From a near perfect looking magnum bought in Bordeaux. Soft, open nose of cigar box, subtle but sweet red fruit. Earthy with a touch of green. Great balance and soft effortless finish.

Talking Bordeaux (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Medium dark plus/maroon color with a 7mm transition to clear. PNP, drank a glass plus over 3 hours. What a harmonious old soul at 65+ years. This took 15 to 20 minutes to start to kick off the cobwebs and start to come around. Then, like a snowball rolling downhill, it took on weight and depth as it kept building. Such a pretty mix of fruits running the gamut from black to red to blue, very bright still, resolved and sleek with an emerging perfume. On the palate the red fruits stand out, lively red raspberries, long, vivid and sleek, sous bois, mushroom. It was a joy just to watch this build and then shine for the three hours we enjoyed it. Thanks Mike for sharing this gem. For me, 96-97pts and the highlight of the night.

This was the oldest bottle in my cellar and i decided to take it out for dinner with 2 good friends. Still a great wine drinking spectacularly well and almost 70 years old. Beautiful nose and plenty of fruit and no sign of decay... Wow

A 65th Birthday Celebration, Slightly COVID Delayed (EL Ideas - Chicago IL): Small glass, brief note. From the rare 2.25 L (Marie Jeanne) bottle. In good condition with lots of cigarbox, earth and lingering fruit that refused to go away, all the way through to a long, earthy finish. Very enticing overall. Everybody liked this, but others were not as enthralled as I was.

Out of a Marie Jeanne and decanted long before dinner. Delicious and lasting both on the palate (sweet finish) and in the glass. Remarkable color with the age of an older Bordeaux. Special to share on my belated 65th with some many wonderful friends.

Popped and poured, and drank over one hour. Fully soaked cork that came out in one piece (pulled out with my fingers). No signs of corking and in surprisingly good shape for such a man old wine. Fully mature Bordeaux and I would have guessed thirty years younger. Glad I had the chance to try this.

Cork came out nicely and in one piece. The wine was in really great shape and would’ve never guessed it was 65 years old. Had all the classic aged Bordeaux notes of cedar, tobacco, but also some fruit still hanging on in the finish. Very impressive!

Magnum. Wonderful expression that is all secondary profile of tobacco, dried cherries, woodsy aspects. A touch of grip still on the finish. Perfect spot with beef.

This opens with a truffle laden, earthy, tobacco and spice perfume. This fully mature wine displays the special, unique patina of age, but with a slight rustic quality to the finish.

Magnums for Dave (Jean-Georges - New York, NY): From magnum. Really great combination of mostly secondary character with still vibrant fruit. Powerful, dense and great concentration with sensational cigar box aromatics. Great finish with plenty of evolving spice and sous bois.

South Florida does Pichon-Lalande: Nearly outstanding, this grande dame of the Pichon-Lalande vertical at Cafe Maxx for me was even better than the '59 and both appeared perfectly preserved. Medium garnet color with the expecting brick color at the rim, the '55 immediately offered classic old Bordeaux aromas of cedar, bark, leather and dried leaves. A bit of dryness on the finish kept it from being even better than it was, but there was a genuine gentle sweetness of age in the middle palate and the texture was pleasing.

Light brown. Red-brownish core. More forest floor here. Tree bark also present. Concentrated and complex, and tinkling nicely in an intense way. Nicely sized and full of dimension. Arrhhh, a few more dimensions and facets would have merited a few more points. But nicely long on the finish.

Youthful acidity and dried fruit, dry cherry liquor, black tea, nice surprise.

Not spoiled but faded, dry, too old.
