Took a while to open, the cork broke, but it's okay. I bought a Durand as a result, which should arrive soon.
First pour, not great, felt flat. Poured it in a decanter and let it sit for two hours.
Really opened up with that decanting. Brick color, notes of raspberry. Nice complex flavors. Still pretty tannic, I kept having to drink water alongside it.
Finished the bottle that night and it just got better as time went on.
2005 was a great year for Bordeaux and to get a bottle like this for around $30 is a fantastic QPR in my view.
90 points.

Bought 24b for 15/b from Sam's about 12 years ago; this is #14. Medium purple with hint of amber edge; mature somewhat grapey nose; mature cab sauv palate, bit of oxidation. This wine took time to come around, and now it's showing a bit of decline. Mixed half the bottle with equal part '18 Alamos malbec, and the blend was a bit better--overall tasty. Stored horizontally, first, in a cool, dark basement and then in a basement locker in a condo since purchase. My evaluation: For me, scores on a "100-point scale" are misleading. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. This is notable when considering quality, age, and price.

(Decanted for one hour, 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon) Mature on the nose showing sweet blackberries and black currant combined with leather and cedar wood in a pleasant style. Still showing some austere tannins but combining well with the fruit that is starting to dry up showing a structured finish with some wood again. This is good now and should not be kept much longer. (Best 2015-2020)

Another Sam's acquisition bites the dust. I think it was a lunchtime deal. Anyway, the $15 I paid looks good compared with the $40 now required to obtain the same. One of the negative consequences of drinking mass-produced New World wine is that your palate is wrecked when confronted by a more classic style. I could sense Dulcie recoiling at the much leaner, almost acerbic quality of this Coufran. No giant amongst the Bordeaux, nonetheless some berry fruit, plenty of woody components, lean and rather short on the finish. It will likely never be better than what it is now, and that is okay.

On the nose: Dark berries and blackcurrant in particular. Oak, of course. Wet forest. I'll throw in some leather and musk as well. Beautiful smell.
On the palate: The first sip doesn't quite deliver what what was promised by the nose. Dark berries, wood. I think the 2009 offers more complexity, so given the choice between the two the 2009 would clearly be my choice.
3 year ago I thought that the 2005 needs more time. Now, I think the time is about right, although I also think it will drink well for quite a few years still.
Coufran is always an interesting west side Bordeaux due to the unusually high fraction of Merlot. One of my favorites in this price range. The "Pomerol of Haut-Médoc" (although I would prefer an actual Pomerol).

This is a decent sample from 2005 that has a vibrant hint of violet and a jammy almost marmalade blackberries showing on the nose. Palate is starting to have smooth tannins and lots of fruit still and with a nice finish. This was drinking nicely with a grilled entrécôte.

Drinking very nicely showing mature nose of leather, cherries and sois bois. The palate is still showing very austere tannins but the fruit is fading out. Should not keep too long.

Textbook Merlot. Pencil, Tobacco and dark fruit, more on cherry note than blueberry. The finish is pleasant but all too short and leaves you waiting for something that will not show. Medium tannins, medium body and medium (13%) alcohol. With a tad more body and a finish with a little length it would have been classy. Still excellent in my book.

Reasonably priced bottle, 10years old. Smells quite mature, truffle and cigars. Palate has a lot of fruit and some decent gritty tannin too, some bitterness but it goes well with some food. Short finish.

More than double what I paid for the very fine Tour Seran from the same vintage that we drank a few days ago, and not nearly as good in all departments. Less yielding in the tannins - a rather rough edge and a bit subdued fruit-wise. It is pretty decent but not one to relish.

Glinsende. Lukt av kirsebær med litt fat. Lett syrlig anslag. Litt bitter med litt tanniner. Ikke så fyldig, men absolutt god.

Well I wouldn't have guessed the 85% Merlot here either, the wine is rather austere, although it did open up with aeriation and revealed a good structure and balance with rounded tannins and good acidity. Overall still pretty good classic haut-médoc but could be a bit more generous with the fruit. Went well with lamb steak. I guess it will last upto five years more but probably best had over the next three years.

Finishers' bottle in Marathon du Medoc opened a year after the finish. Compared side by side with 2005 Château Fourcas Hosten. This was somewhat closed and quite tight. Back label claimed that Ch. Coufran is "Pomerol of Medoc" but it didn't feel this way, seemed like a pure, dense Cabernet, didn't get that friendly fruit of Merlot. Ok, but not more.

A bit closed I agree, but opens up a bit with some hours in the decanter. Warm red color. Dark fruit on the nose with hints of oil, earth (soil) and gras. Sweet fruit on the palate with fresh acidity. Medium long finish.

This wine clearly needs a few more years. I have had a few 05s recently and they all need more time. Day 1: Decanted for 3 hours and there was no taste. I poured the wine back in the bottle. Day 2: Decanted again for 2 hours, and you could start to taste wood (toasty oak), earth and minerals. I have no doubt this wine will be quite good in 3 to 4 years.

Too much oak for the black cherry dominated, round wine leaves this feeling far too woody at the moment. Perhaps time will help this come together, if the oak fades.

Youthful red and dark fruitiness with hints of cedar and earthy tones on the nose. Cherries and some truffles, almost burgundian. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and tight tannic structure, some oak and red fruits, and a dry, medium finish. This one has many years to go before reaching its peak.

We drank this with Teriyaki Salmon on 7/25/11 (not the best pairing, but dinner plans changed after wine was already open). After an hour in the decanter it was very rough and unpleasant. After the second hour it had a pleasant, fragrant bouquet of plum, black currant, black cherry, leather, spice and coffee aromas. The palate was smooth, round and well balanced with flavors that followed the nose. 88+

the nose is absoultely gorgeous, of dark cassis and plum fruit, followed by that bordeaux funk but the palate is tight and tannic, not showing much anything except hinting at long long term potenital. This is a wine to try again in 24, 48, and 168 hrs as it may open up. If not i have no way to know how to score it 85? on potential drink in 20+ yrs, but who knows really?. 2005 appears to be a monster. -- seemed pretty much the same at 24hrs. At 48hrs the nose has become more reticent but the mouth has opened up considerably showing a rich style wine with big plum and berry fruit, with a hint of sweetness and good structure tannins. Its amazing what a few days can do. Increasing my score to 88 and will save another glass out for a few more days.

I guess I still have my pink glasses on. Ch. Coufran 1981 was the first "expensive" wine I bought back in the day as a poor grad student. It's very dry ion the palate but the fruit is generous and it was nice to meet an old friend again :o)

If this wine is the typical value play in the much heralded 2005 vintage then it's not much of a value. I find it to be on par with much less expensive wine from various areas of the world especially from CA. The nose is dry and spicy with very little fruit the minty hints are interesting but it reminds me more of car air freshener than fresh mints. In the mouth it's rather harsh for a wine this several years of bottle aging baked in. Meaty notes with cedar and tobacco with virtually no fruit to be found. The finish is super dry and dusty.
I tend to like the fruit bombs but I can still appreciate the old world style wines. This is just not very nice but I am sure the favor profile may appeal to some people out there.
Remember you don't drink the label.

We drank this with grilled chicken on 3/15/10. It had a luscious bouquet of plum, black currant, black cherry, chocolate, coffee and loam aromas. The palate was smooth, plush, round and well balanced with plum, red currant, black cherry, coffee and cocoa powder flavors. It turned toward sour red fruit on the finish. It was much better than I expected. 89+

Cabernet, Merlot blend that is not yet displaying its full potential but definitely showingt the promise of the terrific 2005 vintage. I found the wine a bit harsh with undeveloped tannins, nice complexity, beautiful color, pleasant smell, and typical Haut Medoc power. We decanted her after first sip for an hour or so and she improved quite a bit, though several of my friends, not into wine, remained reserved in their positive comments. I think we'll set the case I purchased aside for a few years and see what happens.

Wow. This is a story wine. First, if you try it w/o well decanting you'll really feel it's <84pt wine with astringent tannins and light body, but decanting and time will mellow the tannins and fill in the body to a more balanced mid-weight wine with nice acidity and sweetness and nice finish. On the nose there's a strong aroma, and I believe it's a a mix of cherries and black current (though if it's not bordeaux, I would think about lychee too). Definitely not a party wine, since it needs too much care to bring out its qualities. 89-90pts.

Paired well with roasted lamb shank with white beans. Forest floor with some berries in there. Solid acidity with tannins a little green and bitter. The richness of the lamb helped to keep the tannins at bay, but the wine was a bit more difficult on its own, after the meal.

Decanted 6 hours. Color: Deep purple. Nose: an earthy, musty aroma of black fruit and plums. Flavor: Black currant dominates the midpalate. Transient mineral clay flavors pass over the back of the tongue, there is big acid in back of throat and tons of astringent tannins which move back to front on the tongue. Some grapey flavors arrive on late on the front of the tongue. A finish of unripened fruit, really starchy fruit, and straight, unflavored tannins is pretty long. You'd really need bread to get rid of it. This wine is gonna grow up to be something someday. I really don't know how to rate this. I'm guessing in 5-10 years it's easily above 90 pts.

Having the same experience with the 2000 as Rob, I was not looking forward to this. However, this turned out to be not half bad. Nose of smoked meat, leather and currant, flavors much of the same. Nice tannin structure, but it tended to overwhelm the flavors a bit. I think that my expectations were so low for this that I was surpirsed it was pretty good. I would not buy any more, though as I have had much better for way cheaper.

After having a wonderful time dumping both the 1999 and equally horrible 2000 Coufran down the drain, I was a bit peeved to have the 05 come in this months KL wine club shipment. Fortunately, this one shows that even these guys can make at least a drinkable wine with the 2005 crop. The color is actually quite a nice deep and nearly opaque red with some raspberry liquor mixed with a gravelly minerality on the nose. Fruit doesn't show through as much on the palate as you would expect from the nose and considering that this is 85% merlot, I would think that it should definitely show much more fruit. As time went on it didn't change much and even started to thin out a little. Overall it is a drinkable wine but nothing special and I would not purchase it again. At least it didn't have to go down the drain.

Medelfyllig kropp med smak av körsbär och vanilj, klassisk Haut Medoc, strukturerad med relativt välintegrerade tanniner. Ganska kort eftersmak och ganska snål på frukt. Helt Ok men inte direkt någon sensation.

Youthful red and dark fruitiness with hints of cedar and earthy tones on the nose. Cherries and some truffles, almost burgundian. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and tight tannic structure, some oak and red fruits, and a dry, medium finish. This one has many years to go before reaching its peak.

the nose is absoultely gorgeous, of dark cassis and plum fruit, followed by that bordeaux funk but the palate is tight and tannic, not showing much anything except hinting at long long term potenital. This is a wine to try again in 24, 48, and 168 hrs as it may open up. If not i have no way to know how to score it 85? on potential drink in 20+ yrs, but who knows really?. 2005 appears to be a monster.

seemed pretty much the same at 24hrs. At 48hrs the nose has become more reticent but the mouth has opened up considerably showing a rich style wine with big plum and berry fruit, with a hint of sweetness and good structure tannins. Its amazing what a few days can do. Increasing my score to 88 and will save another glass out for a few more days.

89-90pts.
