Incredibly complex nose of leather, roasted meat, ripe and evolved red fruit… Tannins are super silky and complex, we thought it was the Echezeaux 2002!! Very very nice wine!!

More in line with the Rhys 2006--dark, slightly cloudy, rich ripe nose, hint spices, concentrated macerated berry fruits, soft, caressing mouthfeel in line with '05; Just a bit heavy-handed but really enjoyed this. Would be great with a heavy sauce thing or Beouf Bourgognonne. at Best in the Park BBQ. EWG

Woah, how'd this happen? This is wide open and ready to drink. There is a big punch of funky earth as soon as the cork pops. We drank this together with the 2019, which was pretty well advanced for its age, but the difference between precociousness and actual time in the bottle was apparent through the paler, rustier color here as well as its more streamlined, slender figure, having been polished down nicely these last 15 years in the cellar. The personality on display here is more mineral than animal, in contrast the '19, loaded with stony earth but not at all austere because the tannins have been polished down nicely too - wasn't expecting a 2005 Corton to come out to play so soon, but it's easy and engaging and you don't have to reach to get anything out of this.
Deep and dark core. Quite robust and muscular in its own way. Bold, dark fruit flavours and forest floor elements combine in a medium/full palate of depth and width. The tannins are broad and could possibly integrate further with time. A bold expression tonight. Would like to see it again in 5-10 years or more.

Decanted 1.5 hr. Medium darkness, orange hue, long slow legs, on 👃 very perfumy with roses, dried prunes, nectarines, apricot, leather, peppercorn, dry forest floor. Dry, medium body, mouth watering, juicy raspberries, licorice, cashews, medium tannins, medium/high burn on throat. Beautiful to drink now — but should improve with more time in cellar.

This was in fantastic shape! The nose initially leaps from the glass to reveal a plethora of funky and earthy notes of red fruit (i.e., cherry, strawberry), cassis, hickory, and game. Open and lush immediately, and only gained weight and depth with extended aeration. Little tannic/acidic structure remains, just mouthful after mouthful super expressive, sweet red fruit. With time, the cherry and strawberry notes are joined by pomegranate, spice, and brown sugar. Impeccable!

55F since release - evolved clear transparent dulling ruby amber - large crust thrown against dependent surface of bottle - this wine used to be quite darkly pigmented - soy balsamico iron rich soil with decayed organic matter - velvety rich mouthfeel - convergence with other evolved reds from esteemed terroirs on display - having just recently returned from Sicily and a necessary exploration of old pre-phylloxera or otherwise nerello mascalese in this wine there is a consilience of characteristics. While a study of evolved wine there is a measure of fresh florality. If I search real hard there is a hint of roasted red plums deep in the background. From my following of a case of this it is ready to go - I see no reason to wait if you are sitting on a few.

Popped'n poured for Bastille Day at La Piquette in D.C., along with a 2014 Fevre 1er Cru Vaulorent Chablis and a 2017 Henri Boillot Clos de la Mouchère. For a 2005, and a Corton to boot, this surprisingly open. A lovely wine.

Dark fruit, grilled meat and black olives. Earthy and complex. A zing of acidity cuts through the dense full bodied fruit, giving this very nice balance. Superfine but assertive tannins will give this plenty of longevity.

One of 3 reds for the New Year's Eve festivities with a small group of friends, along with an '03 Montrose and an '01 Phelps Insignia.
The two cabs were decanted, while this was opened prior to dinner. While still quite youthful, for an '05, this was drinking incredibly well already, if still mostly primary. But beautiful note and lovely red fruit flavors, with little of the austerity I might have expected from an '05 Corton. This was drinking so well, that I plan on pulling the full case out of storage and starting to work thru it.

Dark, black core with tawny red rim. Rich, blood, violets, blueberry, grilled meat, tar. Plush, with good structure and a smooth finish. Seems in a good place for fruit, complexity and structure, so drinking well. Lovely rich ripe fruit, darker types of cherry and brightness of damson zest. A little sherbet, but the earthiness is stronger. Brawny, good intensity, and length.

Red fruited nose showing a hint of alcohol. Tart, mineral inflected palate with good energy and depth, med+ length or more. Not quite the depth of a grand cru but very nicely balanced, elegant. A good showing of a delicate hand in this vintage.

Zoom tasting with the wine group - Burgundy (Zoom): Tasted blind. Light ruby, slight bricking; elegant red fruited nose, spices, a bit of musk but only to add complexity, nice depth; palate is light-medium bodied, again lovely red fruits, just very faint bitterness at first which resolves, nice depth; finish is solidly medium length. This is lovely, and in character reminds me of an elegant NSG such as Boudots, possibly at 1er cru quality level. On reveal, a lovely Corton, and a superbly balanced Burgundy. 92+

Bouchard's 2005 Le Corton is unusual in that it shows a softer, more accessible side of this vintage that has predominantly produced broad shouldered yet austere wines. The nose shows black & red cherry, raspberry, earth, and Chinese five spice. Sweet, silky palate.

An interesting wine which evolved a lot over two nights. Not a showy wine. Quite pale colour. Autumnal, leafy, undergrowth characteristic rather than obvious fruitiness. A little sweetness mid-palate but mostly dominated by firm though fine tannins on the finish. It reminded me of a barolo in profile and to some extent taste. Perhaps a bit stern to ever be the life of the party, but a cerebral wine that has a lot more to give.

This was Jim’s bottle, opened alongside my ‘05 Drouhin Corton Bressandes. I’m not a big Bouchard fan, as I find their wines to be oaky. Here, the oak is not too prominent on the palate, although it’s definitely there with brown spice notes. This is soft on the palate, accessible already, although not especially complex. There are some beef stock notes on the palate, along with cherry fruit, but the palate is a big murky. This wine is approachable, a bit murky and not especially complex. In Bridgehampton.

Burgundies with Friends: Aromas of raspberries, plums, smoky charcoal and peppered beef notes. Grippy, young, tannic, compact raspberry and cherry fruit laced with smoky, beefy notes. Dense but delicious, needs time to smooth out a bit

Surprisingly primary with robust body in the first hours after opening. The fruit was deep, but still squarely in the red forest fruit area more towards the raspberry and cherry. I decided to gas it and keep some overnight and that paid some dividends in softening up to show more nuance, better body, and the mineral base that was covered up the first night. I think probably 5-8 more years to get to more accessibility upon opening.

Deep ruby colour. Dark fruits, earthy scented, tar and dark spice, hint of cherry stone spice, youthful. Gorgeous. Silky but with a powerful finish. Builds nicely, tannins are refined but strong. Lovely ripe dark and red fruit. The dark spice and earthy edge are delicious. Structure is youthful, many years ahead, but drinks nicely now.

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind (Chicago, IL): Tasted double blind. Black and red cherry with lots of spice and tannins, this clearly needs more time, but still seemed older than a 2005. I haven't had this wine since shortly after release, and was surprised when unveiled. Probably a "90 point" wine today, but clearly with upside.

Dark red, earthy hue developing. Rich ripe spicy nose. Cherry stone zest and a hint of earth, light and refined but deeply fragrant. Smooth and ripe, a hint of earth, red berries dominate, flavours broad and mouth filling. Tannins ripe and furry. Delicious drinking, mature, still nicely structured.

wow, this wine had power and I think is likely to improve significantly, the nose was pungent and nice, not fruity or spicy, rather a little rubber ball and some vegetal (not bad, rather kinda good vegetal), palate similar with strong red candied cherry and significant vegetal (good, not bad) notes, I think these may tone down and let the fruit mellow a bit and this will be fantastic, felt like a real ager for sure, would love to try this in 15 - 20 years, full bodied but not a fruit bomb at all

We had heard great things about Nurdin Topham, the young British Chef with a splendid resume including learning under Chef Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons...one of our favourite restaurants in the world. Finally, we visited...OMYG!
Dark, intense red on the eye. More of what we were seeking! Aromas of ripe berries, some spice and nuttiness and pleasant whiff of sous bois. Bingo!!! Voluptuous palate, great fruit and acidity balance and elegant structure. Long lingering finish. Oooweebaby, we needed to smoke something after that luscious and salacious sip...sadly, we do not partake, but the food was wonderful so we were good to go! A stunning way to end a perfect event!!!

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This is a pleasant surprise. Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe crunch red and black fruits, flowers, strong mineral presence, cremini mushroom and limestone. Excellent concentration, generous fresh crunch red fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and long clean finish. This very youthful wine is very pure and mineral. It is really enjoyable but can still benefit at least ten more years of cellaring if you love sous bois like I do. Wonderful against some tough expensive competition.

I tasted this wine upon release and was totally amazed. I promptly purchased a case and it promptly shut down. Finally, it is emerging from its shell. What a bright and inviting ruby color. The nose is extremely alluring with red and blue berries, chocolate, lavender, loam and traces of gun powder. Medium bodied with an intense, almost electric mouthfeel. The bright acidity clarifies and propels the roasted plum, ripe cherry and wild strawberry flavors. These are wedded to meaty, peppery and earthy undertones. The tannins are softening nicely. The balance and length really are quite special. This already gorgeous wine will be a downright knockout in three to five years! 94+ points.

consumed over two days. Day one: popped and poured without airing. Medium crimson in color. On the nose quite reserved, as to be expected for this vintage at this stage. Some dark berry scents, earthy smells and medium pronounced oak. Violets and other floral elements in the background. Gripping, dry tannins, giving structure, but making this not very approachable. Day two: The air time has done wonders! The fruit smells have taken over, lovely black currant and raspberry, definitely dark berries. Strong floral scents, as well, again mostly purple violets. The oak has retreated to the extent that it plays a supporting role now rather than a dominant one the day before. It delivers wonderful leather and burnt toast aromas and taste. The dry tannins have mellowed out some but still are present. Nice underlying acidity, all in all very balanced.
This is a brooding beauty in the making! If the tannins mellow out over time this should be beautiful in 3-5 years from now. If consumed before I would recommend at least a 4-5 hour decant.

An excellent 2005 from Bouchard that doesn't disappoint. Distinctly spicy and loaded with cherry fruit notes, as well as unmistakable notes of smoked meat. Occasional notes of roast beef and smoked ham, even! Soft tannins make it quite drinkable now, but is also a great candidate for cellaring. Quite elegantly put-together. Really, a very nice wine.

A Sampling Of Burgundy: Not going to say "disappointing" because it is a very nice wine. Tasted right after the Enfant Jesus. Deep red color. Sweet spice, earthy with cherry and minerals on the nose, but austere, as if it was holding something back. Good complex fruit on the palate though it definitely was a bit watery and lacked something on the mid-palate. The tannic structure was more pronounced in the Enfant Jesus and to me, suggests that the Enfant Jesus may be a longer haul wine than this. However, this may be shut down right and is holding something back.

Gorgeously perfumed nose of raspberry, cherry, licorice, raspberry liquer. This is generous and open face, plush. It gained complexity with air, but the purity of the fruit is almost incredible. It finishes with fine grained tannins and the flavors linger. I love the ripeness, the persistence. A modern style, or at least just ripe and fruit-driven. This is the type of burgundy that turns people into believers: how can something this soft be so powerful? Lovely and enthralling, and approachable now with decanting.

2/23/2007: Henriot Trade Tasting - Winter 2007 (from memory) - Astonishing richness and exquisite balance sets this beauty apart from most of the uniformly excellent and rich Bouchard Pere et Fils '05s. Very pure, big and rich black and red fruits that compliment the well detailed, complex mid-palate. persistent, detailed, and extended finish. Depth of mouthfeel/texture is astonishing. Even though this monster seemed to be giving it all up, one had the feeling there was still enormous energy and depth of flavors in reserves, however odd that sounds. the most impressive of the Bouchard red grand crus at this tasting. if the '05 corton lives up to the impressions it gave, it might be a momument relative to the appellation. but who will live to see this wine full mature? enormous potential.

Drank better than I expected at price point. First time enjoying this wine. Seems like it still has quite a bit of life in it. Opened nicely as evening went on.
Only have 1 magnum left, may hunt down some more, if I can find the right price!

wow, this wine had power and I think is likely to improve significantly, the nose was pungent and nice, not fruity or spicy, rather a little rubber ball and some vegetal (not bad, rather kinda good vegetal), palate similar with strong red candied cherry and significant vegetal (good, not bad) notes, I think these may tone down and let the fruit mellow a bit and this will be fantastic, felt like a real ager for sure, would love to try this in 15 - 20 years, full bodied but not a fruit bomb at all

A fantstic wine. I had the wine for seven years in my cellar and it's starting to drink very well. Strong and smooth.

94+ points.

Lovely nose. Expressive. Pinot fruiits, violets. Palate is intense but so fine as well. Lovely balance here. Spice, red and black fruits, savoury characters. Entering a nice window it seems.

Drank while on vacation in DR, so limited notes. Recall maturity, some barnyard, complexity, reasonable delicacy (no rusticity), resolved tannins, medium body, sufficient fruit, good balance. Right in the drinking window.

From jeroboam. Lots of depth and complexity on the nose, smoky oak, dark fruit, minerality. Quite powerful And pretty closed on the palate, firm tannins giving lovely texture, fresh with fine length. Too young now but very promising. 92-93+

Tasted blind: Clear ruby in color. Nose reminded me of burnt rubber. Dominated by quite a bit of acidity. Overall elegant and I expect this wine to become better with age. At the moment just too much tar, rubber and smoke flavors.

consumed over two days.
Day one:
popped and poured without airing. Medium crimson in color. On the nose quite reserved, as to be expected for this vintage at this stage. Some dark berry scents, earthy smells and medium pronounced oak. Violets and other floral elements in the background. Gripping, dry tannins, giving structure, but making this not very approachable.
Day two:
The air time has done wonders!

Burgundy Tasting (Philadelphia): muted nose of sweet spice, black cherry and blackberry. medium tannins underlie a sweet red cherry palate, with notes that reminded me of a Blow Pop. medium finish. very black on the nose, very red on the palate. might be shut down right now, it did not show as well as i would have expected.
