Had my last bottle of the 2000 vintage - fantastic Sangiovese by Giacomo Neri in its perfect drinking window and not at the end of its life. Very smooth, silky tannins balance the acidity very well - delicious fruity notes with some dark chocolate at the long finish. Unfortunately, very hard to get. Stocked up my cellar with 2013 and 2016 vintages - both in their infancy.

Took a few hours to develop. Decanting a must. Heavy sediment. This was a deep, intense, brooding, earthy, musty (in a good way), leathery brunello. Fruit is more background but lingers on the incredibly long finish. Just sublime with prime ribeye in simple herb rub and matsutake sautée. Wow.

No where near the end if its life. This bottle had at least 5 more years in it. Solid color throughout. Took 90 minutes to fully open. Blackberry, black cherry, dried herbs, some forest floor and Oak. Smooth. Finish was a bit short which took it down a point.

Brunello dinner (Osteria del Cardinale, San Quirico d'Orcia): dark opaque red-brown, tertiary aromas, earthy, coffee, leather, sous-bois delicate, very fine, firm tannins, full bodied, powerful, fruity, well balanced, rustic, cherries, good complexity, structured, wine of class, goes well with or without food, lingering finish.

Opened by Indybob. Black red color. An aromatic wine. On the palate I detected an interesting chalkiness. Notes of tar, mocha and blackberry. This wine was right up there for wine of the night. As good as it was though, it fell just short of matching the 1997 which I had 10 years ago. 94 points.

Decanted for 1 hour before drinking. improvd throughout the tasting.
Eye: dark inky reddish purple. Nose: dried fruit, cherries, vanilla, licorice, smoke, tobacco. Palate: great structure, mature oaky palete with good fruit but softening slightly, full body with long complex finish.
After further 1 hour of breathing in decanter, palate actually became more tight with nice tannins, more cherries and vanilla with good structure and crisp taste on the front of the tongue and still long finish.
Still excellent and not showing any signs of losing its life...

I thought I have the priviledge to have tasted a fair variety of good brunellos, this wine producer will set a new standard for Brunello. Heard about it for some time, and I know it is pricey than usual brunellos. Opened the wine for 12 hours prior, little bit apprehensive its aromas may fade, so take a tasting sample every 2 hours just in case. Massive structures. Deep ruby-red concentrate on glass. Massive aromatic nose of fruits, ripe blackcurrants, oaks, smoke, barbeque meats, spices and pepper. Leathery and velvet coats on palate of deep red fruits, balanced overripe currants, sweet cherries, cigar box, oaks, truffles, spices, pepper.....a second mouthful seems again different...tobacco, chocolate, layers of fruits and berries, tannin present but not overwhelming to lock in the structures and present it in the structured manner, long finish with massive explosive fruits triggering down, I wish I have a few more bottles.....I can write forever. This is only 2000. I wonder what 2001 is going to be (WS 100pts), bought the remaining last 2 bottles impulsively, I just have to let go of 2004 Bondi-Santi Brunello Riserva until the next time. Great bottle and cork condition, aerated x 1 hour prior to re bottling and transporting. great full and expressive nose, leather, smoke, dark fruits. Tannins are very prominent, would benefit from more bottle age - darn fruit, smokey cedar and licorice. Again, tannins are gripping my cheeks, detracts a little. Overall this is a great wine this bottle would have improved with age. My wine of the night.

Exceptional, powerful showing great structure and concentration. Took about 1 to almost 2 hours to open optimally.
Color: Youthful dark core, ruby red edges
Nose: Tarry flowers, tobacco, and dark fruits, cherries
Palate: Great mouth feel, tannins prevalent but not overbearing. Chocolate appears on the palate with the cherry, tar and tobacco. A long finish of earth, cherry and leather. Nice acidity.
Could easily go another 10 years no problem.

Cerretalto Vertical Tasting (Restaurant 1.TH (CPH)): A very different nose than the other Cerretaltos tasted before this. Meaty notes is mingled with dark and overripe fruit, mixed with yoghurt and black pepper. Also pretty strange in the mouth which is mainly dark plum fruit that only "affect" to first part of the mouth. A quite messy and unbalanced wine with a quite short length. Clearly the worst of all the Cerretaltos in the vertical.

Dark purple core, no real signs of age. Nose of dried red cherries in a sort of reduction sauce, cassis, coco, and sweet oak. Wonderful scents that kept me smelling much longer than other wines. The palate expresses sour cherries and other dusty red fruit with a firm acidic core on the midpalate. The finish is dusty dry tannins with hints of tobacco. Overall a great wine that with time continued to put on weight. There is an overall plush feel to this wine that I find very appealing. There is certainly a nice use of oak but it does not dominate the palate. If only the acidity had more focus, this wine would be a classic. Fun stuff I wish I had more.

Massive brunello that needs time to come together for an even higher score. Described well by the reviewers previously. I'll open remaining bottle in 3-5 years though it'll last significantly longer. The '97 version of this is still my benchmark brunello.

The finest Brunello I have tasted to date. Opened the wine for 12 hours...and it was perfect. The fruit and licorice on the noise were perfectly balanced with just the right amount of oak. Wine tasting in Montalcino. Superb wine, deeply intense. Anyway, My wife and I is brunello's fan. This one, I have to say is unusual. Cassis note with blackcurrants and toffee. Intense red and viscous texture sticking to the wine-glass. Complex structure, leathery to palate and good lingering finish with spice. A little bit close now, will certainly improve with life in cellar. This is going to be the brunello's benchmark for me. Impulsive, and bought a case of 2001 vintage (see Wine Spectator's comments)

Popped and poured. Bad mistake. First glass was very light with the fruit hiding and a watery mouth feel. Next glass about an hour later was a new ball game. This wine was such a pleasure to taste. Decanted for 4+ hours and then brought to the restaurant by a friend...showing a brilliant ruby color in the glass with lovely earth driven aromas of mushrooms, gravel, and moist earth with a faint floral quality as well. In the mouth vibrant red fruits, sour cherry, strawberry, and a hint of coco as well along a medium length finish.

Huge, classic style Brunello. Lots of tannins, coffee and dark fruit. Wouldn't open another for the next few years. One interesting note is that apparently the winery (yes, the winery) is forcing retailers to take this wine along with any allocation of the 2001 Tenuta Nuova. Clearly the Tenuta Nuova is the superior wine at the much better price.

The Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino Tasting (New York, NY): A little thin. Good fruit. Moderate structure. But not worth the price **/4
