Magnums for Dave (Jean-Georges - New York, NY): From magnum. Really great combination of mostly secondary character with still vibrant fruit. Powerful, dense and great concentration with sensational cigar box aromatics. Great finish with plenty of evolving spice and sous bois.
South Florida does Pichon-Lalande: Nearly outstanding, this grande dame of the Pichon-Lalande vertical at Cafe Maxx for me was even better than the '59 and both appeared perfectly preserved. Medium garnet color with the expecting brick color at the rim, the '55 immediately offered classic old Bordeaux aromas of cedar, bark, leather and dried leaves. A bit of dryness on the finish kept it from being even better than it was, but there was a genuine gentle sweetness of age in the middle palate and the texture was pleasing.
Light brown. Red-brownish core. More forest floor here. Tree bark also present. Concentrated and complex, and tinkling nicely in an intense way. Nicely sized and full of dimension. Arrhhh, a few more dimensions and facets would have merited a few more points. But nicely long on the finish.
