Brought to drink at Oinoscent during service The bottle was decanted at 18:50, tasted at 19:20 The wine shows pale hazy red cherry color In the nose, the wine shows fully developed profile, dried red cherry, red currant, sous bois, earthy, dried herbs, cigar box, sweet spices, cinnamon, bacon/cured meat after a bit of time. In the palate, the wine looks fully developed, coffee, chocolate notes, sweet spices, dried red cherries, lean body, a touch hot, dissolved tannins, a few dried herbs, medium finish It seems that decanting its not really needed. I don't think it would benefit from further ageing.

Eastman. Coming into its drinking window. Nose especially expressive with fruit and some violet. Good dollop of tannin remains. Enjoyed with duck leg confit and duck breast in a tart cherry sauce. I'll save my last one for another 2-3 years.

Opened at home in HK as an antidote to 2 weeks of Aussie pinots and chards down under. Consistent with previous TN, very fine and balanced, a pleasure to drink.

Terrific, rich bouquet of the classic N Rhone school. Dried plum, mineral gravel, game, medicinal root notes abound. Medium to full bodied, with a tinge of viscosity that gives it a certain velvety roundness in the finish. I am fully with RP on this one, excellent wine and excellent value

92 pts

Deep, saturated garnet color. Strong oak scents mix with inky red and black fruits. Powerful juice yet shows some complexity and there is a nice mineral element. A chunky, meaty wine. Round, full and really drinking well right now. This bottling has gotten much better recently IMO. This 04 shows too heavy a hand for my taste - I have not gotten this as much recently. Still for a wine that has this much dressing, it is a good drink. (90)

Ready to go and firing strong. A lush texture that frankly shows a lot of oak (a bit too much) supports dark fruit and a long finish. Clearly high quality but a little over manipulated in my mind. The La La’s can handle it – don’t know if this vineyard can. (91)

92 pts

2004 produced an almost Burgundian version of this wine. Elegant, restrained, but so well made. In a vertical of this wine with th 2005, this wine stood out because of its elegance and approachability. Where the 2005 was big, bold and in your face. The 2005 will be a terrific wine in 10 years, but for dinners that I am having now, the 2004 is the choice. L'Hospice is a very interesting vineyard. Always one of my favorites..
To quote the importer: This wine originates from two steeply terraced vineyards which Guigal now owns or controls through the purchase of the De Vallouit and Grippat domaines. “Vignes de L’Hospices” is a tiny, steep vineyard perched high above the town of Tournon in perhaps the best part of the St. Joseph appellation. It is owned by the local Hospice, and the vines are leased to Guigal on a long-term basis. To this cuvée is added part of the production of the vineyard “Les Anges” (the Angels), which previously had belonged to the de Vallouit domaine. This vineyard is located above the Hospices, rising nearly to the top of the extraordinarily steep slope above the town. Together with the Lieu Dit Le St. Joseph, these are arguably the finest vineyards in the AC.
In recognition of the quality of these vineyards, Guigal vinifies this 100% Syrah wine in the same fashion as his Cru Côte Rôties. After fermentation, it is aged for 30 months in 100% new barrels, clarified by racking only, and bottled unfiltered. Production is quite limited. Although Guigal’s first vintage of this wine was 1999 (the first entirely vinified by him was 2001), this wine has already set a new quality standard for St. Joseph

WineFanatic Northern Rhone Offline (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind – Wow, this is different. Dark, ripe and over oaked. Very creamy nose of vanilla and ripe sweet cherries that one taster noted was reminiscent of an Aussie shiraz/viognier blend. More of the same on the palate with gobs of oak and rich sweet fruit. Not what I expected when the wine was revealed. Definitely not my cup of tea. Average.

Dark and concentrated. Exotic nose. Ripe and concentrated, wood in evidence. Everyone else at the table loved it and I rather liked it even though it seemed more Australian than northern Rhone. The richness was really a nice match for roasted duck breast. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

This wine had brilliant flavor of blackberries, with a mocha chalkiness, and still, I got a fragrant, herbal quality. This is an outstanding wine that will only get better.

91-93 pts

Clearly too young. Also weaker than the 2003.....who's surprised? Massive but still unfinished. Creme de cassis, spices, smoky notes. Lots of coffee on the palate.
