Somewhat closed, crisp red fruits, a bit vegetal and stemmy, good length, not the purity of fruit one hopes for in a DRC though. Did not quite live up to the high expectations, but certainly an excellent wine with significant potential to improve with some age. - 93+ points

Opened in Hong Kong. DRC Assortment Tasting. Slow-oxed for a few hours before serving.
This bottle fell slightly short of my (admittedly, very high) expectations. I tend to love the RSV out of the DRC line-up, but this bottle felt slightly closed and tightly wound, and wasn't as expressive or beautifully red-fruit-feminine that I look for and love in DRC RSV. Still, an excellent wine - stemmy aromatics, good fruit and extremely long finish. Just not a great wine in the context of what I know this can do.
I'd leave this for 5+ years and see where it's at.

Beautifully perfumed nose and super detailed spice, red fruit and touch of stems. More forward than I expected. Outstanding finesse and balance on the palate. Long, lingering finish with nice grip and fine tannin. Drank while waiting for the 2008 Leroy RSV to come around tonight. Not bad for a fluffer wine!

DRC, RSV Vertical: 93, 01, 05, 07, 14 (Republique, LA): Served fifth in a five vintage vertical. The oak/tannin shows more prominent but at the same time its also very refined, sculpted and chiseled, adding tension and micro abrasions throughout. Beautiful clarity and freshness to the fruit, not heavy at all. Overall pretty much as expected, this wine is more about potential, though good to see that it is in fact very cellarworthy, as I’ve had some recent vintages of DRC that were much too forward for my tastes and counter to the producer reputation. Was able to enjoy a glass the next day and it had unwound some, showing very classy, though still clearly demanding more time in the cellar. Should be a beauty in time.

Rescue Animal gathering at Jailbreak - all Burgundy (Jailbreak Brewery, Laurel, MD): Medium expressive nose displaying concentrated black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, black cherry, raspberry, a hint of stem, strong Asian spices, sous bois, sap, cinnamon, caramel and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of rich concentrated black fruit, rich yet pure and beautifully balanced, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long concentrated black fruit driven finish with a hint of stem at the end. This is the most concentrated wine of the flight. I am surprised by the sous bois note. A great future ahead.

DRC @ WS: Love 2014 in general, but this was showing extremely young and tight. Time did open it up quite a bit and it was much more enjoyable at the end of the night. 2/3 in the flight.

Such a lovely bouquet on the nose with so much expression on the palate. Clearly a step above the 14 Eche and 14 Grand Eche tonight. Didn’t have the green of the GE and had an extra gear on the Eche. So persistent and rich on the palate. Damn. This is where it’s at.

Mix of red and dark fruits here making it more weighty and less vibrant vs the Tache but still very well balanced. But a more relaxing wine to drink vs the Tache and of course better value.

"Single" Bottle SLDS @ Glass: Redcurrant, orange, fennel, liquorice and five spice - this needed quite a lot of air to open up. Very tight on the palate, really wound up. Still shows class, with great balance and interest from the spice overlaid across a red fruit profile. Obviously needs more time.

A tasting of the 2014 wines by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti with Aubert de Villaine. Mama mia, what a nose! Aubert described the nose to being similar to the RC itself. So this is promising for the RC following later...Beautiful round and silk aftertaste!

We decided to take a crack at a few of the 2014 DRC's. Hey, someone has to do it. All youngsters as expected, and we rated them blind. The consensus ranking was tight, with the GE slightly edging out the others as the group favorite. My ranking was Richebourg, La Tache, Grands Echezeaux, RSV. The rest of the bottles will now be put away for a long time.

2017 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/9/2017-11/14/2017 (Villa D’este, Lake Como and Milan): Small pour, expressive nose displaying sweet red fruit, cranberry, strawberry jam, a hint of blackberry, strong stem note, Vosne spice, dark spices, cinnamon, sap, cola and mineral. Already showing exceptional balance, very polished, bright silky red fruit and stem driven palate impression, bright acidity, very fine tannins and a long crunch red fruit and stem driven finish. Based on the strong stem, I suspect this will develop a wonderful Asian spice note. Excellent showing.

DRC 2014 Vintage Presentation: Tasted during a DRC 2014 vintage arrivage event of an official DRC distributor. The 2014 vintage tasted noticeably different than the stellar 2013 which I still vividly re-collect. Right from the first sniff 2014 had notes of pine and green leaves intermixed with its red fruit, earth and game scents. I is the first time that I encountered this aroma profile in a DRC though I have to admit unlike in Premier Grand Cru Bordeaux I can't go back to double digit number of vintages I have tasted to place this in a large reference grid. However, it was a discussion point at our table where other DRC connoisseurs were present. Was it due to borderline ripeness in 2014, earlier picking because of avoidance of Suzuki damage or just the weather? We will see if this persists when the wines are mature. TN: A step up from the three wines before the RSV has more blue fruit, volume and aromatic depth. This year it was also much closer to the Richbourg.

DRC Tasting of the 2014 line up. The RSV starts out very shy in the glass, not giving away much at all at first. Then, boom!, it opens up and reveals some of its hidden greatness. DRC RSV hallmark nose, airy with flowers and stems in that crazy sexy mix. Deep Vosne spices showing, roses, perfume, notes of salmiak licorice, sweet ripe red berries. Palate is such a sexy and deep example of the purest Pinot fruit to be found. Sweet strawberries mixed with ripe and slightly tart cranberries, a touch of fine pomegranate present too. So are the stems and wonderful minerals, together with a lovely and perfectly balance acidty. Silkier and less fat and oily than both the Échézeaux wines just tasted, great depth and length but mostly this wine is just so Insanely clean! Also, as always, the sexiest wine to be found, anywhere, the airiness and floral notes mixed with the clean fruits and spices, minerals and structure. Another killer top RSV from DRC, with a bright future ahead of it. (95 – 97+)

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Vintage Release (Le Bernardin Prive): The nose showed exotic floral and spice tones with crushed violets and marine-influenced minerality. On the palate, I found lifted, yet structured textures with lasting inner floral tones that seemed nearly identical to those found on the nose. It finished on tart blackberry and herbal tones.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Cellar Visit and Tasting (Vosne-Romanée): Barrel tasting at the domaine. ML 100% complete. Extremely rich and alluring aromas with lush fruit coming through to start, leaner in the middle to finish, which comes across with great textures. No surprise, this clearly shows it needs time. Great potential.
