Popped and poured at dinner at home. Dark garnet color. Faint nose of cherry and strawberry. Thin legs. Medium body. Not complex, even hollow flavors of dark cherry and blackberry. Astringent sour notes on finish.

Can't remember what the last bottle was like - but I sure enjoyed this one. Nice balance to the fruits and acidity, with soft tannins and light to medium body. At least to my palate. Interesting and tasty. I'd buy more at this price for sure.

Deep red color. Aromas of red cherries, licorice and spices. Ripe, medium-bodied fruit in the mouth with good depth and length and well-integrated tannins. Not very complex but delicious with grilled meats and an excellent value.

My last bottle of a case. A full two points more than two years ago for the first bottle. As I thought, it improved with the years, and this last bottle was wonderful, with the finish being fuller and longer than when younger, and overall showing a lot of harmony and integration of flavors. Not a challenging wine, but a delicious one.

Sweet cranberries, strawberries, and white chalk find their balance with high toned acidity. This is fruity and tasty, coming across as an imaginary blend of Cru Beaujolais and unoaked Spanish Grenache. At $8~9, it is an amazing value.

Enjoyable. On first taste, a little soft on the backend, but well balanced and interesting on the front end. Maybe not a classic pairing, but didn't diminish with a grilled skirt steak or the tomato-heavy ratatouille we had for dinner. I'd definitely buy more at this price.

(14%) 100% Vranec - This one leans toward a new world style. Smooth with dark red fruits. Zinfandel like (on the food friendlier side of the spectrum) Decent but doesn’t deliver on interesting giving Vranec and Macedonia. Nice enough at $10.

So dark it almost stains the glass. Starts with strong blackcurrant flavor, settles into a meaty mid-palate and finishes with notes of spice and strawberry. Great first impression of Macedonian wine.

Man, the "dark/blood" comments are not kidding. It really does look like Dracula's glass over here, and this would be perfect for a Halloween or "True Blood" party. Nose of soil, eucalyptus (others mention herbs and medicinal, but this is that note I think we're all referring to), plum, and black cherry. There's a definite dustiness as well, and I echo the Rutherford Cab. comment. There was a hint of confectioned fruit on the pop, but thankfully this evolved. Medium bodied with bright acidity, medium+ finish, and plum and black cherry notes carrying through on the palate. Slightly chalky tannins. Paired well with spicy sriracha/orange marinated chicken, but generally robust red sauces and fare should work well. I was recommended a burger pairing with this, which I think would also work well.

The nose showed rich dark fruit, herbal tones, ginger cookie and a hint of barnyard funk. On the palate it was rich with a medium body, showing ripe red and blue fruits with an medicinal-herbal quality. The fruit coated the palate with a massive amount of dry extract, yet remained fresh throughout.

Popped and poured. The aroma is appetizing, with an attractive savory mineral earthiness, big blueberry, black pepper, and herbaceous brush. When first opened it flirts with pruniness and has a touch of heat, but these issues resolve themselves rapidly. On the palate, acidity makes everything come together. Ripe cherry, blueberry, brush, black pepper, and gravelly earth, completely dry, assertive but smooth tannins, and really nice acidity. On the big side for me when it comes down to brass tacks, but seems perfectly crafted given the raw material, which is not without its charms. I'm enjoying this. Nice wine, and a great value.

Dark fruit and florals on the nose. The palate is jammy but not over the top with dark fruit, a bit of pepper/spice and earth. Medium tannins and a surprisingly long acidity-driven finish. Well worth a try for the price; overall I would say drink in the short term but this may surprise with age given the acidic structure.

At $9 a very good QPR. Big, fun, rustic. It is a New World style wine (inky, highly extracted, 14%, soft tannins) except that it lacks that bit of residual sweetness that many modern wines have. For that reason the finish is a bit disappointing, a bit too dry. Maybe with some age it will be a bit more savory. I have quite a few more bottles, so will will try over time.

- Brick color with medium forming legs and aromas of prune, fig, cloves and tobacco. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of black currant, raisin, chocolate, molasses and licorice anise with a medium/full body. Round texture with a medium finish - Color is actually darker than brick - almost like India Ink. Very chewy texture. Much sweeter than the Alcohol percent (14%) would indicate. Strikes me as being an archaic peasant style wine. Really needs some hearty food to accompany it.

The nose showed rich blackberry, purple florals, pepper and an odd note of seasoned breadcrumbs. On the palate it was medium bodied with crunchy tannins, dark berry fruits and a hint of spice. The finish displayed a note of blackberry jam that saturated the senses and lingered through the wine's long close.
I didn't mind this wine as much as many of the previous tasters. It was decanted for one hour before the note was written and was very tight at first but opened up nicely in the glass. There isn't much depth here but you get what you pay for and I'm sure this would be a pleaser at a party.

Giant Wine Sale & Tasting Cellar on Greene 1/26/2013 (Cellar on Greene, Columbia, SC): I've seen this sitting on the retailers shelf for the past few months wondering what it tastes like. It is definitely a unique experience. The nose is not giving up much. The color is inky, purple teeth black. The immediate impression on tasting is big tannins. This is not a fruit forward wine as at least 60% of the flavor profile is from non fruit flavors all over the park like green tea, coffee bean, vanilla, wet earth and mushroom. The fruit is dark and brooding like oxidized blackberry if that is possible. I'm sure a decant, a vinturi, or lots of swirling would help things open up. Not a bad wine just very different.

First had this at Postino East in Gilbert, AZ. Some people seem to say Vranec is like Zinfandel, but I think it's a little more like Tempranillo. I thought this was surprisingly good - a no-name grape from a no-name region, made by hotshot consulting winemaker and Jabba the Hutt body double Philippe Cambie. Shockingly deep crimson in the glass, would make an excellent beverage for a True Blood party. Better on the nose than the palate, where assertive tannins detract from an otherwise food-friendly wine. On the nose, lots of dusty notes reminiscent of a Cali cab from Rutherford, but more playful, almost Gamay-like in the mouth. Annoying elongated bottle with a thick, dribble-inducing lip, but interesting and quite good value at around $10.

Jammy and forward with red, briary fruit but balanced by a dirty earthiness and spiced acidity. That last through the mid-palate before delivering a spiced barrel finish with thick tannins. Be sure to pair this one with a meal. I’d describe this one as Rhon-ish in style. A nice balance of older and newer world style here. At $10 an interesting wine with personality and doubly so for those wine adventurers out there.
