  • Doubled decanted for sediment of which there was next to none. Given that the light color that followed and made sense. Opened blind with wine group, no one got it right. Very good showing for this bottle. If like this one you can wait a few at least for the next one.

  • ESTG does Piedmont: Mmmm, juicy, nice structure, some caramel on the nose but overall quite enjoyable.

  • The most beautiful thing about this wine now, is the color. Its ultra light in body and bricked through and through. I looks like an old Burgundy from the 90's in the glass. So elegant and beautiful looking. The wine is definitely in decline mode with a faded fore palate, followed by stone fruit and a dry finish and a re-entry of petrol and a gentle fade...I have had this in a cold cellar since release and always thought it was ready to drink right at release...Feel like I held this too long for my taste. DRINK

  • Dark cherry, rose petals, red gooseberry jam, forest floor, light leather and a wiff of tar in the nose. The scents lean toward dried fruit rather than fresh dito. Garnet red in the middle, edges orange with a hint of brown. Dark dried fruit and forest, a little vanilla oakiness on the palate. Quite high acidity, very fine but pronounced tannins, way smoother than a few years ago. Maturing, very nice wine. Will be good for years, but I doubt it will get very much better than it is now.

  • Very light.

  • Mid red trending to brown. Quite developed colour and this carries through on a fairly uninspiring nose. Vanilla oak lingers over dusty red berries and mulch. The palate offers fairly limp red fruit and a short finish. Purchased from Eataly in Alba but possibly scalped or suffering from the format.

  • There goes the last one. No tears, as this was not going anywhere. I stick by the earlier notes, but wife agrees with the "thin" comment since our last bottle of this. Not sure why anyone would think this is traditional as there's some overt wood in the profile. Fontanafredda does make some nicer things, but they are a huge, non family outfit, and you see that in the pricing/oak use aspects. But, hey, somewhere between Barolo and Langhe nebbiolo, if a bit pricey compared to something like Vietti's Perbacco.

  • No formal note.
Just a nice, lighter Barolo, very fragrant, but thin on the mouth of fruit, decent fine tannins however. Went superb with chicken cordons. Give it two hours to open.

  • With black oyster mushroom risotto. Not a ton different from my note of last summer, the wood is less apparent and the hibiscus has also receded. This is easy drinking Nebbiolo and works nicely as a bridge between serious Barolo and Langhe Nebbiolo, esp as the wood influence has died down. One more bottle of this on hand.

  • Always true to old world character in a medium body. Firm, with sweet cherries, petrol, and nice tannic grip to drive the long finish. Drink

  • On the first day, this was very nice Barolo with ethereal rose aromas, spice, and maybe a hint of wood. Classic texture on the tongue, silken and lightly viscous. Flavors of cherry, rose hips, and just a hint of hibiscus, plus wood spice notes. Put the rest aside (we had already had a 23 year old Baga from Portugal the first night) and came back three days later. Folks, this isn't one for aging: It will flatten out over time. At what I paid, I will treat this like a midway point between Langhe Nebbiolo and more serious Barolo. By day three this was nice but nothing special, pretty much straight forward red wine.

  • Received as a gift and either it was stored wrong or I just didn’t like it. Gave it a couple hours air and no improvement. Reidel glasses with lasagna

  • This is such a great example of old school Barolo, with its feminine appearance, serious earth and tar scented nose, sweet charm from its rose bouquet, and the strength it packs during its firm and bold exit. Classic Barolo that is ready to drink for me, since I like getting pinched on the way out. Drink, Drink, Drink! Fantastic

  • Gambero Rosso Singapore 2017. Sniff, sip, spit. Only impressions.
Rounded ripe red fruit with earth. Spread out over the palate. Fine high tannins. Not as brooding or unapproachable as I expected of a Serralunga in youth. Age it yes, but doesn't need that long I feel.

  • Quite deep and dark yet still noticeably translucent pomegranate color. Surprisingly dry and savory nose with very little in the way of fruit, showing mainly dusty earth, smoke and some vague truffle tones. The wine is full-bodied, rich and somewhat warm on the palate with quite straightforward flavors of sweet black cherries, savory wood spice, some earthy tones, a little bit of tar, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of truffle. The structure relies mainly on the still very rough and grainy tannins, as the medium acidity feels rather low for a Nebbiolo. The finish is quite noticeably rough and grippy with long and somewhat austere flavors of tannic bitterness, stony minerality, some sanguine meaty tones, a little bit of sour cherry and a hint of savory wood.

A relatively uninteresting Barolo. The fruit department feels slightly underplayed in comparison to the more savory elements and the acidity feels somewhat inadequate in relation to the body. The tannins really could use some aging to achieve some sense of resolution, but I'm not entirely convinced this vintage is really built for the long haul. Perhaps the wine could benefit from another 3-5 more years, but this isn't going to be a classic Barolo aging for decades. The only commendable thing here is that the wine feels more traditional than modernist in style, which is a welcome change in Fontanafredda wines.

  • Light garnet. Decent nose. cherry, earth and mushrooms. Really tightens up. Very dry flavours and crazy tannins. Needs time.

  • Floral, herbal nose with soft red fruit. Rather forward and approachable on the palate. Fresh, slightly mineral with ripe tannins. Pretty good. 89-90+
