Opened by Jcubed. 2nd time I have had this wine but the last time was on release in 2003. Just as good now. Traditional style Brunello with a character that Italians call "tipicita". A little more alcohol on the nose of this wine that the other five 1997 Brunellos. Dark cherry, burnt oak and tobacco notes with a bright finish. 95 points.

Brooding olive tapenade and mushrooms. The aromas keep lingering in your mouth. Still slightly grippy tannins. Layers and layers of complexity. Fascinating wine.

Clearly the best of the three 1997 Brunellos served next to each other (others being Biondi Santi and Altesino Montosoli). This is also by far the most modern, oaky, unctuous but integrating nicely. Not sure this didn't taste better when it was younger though.

A Double Birth Year Celebration (San Diego): Not decanted. Clear dark inky garnet color. Bouquet of prunes, sun-dried cherries, leather, mocha, charcoal, nutmeg, cloves. Similar on the palate, full body, seems a bit overripe but highly enjoyable.

I looked up my highest scoring Brunello and it was a '96 Cerretalto that I consumed in 2007 at 11 years after vintage so I was pretty excited for this bottle. I sourced it online at a close-out in 2011 and was waiting for a good occasion. Well we were with our son and he is launching his own alternative therapy business so we were in the mood to celebrate!
I opened and as usual took a first sip. There are certain bottles that I know right from the get go that they were going to be special. This would need some time so as I usually do with Brunello I slow Ox'd the wine for a couple of hours. The wine was very elegant and you could tell it was a very well crafted wine. It was sweet, sour, bright and tart all at the same time as you sipped. The nose really started to open up after 3+ hours and I gauge that by how far from the glass my nose has to be to get a good scent of sour cherries, spice and cured olives. Meanwhile my wife did not enjoy it as much and we did not pair it with an Italian dish as I always do with Brunello so that may have been the reason.
I think this was a bit past peak and for all I know it was sitting on a retail shelf until I purchased it so likely not ideal storage. Looking back at my notes most of memorable Brunello's have been consumed around the 10-year mark and that will continue to be my guideline. Overall though an very nice wine to enjoy and contemplate.

The bottle was opened for my name day. I think that was the ideal moment for this and there is not anything to win from further cellaring.Explosive nose even after 2-3 hours with medium++ body and medium aftertaste.Maybe 2-3 years before was much better but it was very enjoyable.Spicy, herbs red fruits and sweetness all time.I think that was a good choice.

Cellared well, decanted and given 5 hours of air. In the end a little disappointed. It was a well made and structured wine and Brunellos always have such a great nose that takes me to Montalcino in an instant but this was a 1997 and a high end house and release and the so while it was a nice wine, the QPR was just not great. Not sure if other 97's have lost their fruit but this seemed to lack the fruit and depth I expected.

this wine is aging wonderfully and has plenty of life left. brick red with a pale rim in the glass. we drank this over two days. day one the wine was still tight with gripping tannins. some cherry, leather and wet stone on the nose. leather , tobacco and soil on the palate with hints of smoke and cherry. on day two the tannins are soft and smooth. much more cherry on the nose and palate with some dark fruit coming through. the balance is near perfect with this wine really shining on day two. this easily has another 5 years left.

This is most certainly the finest Brunello I have ever tasted and I have tasted quite a few. This wine has finesse, incredible purity, depth, and freshness. We opened it because we feared it wouldn't hold up much long. Hold up, heck, it's still going strong. We tasted several samples of Cerretalto at the winery and this bottle beats them all. I knew when I pulled the cork and got a whiff of that boquet of sweet fruit and flowers in bloom. The only thing this wine lacks is that "hit you over the head" message that many wonderful California wines deliver.

This was screamingly delicious. Enjoyed next to an 04 tenuta nuova which I typically regard as a special bottle, the cerretalto demonstrated it's lofty cost with a lovely balance of acidity, voluptuous fruit and silky tannin. The fruit and complexity shines, especially with the tertiary components complementing the younger fruit. This could clearly last and possibly develop more character for at least another ten years, though it's hard to resist considering its current state. It's remarkable to see how well this has integrated the wood, which by contrast has a strong presence in the 04 TN. Another notable observation is how the structural elements of acid and tannin have struck such a seamless integration at this stage compared to the younger bottle.

Had three bottles of this in the last year and it's stunning. Along with the Salvioni 99, the best Brunello I've had. Ethereal yet powerful, pitch perfect fruit and acidity, and a haunting, lasting finish.

Another of my 1997 Brunello drink em up effort. This particular bottle had a strong smokey meat noise that I did not care for. I gave it about 5 hours and it still hung tough. The wine tasted wonderful with a good fruit and tannin balance with none of the nose in the taste. I have two left, so I plan to drink another one and see if the smokey nose is present or not.

Cerretalto Vertical Tasting (Restaurant 1.TH (CPH)): The nose seemed very closed and even with additional airation I couldn't get it to yield anything other than dark cherry and some yoghurt. Luckily the palate was completely different! Was almost assaulted by the very rough acidity and harsh tannins. A full body of dark cherries balances everything nicely. Even though the wine seems very forward and almost oppressive I still feel that the wine has a certain balance to it. Beautiful wine!! A lot better than a bottle I opened 1,5 months ago.

BYO tasting (My place): Dark red color with an orange hue. Pure, fragrant red berries, cherries, and some basement on the nose. On the palate it starts very well with juicy cherry fruit first, but when the acidity and tannins kicks in on the midpalate and finish, they become too dominating, almost strangling the pleasure of the wine. Dusty, dry finish.

BYO with the CPH wine club without any name @ Terkels place (Terkels place): The nose is very interesting with notes of both dark cherries but also some meat-notes in the background. Beyond compare! This rich, deep, ruby colored "Italian stallion" went remarkably well with both the broiled striped bass and the seafood pasta special as Osteria Giotto (Montclair, NJ) last night. Didn't even need long to breathe - it was complex, mellow, yet at the same time, had strong traces of berry, licorice, earth. Loved it! Still drinking beautifully. Bibenda Day 2007 (AIS, Parco dei Principi, Rome): Garnet in colour; lots of sediment. Nose of roasted/toasted walnuts, coffee, meat. Palate shows high alcohol, medium acidity, ripe/rich tannins; notes of roast meat and roasted kernels; so savory! Wonderful, rich, concentrated, long, complex, satisfying. [Is this wine particularly high in umami components? Tastes like it.]. Always my favourite Brunello.

This was my favorite Italian of the 2003 WS Grand Tour. The essence of "Tipicita" as they call it in Italy. Classic Sangiovese nose of violets and cherry. Interesting rich black cherry, crushed grape skin and chocolate notes. A big full bodied wine with a long caressing finish. Needs time for the tannins to settle but drinking well now I thought. 95-96.
