Burgundy 2012 against German-speaking competitors: N: this was also quite reserved, but was more on herbs and mineral notes. On the palate it seemed light compared to the other two, almost simple. But it showed a lovely structure withe very fine tannins. Day 2: N: cherries and blackberries, earthy and elegant, with broth and balsamic notes. On the palate it is straight and narrow, almost austere - not lively. Finish is slightly salty. It has substance and power, but is austere.

Upon opening this was a bit tight on the nose and palate. Nose remained somewhat restrained but showed game, forest and spice. The palate really rounded out over the evening and went from being somewhat tight and perhaps even astringent to a very lovely wine of depth and sweet (in a good way) fruit. Powerful, but lovely balance. Only going up from here - probably best from 2025 on.

Domaine Michel Lafarge Vertical Tasting (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): Rich, round and sweet notes on the thickly fruited nose. Still, showing a ton of elegance and depth on the nose. Much more powerful and deep than the 2014 or 2013 on the nose. Gorgeous palate entry, showing very nice balance. Lovely integrated of fruit and structure here too. Very pretty stuff. Killer dial up and pretty integration of fruit and all structural components on the finish, as well. Very intense and interesting.

I really like this one. It’s both smooth and astringent in the most unique way. Subdued fruits, a little tight at first, but definitely opens up.
