Pretty nose of plums raisins. Dense with medium acidity; figs, plums, pencil shavings, forest floor; grippy tannins still amd oak on the ending. Very good, still tight in my opinion but not sure this will improve much. Went great with Cheshire Appleby and Montgomery Cheddar.

Very nice wine, but did not live up to my memory of it. Cork was pristine. Intense color and concentration. Still has the leather and tobacco that made it interesting a few years ago, but the acid correction has begun to stand out in an unnatural sort of way for a wine this age. It will probably survive for many more years, but it’s not clear that more time will pay many dividends.

I’d enjoyed this back in 2010 and remember it being exceptionally good, at a young age. At 15 years, this has developed lots of nuance and complexity. Dark ruby, with very slight bricking and garnet colored rim. Decanted and enjoyed with applewood, smoked chicken and baked macaroni and cheese. As I’ve noticed with other Barossa Shiraz’s this displays telltale, terroir based aromas of smokey rubber, black tar, and charred meat with floral and black fruits in the background. Wonderful deep, and concentrated blackberry, dark cherry, black licorice, espresso, and wet herb flavors, which seem to transition toward red with the food on the palate. Tannins and acid are well integrated but definitely linger in the background indicating this could cellar for 2-4 years without missing a beat. Long lasting finish which seems to hang for an eternity. Impressive

Concentrated wine that manages to be nimble. Terrific range of flavors across the palate from floral and eucalyptus notes through layers of lightly peppered dark flesh fruits to touch of wet stone.
Did a long slow ox then in the decanter for 2+ hours. Healthy middle age, a few good years ahead.

Decanted for 1 hour. Initial taste on opening was big, tight and grippy. After the decant it was much more approachable. Typical Aussie flavors without being overdone or jammy/sweet. Coats the palate. Would be great with a steak! Fun times with Rod.

I loved this wine for years and the '03 is a perfect example of why. It ages well and holds it's structure. Loads of berries and jam. Herbs & spice with sage and cinnamon taking first chair. It is soft and supple and is drinking very well at this point. So I why do I say "loved"? Mostly because some Penfold's marketing puke (a term I got called in my biz when I started) saw the numbers and 2x'd+ the retail price. I instantly stopped my 10 year vertical. To their credit they finally figured out their error and the price has retreated to some degree (can you spell inventory?) so there may be hope yet.

The nose was rich with bakery fresh blackberry tartlet sweetness, followed by holiday spice, dark chocolate, floral notes and the slightest hint of undergrowth. On the palate, it was smooth as silk with weighty textures, delivering notes of blackberry jam, cinnamon, herbs and a hint of citrus peel, which added great contrasts. The finish was soft, redolent of red and black fruit with a bitter twang and hints of tannin, still lingering, yet not impeding to this wonderful finale.

Nice aromatics with a very tasty and vibrant finish. A little out of balance, but I will forgive this due to the complexity and power of the wine. A superb syrah from a very hot vintage in Australia. Hard to believe this is 10 yrs old.

Dark ruby. Initially eucalypt and blueberry, then after aeration, more savoury aromas of cumin and red pepper are revealed. Dark chocolate, coffee, plum and cherry jam on the nose. Full-bodied with soft tannins, fresh fruit and a medium to long aftertaste, being the wine's only trait preventing it from being perfect. Still young, might improve with further cellaring.

Absolutely amazing especially for an off year in Australia. It took us 2 nights and several hours to sip this one down. Every taste was absolute heaven. Australian Shiraz isn't normally to my taste but this was drinking beautifully. Decanted an hour and then consumed during the last three courses of a six course at Mas in the West Village. Blackberry and plum stew, dried fig with minor aromas of black licorice and menthol. This is a dense, enormously rich wine but simultaneously subtle and refined on the palette, possibility as a result of integration at this stage in its maturity. Very long finish (in contrast to what has been reported in other notes). Blew away the 2005 Sea Smoke pinot we opened with. Thanks JK for sharing these.

Blind Tasting Australia: Elegance, intensity and value? Absolutely! (The V.I.P. Table): The 2003 RWT opened up with cherry fruits, dusty chocolate cocoa powder, rock dust, licorice and animal fur on the nose. The palate started tight but turned plush and velvety with time in the glass as flavors of red fruits, black pepper, dark chocolate and leather strap washed across the palate. The finish was long and refreshing.

Nose: Ultra-pure, ultra-focused aromas of blackberry, soy-sauce, deep earth, and some fresh herb. Wonderfully high quality.
Taste: Heavily concentrated, multi-layered, SERIOUSLY well made Shiraz in an extremely backward stage. Ripe, deep fruit on the attack, wide complexity mid-palate, into a finish buried in huge yet supple tannin. Acidity matches, but this is a tannin-driven wine. An enormous Barossa Shiraz that needs to be purchased....then buried in one's cellar for 10 years. Built for the long haul, it will surely disappoint folks looking for a big, forward extraction hero. Patience manditory.

Deep purple, almost black, in colour this RWT is still very young. The nose is still closed, but was showing great fruit character, capsicum, white pepper and cigar box. The palate was full with big tannins and an acidic backbone. Will be beautiful in a few years.

Tasted unblinded at the Vintage Wines, Ltd. wine bar. Bright disc. Black robe with purple rim. Clean but restrained nose, showing black fruit and vanilla. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium-to-high acidity and massive coarse tannins (which overwhelm the fruit). Short, tart finish. Not pleasant at this stage. I am concerned about the unripeness of the tannins. This wine may ultimately merit a higher score, although the chance of a lower score is equally likely.

An Evening of Aussie Legends to Inaugurate Our New Wine Tasting Group (A Relatively Secret Room in Buellton, CA): One of my favorite of the Penfold bottlings, and this one did not disappoint. Yeasty nose of red fruit, black pepper and a bit of coffee. More red fruit than black, spicy and potent. A bit backward and youthful, with ample structure to make this one to revisit in 5+ years, if I am so fortunate.
