2015 Château Cantenac Brown

  • Château Cantenac-Brown Margaux GCC 2015 (14% ABV)
    61% CS / 39% M
A dark and powerful wine with still slightly roughening tannins, lots of cassis and liquorice on the nose, also cassis on the palate, some black cherries and blackberries, noble wood. The floral notes otherwise typical of a fine Margaux may be missed. The overall impression is more like a massive Napa Cabernet than a delicate Margaux. Nevertheless, a good wine to drink, especially with food! Nothing to criticise except a little more typical Margaux style!
    93(-94)
Second day: a little bit more flowery notes in the long long aftertaste. 94

  • One of the best C. Cantenac Browns I've tasted in a long long time. Aeration: 45min. Elegant balance, soft mouthfeel, low acidity, dark fruits, amazing graphite, ink, and subtle licorice. Pure opulence with a medium body. High recommend. Have a few more bottles left would say drink now until 5 years tops. Not sure it will last longer.

  • Very nice. Drinkable. Nose is still very primary. Needs still time to integrate better, tons of oak and chalkiness. I usually like wines on the younger side but this one is a big HOLD. 92+++

  • Over a year since my last bottle.

Happy to report this is coming along slowly and steadily. Still tannic and needing time to stitch together some loose edges, but quite delicious after 3 hours of air. Unlike my last bottle, this was better on the second day.

    Be patient.

  • Drinking great with 2 hour decant.

  • Quarin. 16.75 (93) points. Assemblage : 61 % cabernet sauvignon, 39 % merlot.

  • Wine seems to have all the stuffing but needs time to relax and shine. I would give it along decant if you want to drink now otherwise wait at least 2 years.

  • OMG what have I done! Fantastic and huge but balanced and incredibly structured wine as have been all the 2015 Margaux but I don't know what possessed me to open one of these now when most of the vintage that drank so well early is now taking a nap. I bought a bunch of 2015 Randomly when I saw them after we learned how 2015 was "the year of Margaux" and only bought a few of these so I hadn't tasted this one yet and an urge overcame me. Awesome wine, explodes out of the initial opening with all kinds of Margaux typical aromas and a lovely mouthfeel but then the tannins creep in and block a lot of the flavor and are mildly chalky. The finish is too long to assess due to the tannins but it's LONG. The first taste was actually the best so far and I suspect no amount of air will be adequate, only time in the cellar. Was a mistake to open but I am enjoying the mistake the best I can and wishing I had bought more and note to self: SAVE THE OTHERS FOR AT LEAST 5 -10 YEARS> 95++

  • Intensely aromatic, deep almost garnet color. Black fruit, cigar box. Delicious!

  • Decanted and drank over the next 6 hours. This is very tight still. It barely budged for the first 3 hours, then gradually showed its substantial fruit and secondary notes, but was somewhat overshadowed by strong tannin the entire time. I'll stick with my previous score of 94 but could drop to 90 if consumed without adequate preparation.

  • Not there yet. Saving half for another day.

Day 3: Left the wine in the decanter for two days. Very much cab sav now. It's not like the bottles bought at home. Whether it needs more time or something else is the matter I can not tell.

Bought 12 bottles from a private dealer and I feel very lucky living in a country where the stateley owned Systembolaget have monopoly. They really keep me safe from fraudsters.

This in my bottle? 88? But not sure what is it.

  • After 24 hours of air. Day 2. Day 1 impressions below, too.

Deep purple core and scarlet rim. Clear. Nicely concentrated with drippy legs. 5

Sweet black fruit and plum nose. Beautiful floral notes on day 1 are more subdued on day 2. A taste of vanilla and licorice. Easy on the nose with heat lessening on day 2. 12

Easy drinking! Palate confirming nose on day 1. Didn't really hold up on day 2. Really thinned out after all the air. Might be an early bloomer and ready for prime time around year 10-12. 16

More enjoyable after 2-3 hours of air on day 1. Not edgy or harsh in any way. Really nice. 8

  • Yet another excellent Margaux from this lovely vintage. This was medium-bodied, a bit light on its feet compared to the Malescot St. Exupery I had the night before. Everything was in the right place - quite delicate and expressive. Got it for $46 all told upon release and wish I got more - great value for how it's showing.

  • Opulent, lush, deep, dark, and concentrated, there is a wealth of ripe, dark plums, black cherries, blackberries, tobacco, espresso, cocoa, and flowers from start to finish. This is quite good now, but it is only going to improve from here. Drink from 2025-2050.

  • Blind tasted in a flight of four.

A: rust colored edge around ruby center.
N: mainly savory: oregano, clam chowder, chorizo, bacon, smoked honey ham; below that is the fruit: black currant; also black pepper, leather. Beautiful nose.
P: cherries, black pepper, graphite, a bit too watery, tannins suggest this needs a few years.
    F: hardly any finish.

This is not bad Bordeaux, but apart from the nose, it’s not great either. The wine is a bit dead. I wonder if our bottle is flawed because I can’t believe the 98 pts scores I see here. At $75 it’s not badly priced, but there are too many better alternatives at this price point. It’s miles above the 2018 though, which is awful.

  • Decanted for 4 hours, did a small taste after initially opening and it was a bit tannic but still enjoyable, but giving it the decant definitely opened it up and softened the tannins. Nose of blackberry, plum and some cassis, didn't notice as much floral character as I would expect from a margaux. Flavors were similar with some red fruits hinting, but was largely dark fruited. Tannins were mild, mild acidity. Overall this was very nice and I think is fine to drink with a bit of a decant. Have 2 more bottles and will probably wait 5 years before opening another. This is quite fruit forward at this stage and is a bit lush for a Bordeaux.

  • Debated with myself for a long time whether to open this up or not. In the end the heart won over the mind and what a beautiful wine this was.

Deep vibrant purple colour with beguiling scents of boysenberries, cranberries, blue flowers and graphite. Alcohol jumped out as it was an unexpected 14% ABV but a two-hour decant helped the vapors fade and round out the tannins. Palate was a mix of red and dark fruits, black tea, dried figs, cedar and some hints of warm spice. Mouthfeel was luscious and vibrant with perfect weight. Excellent medium to full body with tannins playing nicely for such a young wine and excellent acidic balance making it great to sip on its own, or to elevate a meal.

Can't say enough good things about this bottle. Only regret is opening it a bit too early but it didn't hurt much and happy to have experienced it now. Give it another 2-3 years before opening and enjoy it over the next decade.

  • My first from my new order from France. It's a beautiful wine but I know it can show better than today. Probably around 94 today. Wait a year or two and it will show much better. Much, much better.

  • My third bottle and world class again. So good I ordered 6 new ones direct from France. And sold 6 to my friends.

  • Beautiful dark ruby color. In the nose lots of different dark and red berry notes. Fruit driven palate with lots of red cherries, raspberries, young plum, blueberries and some soft cedar notes. Medium (+) bodied with a medium acidity. Tannins are not fully integrated yet but they feel very elegant and harmonious. Great complexity and a deep structure for such a young wine. The finish is long and savory.
This is definitely on of the best or even the best Cantenac Brown I ever had although it’s still very young. I definitely need to buy more from this vintage. This beauty will age absolutely gracefully and will be enjoyable over at least the next 15 years. Drink from 2026-2035.

  • This is a absolutely brilliant wine. One of the best I've had. Starting to get some secondary notes now and the depth is outstanding. Tobacco, boysenberries and superb elegance. Will last.

  • Strawberry, raspberry, plum, leather, fruitful nose; supple, good balance, medium length, well-structured, not exceptional, but a fine and fairly accessible claret that will continue to improve with age

  • A bit of oak peeking through when first decanted but quickly aligned into a wonderful scented Margaux. Primary, but showing a lovely dark fruit core that is both enticing as well as light on its feet. Great future ahead.

  • I’m pleased to see Cantenac Brown getting ambitious and there’s a lot to like in the wild raspberry, plum, ganache, espresso, slightly floral nose but there’s too much heat here on the nose and palate. This is labeled at 14% and it's conspicuous. Several Margaux showed excess ABV in 2015 only to be subsequently corrected in 2016; I don't know if that's the case here but I hope that the balance can be improved as the current team hones their idea of Cantenac Brown. Followed closely for 5 hours and then revisited at 24 hours.

  • Loads of potential for the future 93-96. Austere and needs air and or time. Great example of what 2015 has to offer. Hold or long decant.

  • its why we drink French wines - taste the wine made from the fruit - and not wine masked by layers of fruit....

excellent pairing with bone-in steak - the wine had soft tannins and even with 14% alch it was mild and very good and a pleasure to sip and enjoy. We nursed the steak - which was marinated for six hours prior to grilling it in a skillet on a gas oven - in order to enjoy the wine longer; - and we nursed the Bordeaux in order to enjoy the medium done steaks!!!...a perfectly paired combination led us to smile and fully appreciate the simple pleasures of life - especially in these trying times...

this Margaux is drinking very well now - why wait.....

  • Deep ruby

Nose: Huge violet note upfront, black plum, cedar, loam. Nicely perfumed.

Mouth: Cassis, melted blueberry, and black plum sauce are a satin wash, gliding over the palate weightlessly ahead of a backseat midpalate of liquid violet, bramble and loam. Tannins are completely melted into the wine, remaining powdery around a finish streaked by plum and tar.

Overall: Urbane yet delicate, the core of this is found in the extremely high level of polish: Neither hugely deep nor powerful necessarily, this leans on texture and mouthfeel to make the statement. A little bit more midpalate structure would be nice, however, there's plenty to like here and this is certainly approachable now. For fans of the fruit forward style especially. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot. Drink now - 2032.

    93.

  • Solid Bordeaux with staying power, as it’s still good and mostly unchanged on 3rd day. I see it in a 90-92 window. however side by side the 2016 Paradigm Merlot, the Paradigm is giving more flavor and purity of fruit on the palate. Just comparing as they are about the same price point, and I happen to have the bottles open at the same time.

  • Lots of spice, earthy notes throughout - takes about 2 hours to unwind this one. Surprisingly light mouth feel once it opens up. Developed into a very nicely balanced bottle about half way. Agree with others, lay this down for a while, 3-5 years. I wouldn't be surprised if thus this gains a point or even 2 with extra time in the cellar.

  • Beautiful colour, lively, petillant bubbles of dark cherry; pepper and dark fruit on the nose, suave and, although not particularly lifted, with some depth; palate at the moment, after 1-1/2 hours, just a little muted. Tannins and fruit well integrated, but there is a tad more acidity here than I would have liked.

I'll come back in two hours. At the moment, the wine, although attractive, is too just thin to warrant more than 91.

After 2-3 hours = a well integrated wine in texture, with pleasant mouthfeel, clearly the product of good wine-making skills and advanced technology, but with no particular depth or complexity. The fruit is largely at the front of the palate, drying out at the end.
I cannot understand the scores it has been receiving. I will move mine up to 92.
Try a bottle before you buy a lot.

A wind of change seems to be blowing through Bordeaux. I have some concerns.

  • PnP from a 375. Medium to dark purple. Pencil lead and fresh tilled gamey earth. Some fresh baked bread crust. Milk chocolate. Nose is a little funky on second inspection. On the palate it is medium to full bodied. Palate of dark crushed rasberries. Quite spicy on the finish. Tannins somewhat approachable; not overwhelming enjoyment young, but can last for quite some number of years from here on forward.

  • A wonderful wine, exceeding expectations. A complex and delicious burst of fruit right away. As the glass has time to breathe, the different layers come out. I’m a fan, and need to get more.

  • Pop and pour. Certainly needs some additional time in bottle and will probably gain a couple points when ready to drink in a few years. Think this will be 94-95 then.

  • Still very young. But, I opened this bottle to determine if I wanted a couple cases in the cellar for 10+ years from now.

This wine poured garnet red with strong legs on the swirl. There are restricted aromas of earth and musk in the background there are strong hints of blackberry and cedar. This is young, but there are hints of genius here. This is a medium to full body wine and after 5 hours of decanting the flavors unripe plum, blackberry and a hint of valilla blossomed. The finish was good and flaverful.

    Answer... this is a buy.

  • Dark caramelized cherries, plums, crème de cassis, espresso, and cocoa all flesh out in this indulgent and luxurious Margaux. 2015 doesn't cease to surprise me. You can feel the sophistication and richness on the smooth palate. Medium to full bodied with fine and well reserved tannins. It shows a vibrant finish with flair and style without feeling ostatentatious. It should age well for the next twenty years.

  • Med-full body with real depth. A previous taster thought this was over-hyped. So maybe... But I find it so refreshing after a bunch of Ca Cabs. It has the fruit sweetness, the body, and for sure the complexity... The oak on this is not overdone for me. I get cedar on top of fresh dark cherry herbal gorgeous fruit. Love it!

  • The 2015 Château Cantenac Brown is a total knockout and one of the finest values of the entire vintage. This gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend begins with striking aromas of dark berries, crème de cassis woven together with graphite, spring florals and traces of tobacco some together beautifully in the glass. This medium-full bodied red impresses with its wonderful structure along with outstanding depth and focus all leading up to the long polished finish. José Sanfins has certainly produced some incredible at Cantenac Brown, and the 2015 may be the best yet.

93 poeng. For nå. Spesielt anbefalt.

  • Tasted over three days. Well...this was either a dull bottle...which I do not believe to have been the case...or the wine is over-hyped. After recently tasting the 2014 vintage, this did not even show as well, being quite muddled. There is plenty of Margaux typicity (suavity), along with massive ripeness, but also copious oaky sweetness and a paucity of real substance, the type that merits 93+ point scores. I am disinclined to lay down the coin for another bottle, as nothing suggested this one was flawed. Disappointing to be sure. 90-91.

  • Super young... kind of pissed I opened it now. Wanted to catch a glimpse of 2015 to see if I should still be buying more at current release prices. It was really good, but just not ready for daylight right now. Keep resting until 2026 at least.

  • Tasted just after 2015 Brane Cantenac, this is also excellent, just a little less depth and intensity. Lovely fruit - perfumed and fine, spices, tobacco, floral notes. On the palate fresh, polished tannins, generous fruit. Very long. 93-94+

  • Decanted in advance for one hour. Decanted again at the restaurant. Waited half an hour.
Wonderful nose of red & black fruit with tobacco leaf.
    Somewhat closed on the palate.
Gradually opened up but not yet fully open by the time we finished.
Showed great poise. Red, blue and black fruits, some spice, nuanced seamless oak influence.
Manageable tannins, balanced acidity, long finish.
This wine strikes a great balance between power and finesse with lots of long term potential. Really nice!

  • Bordeaux 2015 in bottle (Zurich Arvi / Singapore UGCB): On of the stand outs in Margaux of this tasting. Great complexity here in the nose with cedar wood, cloves, dark fruit. Elegant, lush palate. Well done.

  • Just a few months of aging since this was last tasted has added more aromatic development. Now, you find dark, red fruits, chocolate mint, wet earth, flowers, espresso and a touch of mint. Full bodied, concentrated and silky, the wine paints your palate with fruit, velvet textured tannins and freshness. The wine sticks with you as it lingers on your palate.

  • Saturated deep ruby. Dark cherry and currant, cedar, some green pepper and savory herb. Medium+ body and acid. Creamy fruit, really polished tannins with a cedar and chocolate med+ finish. Really nice texture. Drinking well now, but I'm sure it will show even better in 5 years. Pick this up if you enjoy a creamy note to your wine balanced with acidity.

  • This is close to textbook Margaux. Richly fruited, but more than anything it's a pretty wine. Vivid red-fruit personality with the snappiness of red currants but also a sweet, saucy intensity. Nicely straddles the line between dense concentration and a lively freshness. Relative to some of the other Margaux I've had from the vintage, this is especially easygoing and friendly with a distinctive vibrancy to the fruit, but it's also got serious punch.

  • Aromas of red and black cherries, aromatic herbs, flowers and a touch of campfire can be coaxed out of the glass with some vigorous swirling. It is medium-bodied, with licorice, bittersweet chocolate and earth, good acidity and a moderately long, tannic finish. This is solid Margaux with a promising future ahead of it. For comparative purposes, both the Rausan Segla and Brane Cantenac are a couple of notches better. Still, this is quite good and will make for a nice drink in another decade or so. 92+.

  • A great 2015 Margaux for a great price. Cantenac Brown has put itself on a new level with this vintage: a dark brooding inky earthy wine cut with ripe berries and dried herbs. It's powerful, complex, and elegant. Needs time to develop, could perhaps end up a 94pt in the 2020s.

  • Union Des Grand Crus de Bordeaux Tasting of the 2015 Vintage, 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, nose of red cherry, black cherry, hint of oak, and earth, same on the palate, medium/big body, lovely, rich fruit, tasty, almost very tasty, probably better score in five years, surprisingly fairly fruit forward, atypical but terrific, nice Bordeaux, and a medium/long finish, worth the money to cellar.

  • Tasted at the Chicago UGC. Our surprise favorite of all the (incredibly strong) Margaux wines tasted. Lush fruit that really popped right off the bat, great acidity, ample tannin and a long, delicious finish with secondary earth/tobacco/leather notes. Simply put, this was a stunner. Drinking well now and looking forward to where it heads in the future.

  • Château Cantenac Brown, Margaux, 2015: The first time a kosher cuvée is made at this 3ème cru estate, and boy does it even outdo my expectations! Deep, inky royal purple in color. The nose slowly opens up, revealing notes of rich and ripe bramble, raspberries, cassis, dried flowers, freshly turned earth as well as hints of wild mushrooms and gunpowder. Full-bodied, brooding, concentrated yet not overly extracted and showing a great deal of Margaux's signature, meaning feminine finesse and elegance on the palate. The flavor profile reflects the nose very well, unfolding layers of exuberant, juicy black and red forest berries, pencil shavings, earthy minerals, black truffle, baker's chocolate with medium-low acidity and powdery tannins leading to a luxurious and seemingly endless finish. Mind-blowing. 14% Abv. Drink 2026-2043, probably longer. 95+

  • Assessing Bordeaux 2015 from bottle, part I; 11/2/2017-11/3/2017 (Bordeaux): The best Cantenac Brown I have ever had. I was not so impressed from barrel and probably misjudged it. Just bottled, it comes across as solid and delicious, showcasing both power and elegance. There is much breadth to this wine. Bravo!

  • Clearly one of the top vintages produced here ever, the wine is focused, ripe, deep, long and richly textured. There is volume, freshness, weight, complexity and character.

  • Mad about Margaux #bdx15 (Bordeaux, actually tasted during en primeur week): Roasted espresso bean aspect that is quite prominent on the aromatics precedes a palate full of pleasingly ripe tannin, but overall it lacks the juiciness and verve of the best Margaux wines – and it could use a bit more precision. Finish not quite drying, but just a touch hard. Time in barrel should soften that aspect. 89-91

  • Deep, rich violet-ruby in color with a complex array of scents ranging from espresso, violets, truffle, boysenberry, cassis and black cherry, this wine is sensuous, concentrated, opulent and balanced with a long, intense, mouthful of fresh, pure berries. The finish is impressive and lingers with a flurry of sweet, dark, red fruits and even darker chocolate. Easily the best wine since 2009. From 61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot, this wine reached 13.9% alcohol with a pH of 3.7 and is aging in 60% new, French oak barrels. The harvest took place from September 17 to October 8. Only 51% of the harvest was used in the Grand Vin. 94 – 96 Pts
