Burgundy Wimps 2023 - Hôtel Frédéric Carrion table (La Trompette): In a great spot, with a dark, ashy, ferrous character but also beautifully smooth, juicy and medium-bodied. Such a pleasure to drink a wine that's both so serious and hedonistic. Like its flight-mates, tremendous with the food.

Wonderful bottle. So smooth and earthy, yet balanced acidity. Mellow, yet brightish red fruits. We first enjoyed this bottling on our honeymoon (May 2007) in Bermuda. I picked up a couple bottles upon our return. We enjoyed the first bottle on our 5-year anniversary and now the second bottle to celebrate our 15 yr anniversary.

Tons of tertiary character, especially on the nose with a cooked fruit character, mushroom, umami, soy sauce, wet leaves, and forest floor. Red and black fruits are accentuated by dried potpourri. Stewed black cherries, stewed red cherries, stewed red plums, stewed black plums, stewed cranberries + dried, crushed rose and lavender. Oak is restrained and allows the primary flavors to shine while providing structure and complexity with flavors of cloves, cocoa, black pepper, scorched cedar, and a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. An outstanding wine that I think is at the perfect spot in its drinking window.

Tasted over 3 hrs and day 2 -mild bricking -very muted warm earth berry sousbois; a little more expressive earthy cherry on day 2 -med acidity appears on the finish, med/med+ weight faint dark fruit accents the soil-dominant mid-palate, finishes with some heat and caramel and med- tannins; acidity brighter, mid-palate fuller and more focused with pretty earthy cherry on day 2 -this is fairly disjointed and lacking charm, quite disappointing for this wine in a good vintage, perhaps an off bottle; wow what a difference a day makes - this is vibrant and excellent on day 2 showing some maturity but far from tired, let your bottles get some air!

When first opened this was rather one-dimensionally cherry-like. With air, in the bottle, it took on riper and riper overtones until it reached the point of unpleasantness for me. Unfortunate and disappointing. I liked it much more ten years ago.

Decanted 60mins...right now the nose is showing the secondary scents, the sous bois, what I want in red Burg. The nose is the thing. The palate shows a glossy red fruit that feels very '02 right now, it's also still cool and rather tight. Not quite arrived yet. There is serious extract and drying power on the back end. This needs some years to be really special, but is poised to be just that. Another very good Mouches in waiting. I guess I want my Mouches with more age than my CT mates who wrote recent notes on this wine. Or my bottle is just on a slower evolution.

Quite light in color, but fresh on the palate and great with Coq au vin. Appeared to be strawberry but with minerality and great length. One of the best Beaune wines in the tasting.

The bottle is popped and decanted for a good 3 hours before drinking. Although the cork is soaked to the brim, it still comes out in one piece and the wine is in great shape. It pours a light ruby color with some hints of orange due to the age, with copious amounts of legs clinging onto the side of the glass as a result of this great vintage. On the nose, the wine is deep and brooding, with a concentrated bouquet dominated by jammy plums, stewed cherries, mushrooms, sous bois and some oak. The concentration just screams of remarkable ripeness of fruit and high extraction levels. The palate is beautifully rounded with a decent amount of acid to keep things light. More red fruits, truffles and even some smoke form the core. The finish is superbly long, lasting almost a good 45 seconds. The wine ends in an herbal, peppery note. With that much grace and power, along with effortless guile, this surely is a cerebral and enjoyable wine.

Inspired to open one by Rieslingfan's recent TN. Bottle #2 after a massively corked first bottle. This was well worth the second effort.
This has a beautiful nose. It's pure and deep, but still playful and lithe with a sense of perfectly ripe fruit playing well with soil and acid. Everything is in great balance here, truly seamless. this has cherry and raspberry fruit with the roundness of '02, but without any fat. It's sappy and intense but light on its feet. Another cliche coming, but this has power without weight and it comes across with grace and a sense of effortlessness. There's a great mix of fruit, earth and acid, where all the parts add up to a greater whole. Very long with an herbal almost basil like freshness that adds to the fruit, earth, and acid and it all leaves your mouth watering and wanting more. All in all, this has developed into a deceptively easy to drink, thought provoking wine. Beautiful. In a great spot right now with plenty of time in hand.

Local ingredient beef stew calls for a really nice wine, and I opted for the 2002 Clos des Mouches. So glad I did, as this half bottle is singing. Berry, leather, each, forest floor and all the goodness that bottle age can bring to fine Burgundy. I wish there was a prettier word than kaleidoscopic, but that pretty much fist the bill. Wonderful Burgundy.

This is in a really great place now, better than it's ever been. And I've had it at least four times now, most recently three years ago when it was very tight and inexpressive. But now it's really expanded and turned into something really broad in scale while retaining a robust veneer, almost like a Corton. Not all the flesh is filled in yet, but plenty of interesting flavors have emerged to match the physical stuffing, with a lot of earthiness and more savory meatier flavors that make it a real succulent drink. One of the best bottles of the Mouches I've ever had, and definitely punching above its weight class.

Too young now, for what I really want, but I had a few so a check in. Still showing that seemingly primary red fruit. Just beginning to offer some forest floor and tertiary scents and flavors of aged Burgundy. There is a purity and intensity to the tart fruit that leaves an impression on the palate. Quite fine and years to go...

Outstanding from the first sip and thru lunch. Red fruit, good acidity, depth and complexity. Secondary flavors underlying the fruit, which was not dried in flavor, but juicy.
This has years left on it.

A lovely wine drinking wonderfully well with roast beef. Distinctly more fruity than previous outings but with layers of complexity and depth on the finish and a hint of alcoholic power. Drank from the bottle -once left in the glass for a while the wine seemed to harden up so I suggest that decanting is not required

Open from a magnum and consumed in six hours. Sweet cherry-driven bouquet initially but keep evolve into a more balanced nose. Simple but a little bit sappy and coarse palate. Good structure for a beanue village. So so QPR.
Decanted for two hours. A pretty nose of black cherry, raspberry, strawberry, spice and earth. Tart cherry, raspberry, minerals and fine, smooth tannins on the palate. Leads to a long, smooth finish. Medium bodied and well balanced. A beautiful burgundy. Paired perfectly with filet and a cherry and pinot noir sauce.

Drank on NYE with roast beef - opened bottle for a few hours but did not decant- at first a little too astringent but soon opened up with chewy strawberry and cherry mix and slight edge of smoky bacon - the primary fruits soon faded and a glass tasted a few hours later was dull= a good wine but not the out and out classic that I had hoped for

Beautiful ruby color. Nose of red/black cherry, spice, kirsch. Similar on the palate with beautiful cherry, some raspberry fruit, some spice and earth with enough tannin to provide good backbone. Fabulous wine which paired well with a wild mushroom risotto.

I don't seem to have a note from the last time I had this wine a few months back, but it was kind of in a difficult place and so was this. Aromatically it mostly featured a cedary, woody kind of oak which may be making this a bit drying at the moment considering that the fruit has started to creep into its shell. It did get better with air, though. While I initially preferred the Morot because the sweeter oak and richer fruit there gave it a smoother presence, by the end of the bottles this one was showing better probably because it seemed to have a gentler presence.

Pop/pour. Bright red fruits, spice and perfume on the nose. Deceptively powerful on the palate, where the underlying feminine characteristics found on the nose are wrapped with a healthy fist acidity, earth, oak, and very fine grained tannins. I suspect an hour decant would do wonders for this bottle, as it seems to have all the raw materials.

Starts out rather tight and unyielding, but opens a little with air to show fresh, bright cherry fruit framed by a delicate earthiness and an interesting pine cone-like note. Still comes across very young and in need of a lot more time. I remember this being much more enjoyable some time ago from a half bottle.

Pretty aromas. Good, pure cherry fruit bordering on confected, but not crossing over. With air, it loses the confectionery aspect while picking up some earthiness. Rich and generous, it caresses the palate.

Pale red with raspberries everywhere. Overly high on acids but still balanced and has a certain savoir faire over it. Small body, some spice and ... nothing... This is just expensive smurf juice. Wimpy, slender whisks... Still waiting to be impressed.(87p)

Lovely scents of sensually pure ripe red berries a with a hint of crushed rock and a bit of fresh-cut grass in the background, maybe a touch of caramel?. On the palate the tension between the silky red fruit and the minerality is even more pronounced, and the tannin is so fine-grained that the wine drinks very smooth and supple despite the evident structure. Finishes long. This is drinking wide open and great right now but it should only get better as it adds more aged complexity.

Pretty, and seems to be developing well. The aromatics have coalesced and developed to the point where you could now call it a perfume, although it's most expressive from the pop of the cork and quiets down over the course of the evening. This has a very feminine, slender shape, and yet there's an undeniable alcoholic warmth on the back end that feels much higher than the 13% indicated on the label. It's a strange sensation because otherwise the material of the wine has a satiny pliancy. Alcohol is often said to add body, but that's not the case here; it adds a spirity kick without fattening up the wine, so I'm hoping that maybe it's just at a point of its evolution where the regression of some of the fruit material is highlighting the alcohol without a fundamental imbalance. I guess we'll see. Either way, it's not a closed wine. There is still lovely fruit sweetness to this with some cigar smokiness deepening the tone.

Strawberry and raspberry notes, earth, and a pinch of wood on the nose. This is tight yet, with taut red berry flavors and plenty of acidity. If you open now, be sure to give a generous amount of air, as it loosens up after a couple of hours of decanting, showing ripe strawberry flavors, even though it remains reserved in any event.

Nice complex, developing nose. Starts out sharp and funky - a little cheese, a little body odor. Then nutty notes come out, some earthy mushrooms and finally after a while in the glass some coffee notes. Very well integrated tannins. Just a touch of pepper on the finish. Nice lingering acidity.

3rd bottle from my cellar and popped and poured. Pale ruby red. Lovely nose of cherry, spice and earth, but primarily fruit and spice. Minerals, earth, and some licorice with a tad of sour cherry and plum. No tannin and drinking nicely. Balanced with a good finish. A little more fruit desired, but still a nice wine that is ready to go.

From half bottle. Starts out with a gorgeous scent that only gets better with air, combining fresh cherries and other red fruited flavours with spice, warm earth and various other non-fruit elements that are hard to describe, but so captivating to smell. Still rather young in the mouth, but it's very nicely balanced with rich fruit, oak subtly woven into the background and a long earthy finish.

Still very fine. Beautiful aromatics; savory, with spice and sweet fruit; pretty darn deep and complex; quite lengthy finish, with a hint of--is it iron? In retrospect, a wine I'm actually pleased to have purchased six bottles of (high praise). Definitely not over the hill.

Cherry-iron nose, with celery seed; goes from sweet red fruit on the front of the palate to mouth-puckering tannins on the end. Sour cherry flavor predominates with bramble, spice and earthtones. Medium body and appetite-enhancing acidity make this an excellant food wine.

A very, very enjoyable bottle of wine. Would have been even better if it had been decanted (D'oh!) because it was only towards the end of the last glasses that the wine really started to blossom and show a beautiful, fleshy fullness that captured everyone's attention. Six of six tasters gave it thumbs up, and were left wanting more.

Aerated with Vinturi and decanted for one hour. Aromas of red cherry, rhubarb, spice, toasted oak and vanilla. Tart cherry and smooth fine tannins lead to a medium to long, dry finish. Medium bodied and well balanced. Paired with filet mignon and cherry, pinot noir sauce. An enjoyable red burgundy that is drinking well.

2 hour decant. Tart cherry, earth, rhubarb, toasted oak, and vanilla on the nose and palate. Medium bodied. Red fruit combines with fine, soft tannins on the mid-palate. Medium length finish. A very nice red burgundy, and an enjoyable bottle.

Just coming into its drinking window. This was wonderfully paired with the flavors in the tagliatelli.
