate when it comes to staining your lips, dark red, almost black guaranteed! The nose is very good indeed, giving much, blue fruits, fresh. Such an excellent balance on the palate. Acids, tannins and alcohol (no heat) and the structure support each other so nice. Reminds of the Catena Alta 2006, approachable now but surely will be last for years. This is not as concentrated as some of the single wineyeard Catena's but currently it is just a merit. Consistent on day 2, perhaps little heavier and the oak more pronounced. Just under 30e in Finland. Stock-up.

This is a style of wine which was inevitably designed for barbeque and how lovely it is! The colour is almost opaque, the nose at first almost reluctantly hesitating behind a veil of sour cherries, red currants and a subtle grassy tone. After some hours of aeration it opens up and boasts out in an elegant but still massive array of fruit and oak. The acidity is very appealing, and in combination with the massive tannins the wine turns into a superb effort. However very young and still a bit disintegrated, I suggest a few more years in the cellar will make the 2007 La Consulta a true beauty.

This is one of thier single vineyard selection of site specific, sourced grapes. This one was been selected in 2005 and 2007.
Closed up on the nose, but then again its Malbec, its 18 months in French oak, 100% new. Its full, its rich, its also somewhat of a donnut and maybe its just need a bit of time to stretch out.
65 year old vineyard. The characteristic of this area is to be spicy, and you taste that. Or at least I taste that.
Ok, I actually am not liking this all that much. Maybe its just needing time to decompress.

Interesting, what I'm starting to figure out is how close in flavour profile really good Malbecs are to Ribera Tempranillo, this was no exception and was quite tasty - Black, full bodied with a nose of plum, blueberry, blackfruit, graphite, minerals and vanilla, good balance, interesting, sweet, somewhat tannic on the palate with good length, quite good (90 Points).

Importer tasting (@ PA): A mouth full of concentrated wine. This is the most beautiful and elegant of the three Single Vineyards I have tasted of Trapiche. Black as well as red berry fruits, well dosed luxurious oak, good spiciness. Beautiful balance between acidity, tannin, bitterness and a little sweetness. The least outspoken at the moment. Needs another 3+ years of ageing and can last several years longer.

A big, modern, oak-driven style with layers of sweet, caramel and vanilla scented oak riding over the black fruit flavors. Sweet, a velvety full bodied wine that many will adore, but I find just shows too much oak, all the way through to its espresso laced finish.

Regular dinner group (@ PvD Viognier worldwide and reds from the Southern Hemisphere): Expressive bouquet with a lot of herbs and spices, e.g. clove and laurel and black fruits. Also a lot of ripe black fruits on the palate. New oak. A lot of sweetness in this concentrated wine. Long finish. Complex. Typically a New World wine, but certainly an excellent one. 92+

Medium ruby with significant fading at the rim
Austere. Oak dominant. Tertiary notes beginning. Other Malbecs are more elegant, this is more in the meat / sweat aromatics.
Tannins are quite chalky with powerful acidity that fades quickly leaving an overwhelming presence of alcohol on the finish.
Flavours of Sweat, earth, milk chocolate. Mint. Good length
Past peak. Drink up.

Trapiche dinner at Motti,Helsinki. Vibrant nose with dark fruit, roasted notes, vanilla. Big and powerful palate delivering dark fruit, spices, liquorice, vanilla with vibrant tannins and heat on the finish. Paired nicely with deer.

Dinner at Holly and Tony's (Wilmington, Delaware): Funky earthy nose. Tart cherry, mint and fine tannins. Young but pretty good.

Classic, elegant malbec that will pair well with most meats. Decant an hour before serving. Short-term cellaring potential...
