  • Pop and pour. Medium deep garnet color. Reluctant nose with some cherry tones. Sour, I mean really sour, cherry flavor is primary. Feeling like this thing packs a punch, I look and find it's 16% alcohol! A couple of hours later the cherry isn't quite as sour (but sour is still the predominant character), there's alcoholic heat and a lingering finish of oak. This was on sale today at the local wine shop and they had one more left -- I don't plan on going back to get it.

  • RED BROWN ON THE EDGE. BLACKBERRIES, BLUEBERRIES, AND RASPBERRIES IN THE NOSE AND FLAVOR. NICE LEGS AND A MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH.

  • Pretty much all Turley are special, but this one had something about it that you just wanted to savior. Real smokiness, wonderful blackberry, cherry and leather. Incredible balance of acidity and tannins. I wish I had more!

  • Definitely showing a little age, this was a decent wine that, despite the source fruit, bears little resemblance to the Martinelli Jackass Zins. Much more rustic in style, with more brambly, chunky fruit and a definite Zinfandel character, this was a solid wine. (PE: 86)

  • This was very nice and tasty. I enjoyed how complete the flavor profile was- smooth and well integrated.

  • Still big and brash, black raspberries, pepper and bramble. Old school Turley from one of my favorite vintages.

  • Way better than my last bottle two years ago. This was a classic Turley, with a nose of underbrush, pepper, sage, and smoky raspberry. Beautifully balanced on the palate, with raspberry, strawberry, pepper, and grilled bread. Everything working in harmony. Well done.

  • Consumed over 4 hours - needed full time to open up. Berry up front, opens to cacophony of fruit. Controlled, balanced, smooth, consistent nose vs. taste. No velvet, not even peach. Nice finish but not extraordinary.

  • Absolutely delightful. Again with lamb kaboob, green and red pepper & onion. Enough bite to handle it all yet very smooth on the finish. Very fruit forward with Raspberry taking the lead.

  • Tight, not much fruit, not very distinctive, maybe some pepper..but w/o mouth feel and fruit, this was pretty disappointing. At this point I have given up my allocation for more reliable fruit from Biale, Amador County, and others in the dry creek valley and paso robles...

  • Loaded with fruit and perfectly balanced. Smooth and no obtrusive tannin. Long finish. Fantastic.

  • Excellent, very fruit forward raspberry and blueberry was perfect with grilled lamb baboobs, red & green peppers and onion. Medium tannins, medium finish. Consumed over a three hour period and it continued to improve. At least another 2-3 years left.

  • On the nose, an offputting scent of rubber and earth, with some red fruit. On the palate, raspberries, currants, pepper, and more earth with a fair amount of hear. Turned raisen-y as it warmed. Not particularly distinctive, and lacking the Turley "velvet" I've come to know and love.

  • Dark purplish hue and a rather subdued nose that took time to open up showing some tart dark berry and a little spice. The palate at first was a little disjointed, and this really did not begin to open up until a few hours later showing a few more layers of fruit and texture. Simply put...I think this could have used more time in the cellar. It did show elements of a strong personality, but doubtless, it is still waiting to express itself.

  • Really enjoyed this. Great fruit profile - raspberry, blackberry up front, a little heat at first that fades away after 15-30 mins of air. Nice to have a great bottle of Turley again... was starting to get worried with some of the other bottles I've had recently.

  • Deep dark red in the glass and impressive Turley Zin nose. The wine is full of beautiful rasberry fruit. My only complaint is that the voluptuous body and mouthfeel is interrupted by a tannic, tight finish. Maybe better tonight after taking some air.

  • ($40) A beautiful Zin from Turley. This wine is cut more in the mold of a Carlisle Zin. The fruit is ripe and plump without the overzealous acidity I sometimes find in Turley's wines (some may like that acidity, I usually don't past a certain point in a Zinfandel). Black and red berry fruit with a velvety texture. Balanced for its 16% alcohol. Nice.

  • What an outstanding zin, and a newish one from Turley (released in the Spring, I believe). Made from RRV fruit from a vineyard apparently planted in the 1880s. This was the only bottle I was allocated.

Imposing opaque magenta-red. Big nose of crushed raspberries, pepper, a little zin spice. A little tight upon opening, the wine gradually evolved to show deep, penetrating and mouth-filling rapsberry liqueur with spicy/briary notes and a rather high level of acid that drove the already intense flavors to resonate across the palate. Some chewy tannins that softened over time, lengthening out the finish. This wine could easily rest for two years and would likely improve in that time. If I had to assign a score, it'd be 93 or 94 points.

Apparently the fermentation on this wine was very, very slow and took forever, like a year or something, which delayed the release of the wine until this year with the first wave of 2004s. I sincerely hope Turley continues on with Rancho Burro fruit. The red-fruits/raspberry profile and the elevated level of acidity differ dramatically from many of Turley's other releases, making it a welcome member in their diverse portfolio.

  • Deep purple color, with hints of red at the edges. Initially, this was the tightest Turley I've ever had - almost nothing on the nose or the palate. After some air time, however, it started to give up black/blue fruits and definite aromas and tastes of coffee. Lots of acid - much more acid than any Turley I've had - to the point where it was almost unbalanced in the context. Also a lot of spice and structure that reminded me of a Rhone. One taste would start to show something pretty good, and the next would be shut down again. I think this needs at least a year before opening, and if you open now, decant for a couple hours. Score withheld due to my inability to get a solid read.

  • I don't usually expect too much depth or complexity from a zinfandel. I also do not expect that a Zin should be aged much. Well, this Turley is deep and with another year or two in the celler it will be deeper.
