Muted nose of brambles and strawberry. Dry mouthfeel without a balance of acidity. Flavors of red fruit, hints of cedar and leather. Finish is medium in length with coco and cigar box notes. Ok, and might improve a little more.

This bottle drank very well, paired with a nice Spanish meal consisting of a chickpea stew and patatas bravas. But it's at or just past peak, recommend enjoying sooner rather than later.

Dark red with a clear edge. Light to medium bodied, cranberries, tart cherries, dusty tannins, white pepper, a bit of smoke, and a short to medium finish. Underwhelming, but it didn't cost much.

Loving this. Bright and oakey, but in Spanish style. Opened other bottles too early. Drinking perfectly now. Punches way above its weight. Super value.

Immediately aromatic nose of mahogany wood, sautéed mushroom, toast, dill, and black currant fruit. Med-full bodied with distinct flavours, polished tannins and good acidity. Toasty, saucy finish. 13% abv. 4/5

A blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, this has a lovely, maturing, medium+ intensity nose that is savoury, woody, baking spice, tobacco leaf, and barnyard, with hints of dried cherry-berry. It is medium-bodied with complex, wood spice driven aroma replays on the flavour profile. It has very good acidity, while tannis are soft, yet still have some grip. Finish length is very good.

Rating it for being a red wine and the bottle was not corked. Very disappointing tasting considering the high rating this wine got from professionals. Tasted watery, acidic and unstructured. Too bad I have more of it. They might all end up in a very fruity sangria.

Light body. Generally typical rioja. Nicely balanced. The 92 score seems a bit generous but overall decent for the price (paid 9.99 including shipping). Easy food pairing wine. Maybe not quite enough umpf for quaffing alone. 1/7/18 More recent bottle more inspiring. Still very typical rioja but more umpf (and quaffing after dinner quite happily). Nice woodsy side with cedar, mushroom, maybe some green pepper. Medium acidity and integrated tannins. Upped to 89 from 87.

Color: purple-ruby, medium opacity. Nose: Raspberry, red currant. Palate: Raspberry, blackberry. Mediocre tannic density. Acidic edge is rough. Body: medium. Finish: short.
Comments: Robert Parker gives this one 92 points with over-the-top praise, “The 2014 Hazana Vinas Viejas is simply one of the greatest values in Rioja that money can buy … Loads of lead pencil shavings, black and red currants, licorice and tobacco leaf all jump from the glass of this dense, ruby/purple wine. Soft tannins, medium to full body and fabulous intensity, make for a sensational Rioja to drink over the next 5-7 years.” Utter hogwash. I could detect none of that complexity. This is an immature wine, with nothing positive to be said about it. Worth no more than $5/bottle.

A light and enjoyable wine that got better upon opening. Nicely structured but nothing complex, a good everyday wine that should go well with many types of food. Slightly brighter the next day. Liked it and would buy again but prefer Rio Madre gratiano at this price point.

Drinking nicely now & into 2020, though 6 mos or so of aging MIGHT even improve it! 92 pts WA [This vendor's $9.95 is HIGHLY competitive!]

(Day 2) - color: medium-dark purple velvet; nose: faint oak; taste: medium-bodied mouth feel, red berry taste, medium-length finish with somewhat tired-tasting rhubarb notes, abundant chalky tannins; overall: musty Old World personality that I don't favor, lacked balance as of Dec 2016, was vastly better on Day 2, fair QPR ($12.60/bottle on sale), matched well with pate on toast...but even so -- for me, not a repeat purchase.
