To be expanded... notes of vanilla at the start, strawberry, cream - a classic Trevallon. Silky texture, with rounded tannins, very smooth, long and memorable finish. Gets better after an hour+ of decanting. Perfect for drinking now (6/2023)

13% abv, Drank in day 2, 1/5 left. Nose is medium intense, raisins, eucalyptus, dried prune, old leather, light smokiness from the charcoal, preserved citrus skins, earth and all spice. M+ acidity, somewhat coarse tannins and palate fading. But still showing there depth and elegance of Trevallon nevertheless.

Garnet with slight orange rim. Though the colour predicts a bottle with further evolution compared to the bottle I had in april, the nose is quite mute first and needs time to blossom up. The scents and flavors are the same as in april with the exception that I detect some minty notes presumely from the cabernet and later notes of black tea. Of course still quite tannic, so better with food now if you can't deal with this. I have doubts that this will ever become smooth or less tannic before the fruit beginns to fate. Nevertheless, at least for my palate, not unbalanced. 5/12/17/8 -2025

My last and best bottle - how often does that happen! Everything seems to have hit a point of balance, with acidity and fruit beautifully framed by the ripe rich tannins. Thank you as always Trevallon for making wonderful, exciting and original wines.

Cork in pristine condition. Deep garnet with no orange tint to the rim. Pnp. This welcomes you with intense red fruit scents, a bit of strawberries, cherries, garrigue, also forestfloor. Vibrant acidity, but not out of balance imho as other notes describe. The tannins are high and adstringent, what is a bit surprising given the vintage, but they are not unripe and there is nothing green here. Light on its feet as always and not very intense on the palate first. Nevetheless it benefits from airing. Two hours after opening the bottle it blossoms up and becomes more complex with more play and intensity (even black fruits now), no matter if decanted or in the opened bottle. This seems mature to me, but is going to age well at least for another decade possibly to shed some tannins in a cool cellar. This bottle was stored at higher than textbook temperatures since release, so it may be more advanced than bottles stored at 12°C or lower. The producer suggest 2 decades of ageability. This is not one of the top years as far as one can assess this now. Excellent anyway. -2030, 5/12/17/9, 93+

There has been amazing bottle variation in my 3 of Trévallon 2003. The first 4 years ago was mean and green; the second just under 2 months ago was better but with still obtrusive acidity; this third and last was the real classy Trévallon deal. It showed Bordelais finesse alongside Mediterranean underlying generosity and the acidity and remaining tannins were perfectly balanced. Not quite up to the heights of 1989, 1995 and 1998 but very good at last.

This was enjoyable and definitely better than my previous bottle about 4 years ago but was still quite high in acidity and lacking the seduction of better Trévallon vintages. Good.

Still seemingly Cabernet dominated but without the full Trevallon glory, this is a full-bodied red with seering acidity mingling with the still strong tannins. Nice, drinkable, but don’t see where it goes from here.....

Not my favourite Trevallon, nor to be honest my favourite European year - the scorchingly amazingly hot year that shrivelled everything in sight. This remains balanced, has a predominance of Cabernet on the palate right now, but has tannins that for me are not quite in balance with the fruit. I am not sure if they will ever get totally in balance. Enjoyable, but as one of my all-time favourite producers, with sadness I report that you should probably buy a different vintage - a little disappointing.

I'm a big fan of Trévallon. In some vintages, e.g.1989, the wine is really great. So I am puzzled by the showing of this wine in 2003, which in most of France was an exceptionally warm year leading to often over-ripe wines. Before food, after a pleasant palate entry where round Syrah seemed in evidence, raw green acidity kicked in and the finish, though modestly long, was dominated by harsh tannins. After eating some lamb, the tannins were tamed but not the raw acidity. Was the maturity of the Cabernets blocked by the heat? What should I do with my remaining two bottles? Hang on in the hope of ripening? Or sell them while the going is fair?
Very interesting. Nose is complex, deep, screams cab sauvignon. If I didn't know there was 50% syrah I wouldn't have found it. The palate started off rather rugged and dry with dark berries, tobacco and leather premdominating. It evolved rapidly towards macerated prunes. Very satisfied with this bottle but I side with those comments that feel the wine is ready and won't keep getting better with more time.

Weekly tasting group #157; Cult (@ DJ): Garnet orange rim. In the bouquet ripe and somewhat sweet fruits, forest floor, coffee, tea, tobacco and leather. On the palate red currants, bell pepper, sweet pipe tobacco, medium plus acidity and drying tannin. Special wine. Imho the wine is ready now.

Finally starting to come together. Much softer and more mature than the previous bottle we had two years ago. Complex spicy notes and still distinct tannins so I will not hurry with the next bottle.

Not ready at all. Tough as nails and unyielding. There is something special underneath it all. Let's hope the tannins subside before the fruit runs out.

Medium red; very open expressive nose, eucalyptus, red cheries; round, pleasant, elegant, some greenish notes but not seen as a fault, rather underlining the elegance, nice sweet aftertaste, however a bit tannic ending; slightly flat with limited depth, however, well tasting and with nuances

Disappointing. A few weeks ago, I drank this wine (vintage 2001) and was spectacular. For this reason, I bought a few bottles of vintage 2003 (available on importer). However, this was not the same level.

87 pts

Very backwards when just opened, so a good decanting is recommended. After some air it starts to open up. Quite strong and dense (tastes stronger than the 13% stated on the label). The still dry tannins suggest that further cellaring might be a good idea.

Deep black color with some thining & browining on the rim. Good nose of cedar enhanced by black currant & black plum skin. A vein of herbaceousness runs through the fruit on the nose. Tart entry of herb wrapped black plum with a distinct leather & stony mineral element. The tart stoniness lasts long after the finish. A little to tart for my taste.

Very interesting nose showing spices, blood, iron and herbs. Medium-bodied, with tannins that will ensure a long bottle evolution. Finishes a little dry at the moment. I will wait another 5 years to open another bottle.

Having read the community notes i thought: time to try one from my own stock. Result: no need to hurry. wine is already good to drink but has an aging potential of at least 5 yrs. Ok the wine smells - but thats the bouquet of the region: herbs de provence, black current. pure red. Concentrated, elegant, with an earthy tannic structure underpinning the spicy fruit. Finishes dry and spicy. excellent. Wish I would have more...

Trevallon 1985-2004: This is very ripe with an exotic nose - woody, lingonberries, warm fruit compote with a touch of apricot glaze and light floral and mineral undertones. Soft and rich in the mouth, opulent but ultimitly a touch simple with round fruit over a base of compressed earth and mineral tones finishing with clumsy and astringent tannins. Not particularly successful. 2010-2017
