Pale color, and overall on the light, elegant side of reds (Burgundian, one could say). Complex, interesting nose, a bit of barnyard, going towards tertiary but still with fruit. Wonderful palate: just wonderfully balanced, with good presence and the complexity and smoothness which come with age. The most elegant of the evening and was winning on that.

This was a bit boring when younger and still very one dimensional with age. Perfectly fine and drinkable but this particular wine was not worthy of the hype or the price tag. Also has a tiny bit of mousiness.

Dark, layered wine with earthy, mineral tones. Like a number of Occhipinti wines pushes the boundaries a bit and seems like it may tip over into a VA-laden territory but manages to walk that edge well. Large -scaled but with a feminine sensibility. Floral. Bright, firm finish. Very nice.

Followed over three days. Spicy, complex, earthy nose. A touch of greenness (stems? or is it just the Nero d'Avola?), but far from unpleasant. It evolved nicely over three days becoming more quiet - on the last day it reminded me of Nebbiolo. Juicy and very fresh on the palate. Extremely lively, with bright acidity. Blood oranges and very earthy too. Mineral, saline finish. Excellent. ***(*)

An interesting step up from the standard fresh-'n'-fruity Sicilian red. Translucent ruby. Definitely shows typicity, with bitter cherry fruit, licorice, good acid, and very little tannin. A little burnt note contributes complexity. Maybe a note of varnish/VA there as well. What distinguishes this wine is its impressive concentration and intensity for a fairly modest extraction level. It's not an ethereal Burgundy, as a prior taster noted, but I strongly disagree that this is anywhere close to "motor oil"--it could pair perfectly with a meaty fish like salmon or swordfish.

I always wanted to drink motor oil at dinner.... jeez, this is thick, dense, viscous, black hole stuff. Not to say that it does not have a delicious, sappy fruit core, which it does, but it has a thicker mouthfeel than a Burgundy lover desires or appreciates, and too much sweetness and oak. The score reflects the inner quality of this wine, not how much I enjoyed it. If you savor 10W40 with your pasta, grab this!

A Good Tuesday, Vol. VII: Italians: B Mascarello, E Pepe, Occhipinti, Burlotto, Barisone, Molettieri...: In a real good spot. Nose almost shows stem/herbal notes that are interesting. Polished. Light touch, almost Burgundian. Pretty wine, if that makes sense.
