Decanted for several hours in the AM and drunk that afternoon.
A stony nose with some early petrol and strong prophyrrhic notes of Hermannshohle. Soil more than fruit driven at this point. It's powerful but in harmony. On the palate, this is like someone distilled liquid out of Hermannshoehle rocks. It has breadth and depth, is ripe and intense yet not heavy, with the fruit yellow and fruit salad leaning. Some bitters notes add complexity. Expansive and full bodied but with plenty of acidity to carry it. Intensity with poise. A wine of contemplation. Interestingly the last glass left in the a decanter for 30 plus hours was the best glass, with a seamless mineral water level of clarity. I would say that this is at peak, but after the last glass the next day, I wonder if there is more to come. Terrific. Yum. 95

Sixth bottle from an eight bottle lot purchased in 2008. Pristine bottle. One of those magical moments when everything comes together, when you take the first sniff and the first sip and you know instantly - this is perfection. It happened today. A perfect bottle. It marries the authority of the Rheingau to the elegance of the Moselle, and it has the unmistakeable character of the Nahe. It is fresh and silky-smooth, there is profound minerally depth, the weight is perfect (12.5% ABV) and the balance between the energy of youth and the wisdom af age has reached its apogee. The aromatic complexity and definition is exemplary - a subtle whirlwind of smoke, fruit and flowers. Gentle bitters guide the long and creamy finish. I don’t think that any dry Riesling is capable of greater finesse.

Nahe^3: 10 vintages of Halenberg, Hermannshöhle and Felseneck + X (@Private location, Frankfurt): *** brief note from an extensive tasting *** Glass: Gabriel Gold Tasted blind. Bottle opened about 2-4h before, double decanted before serving. Most intense nose of this flight. Way more pressure and tension than the other wines, but with a similar balance. Very long and fruity finish. Potential for 5+ years. 93-94

For a 2005 unbelievable fresh comparable to the icon (vintage 2004). I chose the wine all other people guessed blindly 2013, 2011 and 2011. zitrus dominated, some yellow stone fruits. They guessed Pfalz, Rheingau and Rheinhessen. 95-96. At least 5-7 more years ahead

Slight signs of seepage, level 2cm below the cork. A lovely Grosses Gewächs, with excellent Nahe typicity, but not shining as brightly as previous bottles. Is it the bottle, or are its advancing years the cause? Retaste - three bottles left.

This is elegant and round with lychee, peach and pear nuances. But it lacks acidity and precision and as a result is less interesting than I expected. A pretty rather than a profound wine.

has well developed since last time about 2 1/2 years ago. well balanced, rich, slightly oily. pineapple, passion fruit. I had half of the bottle for about one week in the fridge, no signs of oxidation, maybe even better. Will get better, 94p for now.

Good, not great. Better as it warms, but this has lost a little something in the last couple years, in my opinion. Maybe a less than perfect, or maybe muted, bottle.
Nose was all gasoline/rubber at first, gradually gave way to classic German Riesling tropical fruit and citrus aromas over a few hours. On palate, after just opened (and at cellar temp, 50-55 degrees) seemed both thin and low on acid, then transformed into something awesome after half a day of air and at room temp- delicious, concentrated but not too weighty tropical fruit and green apple flavors, the kind of electric acidity I love in great Riesling, a super long finish that creeps into every corner of your mouth. Off dry. If you are opening this now, I suggest you give it at least a few hours of air and drink it just below room temp, at 60-65 degrees.

92 pts

Electric green-tinged white gold, intense but very youthful; distinctive fruit salad character on the nose, just a hint of spicy wax, mineral depth, many nuances; very flowing palate, ripe acidity, mature but energetic, subtle bitters, relaxed; very good length. Rarely does a wine achieve such a marriage of power and finesse, of weight and elegance.

clean yellowish to light golden colour, still maturing and in the early days of its drinking window. after opening this wine has minerality, good fruit, lesser acid, the components not yet finally placed but everything is there and expressing itself on the palate. After having let breathed the wine for two hours in the bottle in the fridge, minerality overlaps fruit and acid and dominates on the palate. Will wait until opening the next bottle, 92 for now

Really needs air, for the first hour it shows some nice ripe peach and berry fruit, but it's oddly soft and diffuse and lacking acid. Eventually though the wine fills out and firms up and acidity turns up, picking up all sorts of intense secondary nuances in the process, turning more citrusy and earthy and pine foresty and floral. This is a big, rich wine, but the extract is amazingly soft and silky, and the length is outstanding. GGs are a category of which I've been somewhat skeptical (I tend to prefer the pradikat wines), but this is a compelling example to the contrary.

Brilliant. Fresh and subtle notes of chalky dried pineapple, verbena, chamomile, and very bright sweet white tropical flowers grace this beauty. The superb dry and lingering finish, following the classy and full yet light mid-palate, is what sets this apart and makes this wine work. Better the second night, this is a true keeper, and just starting its run. Perfectly balanced and cohesive, this shows the strengths yet to come with the 05 vintage - strong, perfectly ripe fruit, with the lithe yet substantial structure and class it needs. Gorgeous.

Kelly’s visit, two nights of great wines - Burgundy and Rhone (Marks duckhouse, Falls Church, Va): Sweet yellow fruits, crème bruless, anise, limestone and a hint of burnt sugar. Some spritz that blew off, oily texture masks strong mineral expression, some sweetness via layers of concentrated fruits but the finish is quite dry. It reminds me a bit of ZH Brand but a bit more mineral and a bit more dry. It would be a nice wine to try at home over a few hours, perhaps with a simple roasted chicken.

Fantastic from the first sip, and this just keeps getting better over a couple of hours with air. A vividly smoky aroma leads into a palate that's incredibly complex with layers of stone, ripe fruits, higher toned floral/herbal elements and more mature smoky and creamy notes all coming together into a seamless whole. The balance is incredible, a broad, powerful palate presence that still comes across remarkably light and precise, and great length.

Tightly wound and quite unyielding at first. This shows very little aromatically, hinting at yellow fruited flavours and stony minerality while giving the sense that there's a lot in reserve. With some air it opens up, developing a pretty floral and spicy fragrance while more fruit and mineral flavours emerge in the mouth. There's impeccable balance and even in this closed, muted phase, a sense of remarkable purity and length. Hands off for now, but this should be amazing with some time.

Pale lemon gold with green glints. Damn this is good, and much better and tighter than the fruit bomb it was on release. The wine's minerality is at the fore now alongside mid-palate notes of lemon oil and persimmon. This is by any measure a superb bottle of trocken riesling and one of the reasons why my "dry" riesling dollars are heading more to the Nahe these days than to the Haut Rhin.
