Meh. This just underwhelmed. I get that 2011 was not the best vintage, but the great makers find ways to keep the flagship great in more challenging years. In a good lineup at a celebration dinner, the Quintessa stumbled - nobody disliked it, but no one was reaching for an extra pour. I’ve cellared this bottle in optimal conditions but was hoping for better.

Honestly, was expecting more fruit and body that aligned with more of what you would expect from Napa. Pleasantly surprised at how restrained and elegant this was. This is drinking wonderfully right now. Red cherry, plum, currant, spice, slight hint of oak.

Cork in good condition, aromas of black and purple fruit: cassis, blueberry pie, figs, plums with notes of mocha, anise and tar. Palate is a bit jammy but balanced with still present tannic backbone although quite mellow with flavors of currants, plums, blueberries interlaced with cola and chocolate. Delicious and no reason to wait any longer.

Epic Napa Trip - Day 6: Tasted at Quintessa - I was surprised by this one! Tasted pretty darn good for a 2011! Similar profile to other Quintessa wines (red and dark fruit, tobacco, some anise, chocolate, bramble and oak), but slightly thinner. Still a very good wine I would happily drink! A solid 93 for my palate, and certainly drinking quite well now.

Napa trip day 6: Drank a glass over 45 minutes at the winery's tasting facility. Lean and savory. This had better balance than the 2014 and 2015, but still managed to be a touch cloying at times.

No formal notes, generally an enjoyable bottle for my old school palate, rich but not over the top. A very lengthy decant eventually smoothed a slight bitterness.

Still one of my all-time favorite Red blends. It is a full bodied blend that finishes strong. Although 2011 wasn’t Quintessa’s best year, it is drinking well now and I’m looking forward to the next three bottles in my cellar!

Wonderful concentration for a leaner vintage and has a great long life ahead of it. Nice power, but balanced and the grilled herbs, savory notes, dried flowers and minerality are great layers over this dark fruit.

Opened two hours before drinking, but no formal decant. Very deep, dark purplish magenta color. Prune, unripe tomato, Christmas tinsel, arugula, and milk-soaked graham cracker on the complex nose. Strong acidity on the super smooth, mouth drying palate. Soft, firm tannins on the medium finish.
The finish was too short for such an expensive wine, but overall this was very integrated. I’m drinking up all my ‘11 Napa wines this year. I think they are already peaking (or peaked six months ago).

Tough year for Quintessa based on some reviews I see. Floral notes on the nose, a bit of Rutherford dust and earth, chalky. Decided to open for my birthday and drank over a few nights- for the price, probably not a great QPR but this one was just for fun (and celebrations)!
Update: Last glass threw a ton of sediment. This had been stored for a year on its side. If drinking now, I would stand up for a day and decant.

Napa September 2017; 9/9/2017-9/11/2017 (Napa, CA): 2011 was just a tough vintage, I've only been surprised by a couple of 2011s, the rest have had more pyrazines and a lack of fruit and this wine was no different. On the plus side, the acid, the leaness and fine tannins are there but the flavor profile just wasn't what I was looking for.

I've been hesitant to open any Napa 2011 vintages aside from mountain fruit. We opened a bottle tonight and it was exceptional - it will make me accelerate the drinking of the rest of our bottles from that year. The tannins were smooth, but still fruit forward, bold, and filled with character. My biggest concern is that the cork was unlike any I've ever experienced - soaked to at least 85%. Concerns me a bit to allow my other bottles (bought straight from the winery) to age too much longer.

90 min decant. Everything continued to improve over the next hour of drinking. Perfume/floral notes and gentle earth on nose. Elegant, smooth palate with good acidity/tannin balance. Very long finish, which is the hallmark of a top notch wine. This is terrific, but didn't completely knock my socks off. Tasted better at the winery.

Tasting at the winery. Vegetal nose typical of the 2011's. Texture and mouthfeel were good but a vegetal finish. This did improve with air. Because of the vintage this is not close to being worth the money but not a bad job for such a tough vintage.

A neighbor brought this over for the NFL playoffs. I've had a number of different vintages of Quintessa and I've always been impressed with the quality of fruit. However, if drinking blind I would never bet that this was Quintessa. Underwhelming for the price point - a reflection of the difficult vintage. Dark red and black fruit - dark cherry, currants, and blackberry. Fairly smooth mid-palate with decent depth (medium body) but not real flavorful and a little tart. Also, fairly rich. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep. Decanted for a couple hours and drank over another three. Improved a little with time. 94% cab, 4% merlot, 1% cab franc, and 1% petit verdot. Drank next to a couple higher-end cabs from Carter and Myriad and this really paled in comparison to those wines.
Aroma was mostly vegetal with some dark fruits and on the palette was the same. Herbs and green vegetables dominated the palette. Highly concentrated with a long finish of oak and vanilla. Did not enjoy. Very poor QPR.

Surprised on others notes. This wine has nice nose and varied beautiful notes. For an 11, surprisingly looks to cellar nicely for a few more years. Actually get some sweet notes with tannic beginnings. Wine's finish is long and strong. Still loving it

LP, Rhys, Chapoutier, Caymus, Quintessa, Lewis & Kracher (E. 4th street): This si a solid wine, but probably not up to typical Quintessa standards. It was a tough vintage for many. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is nice with cassis, cherries, roasted herbs and spice. On the palate, full bodied with good cherry fruit. Some charred wood and licorice too. It doesn't have that third gear but what is there is very nice. There are some tannins. I am not sure how well these 11's will age. I know that 98 and 00 have aged very well IMO so time will tell I guess. No harm in drinking now though as it is an excellent wine.

Not too big but nice fruit with some nice mint and herbal notes. Tried twice.

Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): From 375mL; dark core, opaque, dull reddish violet rim; deep black and red currant, green pepper, anise, pain grille, ripe plum, nose is reminiscent of a modern Bordeaux; high toned on the palate, nice grip and acid, tart fruit, some menthol, smoke, scrub brushy, iron note; good, seems a bit fresher and higher toned due to vintage.

2011 Quintessa Red Blend | Full bodied red with ruby hue. Tannins perfectly compliment body and help provide structure to an extremely smooth drink | Nose of plums, tobacco, spice, and other darker fruits I couldn't place | Dark fruits and spice fill the palate, but the unique hint of black olive rounds out the flavor | Overall, this is one of the boldest, yet smoothest wines I think you could enjoy from the region. We decanted it for an hour. It's certainly a treat any time you can enjoy a wine from @quintessawinery. Price be damned.
