cheers - delicious, well balanced and aging beautifully, this is an excellent wine.....imo people are rating this low because of the low purchase price....for the similar reason that $300 yucky cabs are rated at 92+....Riojas are some of the best values you can buy, and this wine is a great example of that...a great vintage and a wine that will last for 20-30 years when it initially sold for under $15. That's crazy!

Yeah, didn't quite hit any heights with this bottle either, but I had no business opening it and drinking it just to have wine for the night. Cool and red, clean, but missing all the other fun. Will leave these alone for a short while and hopefully revisit at the end of the decade with summer tapas.

For a value bottle of wine, this is a good offering around the $11 dollar range (maybe more now since the time I bought the bottle, but not much more). Pop and pour and used a Venturi style aerator to pur the wine. Good nose that reminds me of entering a barrel room of a winery. Dried cherries and leather complemented with subtle tannins. Just enough dryness to enjoy without stripping the enamel of my teeth. The wine has a clean finish, and certainly pairs well with a gyro. Will buy again, already have other vintages.

With appropriate breathing (suggest a full afternoon for most European wines), this is just great. 6-7-8 years seems to be a sweet spot for most Spanish Rioja Reservas as was the case here. Maybe better end of year into next, but for now, lots of air will help smooth out any rough edges.

Pnp. Overripe cherry, fig, oak on the nose. A mouth filling medium + body full of dried red fruit. Actually surprisingly well balanced. Fruit and some tannin linger in a medium + finish. Appropriate concentration, depth, length, primary and secondary fruit, oak. Not over oaked like other Rioja reservas I've had. For $15, this is a buy every time. Driking well without a decant now and I would say drink through 2027.

This just keeps getting better. Give it a few hours of air and it delivers. Fruity plum flavors, soft tannin and mouthfeel with a medium/long finish. Restocked once and may again due to great price for a wine that has some age now and should continue to evolve, 3.75 stars.

$20 Spanish find 2015 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva. Mid-ruby; red fruit, cherry, tobacco, earth and wood nose; medium acids/tannins; layered, medium body; long slightly hot (14.5 alc.) woody finish; opens with air. w/beef stew. 15.5-16 UC Davis scale, 89-90 other scales.

Pretty decent taste profile. Fruit, tannins and body are all in sync. Alcohol is integrated and showing some age. Just ordered more for further cellaring. 3.5 stars now, but hoping for further development.

cheers - I've had many of these, but this is my first 2015 Marques. This was a tasting of the 2015 reservas Lopez de Haro against the Marques de Riscal. Both excellent, the Lopez is a bit more fruity and has a little spice, the Marques is more refined and more subtle with more vanilla oak. I prefer the Marques; I rated the Lopez 89.

Another excellent example of why Spanish wine punches above its weight. The nose is mildly fruity with an earthy overtone. On the palate it is very dry with some subtle fruit notes - more dried cherry than anything jammy. Some minerality, as well. The tannins are a bit forward, but could possibly soften with time. Based on past notes of other vintages, this wine will do well with cellaring. It's good now, but I think it will be great in about five years. And the value? Incredible. I paid on the high end at $19, with an average of $15-$16 a bottle most places.

Medium ruby with a little browning on the rim. Sour cherries, blackberries, pepper, vanilla, leather and hints of forrest floor on the nose. High acidity and tannins. Secondary flavours are more pronounced on the palette. Medium length finish. Can use more aging due to the astringent nature of the tannins. A noticeable dose of alcohol on the nose and palette. Except for the fruit, the wine became more expressive on the second day. There is a reduction of its fruity characteristic as well. Would give this another 3 years. A standard rioja reserva that will go better with food.
Medium ruby. Cedar, slightly boxy wood with fig and prune in the nose. Dark chocolate with fig, alcohol, brandy on palette. Very astringent, supportive acidity, very lean.
Would rate higher if the slightly taint-like wooden box notes weren’t so present. This was even after 1.5h of decant.
Ben called cheesiness, parmesan rind on the finish especially.

A nice light fruity bouquet greeted me, but the wine itself was a bit disappointing. Some nice cherry flavor up front but a very light body without much distinction. Not a bad wine, just not very interesting. We had it side by side with a 2016 Muga Reserva Rioja and the Muga had much more flavor and substance.

Was expecting great things with this 2015. Riscal reserva always brings bang for the buck. But this 2015 I can tell was overcropped. All the flavors are there. It’s a great vintage but it’s just thin. Fairly priced but not the slam dunk as past vintages.

No special tasting notes taken but the consumption of the last 4 bottles of this wines confirms: Very pleasant, above average maturity and complexity and always very reliable. Goes well with cold cuts, virtually any meat and cheeses that are not too creamy or have blue veins. You can buy this wine blind; when it leaves the producer's cellar it is already nicely mature.

This is lovely, and captures all I want in Rioja at this level. This, in its medium bodied frame, fresh red cherry, and sappy mouthful, and umami (soy sauce) tannins reminds me of the texture parallels between Burgundy and Rioja. There’s a slight bilgy oak/compost note through the finish but it kind of fits this old world style and it’s woody green herbal twang (rosemary). Good to very good on day two with the coffeed oak settling in to the wine overnight. Leafy undergrowth notes showing it’s age some. Still fresh though. For me, drink now with a good decant to 3 years. Bargain if found $25 AUD and below. 91 pts on quality, add one for sheer drinkability.

89/90. Pop and pour and this is an unknit 89. Give it 2 hrs aeration and its a spherical 90. Has aromas of dusty blueberries, vanilla hints, plums, raspberries and cherries. Its medium bodied freshly fruited plush vanilla inflected zingy blue and red fruits palate has excellent depth and ends long, tangy and tapering.14%. This was on offer at 12 Euros and is very good value at this price. Lay down a couple of years+ to round this out. This has always been a Bordeaux influenced wine. I had this with Chicken Gulasch with Chorizo and had some hard goats cheese and it was a great pairing.

Palate. Med plus tannins, definitely fresh red cherries, hint of confection notes?
I didn't like this wine the first 3 times I tried it via Coravin. Found it to rather flat. Not sure why but this fourth time (also via Coravin, and with Beef noodle soup), it tastes just right...
Dark garnet in appearance with a watery rim. Nice nose but faint of red and blue fruits with very slight oxidation but in a good way, raw meat, some wild game and no discernible oak. That palate is very lively and fresh, on the heavier end of medium-bodied, with some residual alcoholic heat peeking through. The flavor profile includes red, dark blue and even black fruits, tobacco, forest herbs, moderate vanilla cream and toasty oak, good amount of minerality especially towards the zippy and refreshing but slightly alcoholic finish. A very tasty and highly drinkable Marques de Riscal Reserva at this juncture but could certainly see the benefits of medium term cellar time. It paired extremely well with a plate full of sliced Manchego Semicurado. Although far from being the most complex Rioja Reserva out there in the market, but it’s certainly hard to be beat in terms of quality and price.

The appearance is clear and medium ruby in colour.
The nose is clean with medium(+) intensity aromas. There are primary aromas of red fruit (raspberry), and black fruit (blackberry, black cherry), secondary aromas of oak (charred wood, coconut), and tertiary aromas of deliberate oxidation (coffee, almond), bottle age (grilled meat, savoury). This wine is developing.
On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+) acidity, medium(+) tannins, high alcohol, and full body. The flavour intensity is medium(+) with primary notes of black fruit (blackberry, black cherry), red fruit (raspberry), secondary notes of oak (coconut, charred wood, resinous quality, vanilla pods), tertiary aromas of deliberate oxidation (almond, coffee), and bottle age (grilled meat, savoury). The finish has a long length.
Very good quality wine; can drink now, but has potential for further ageing.

A little pedestrian. Maybe simply too young. Distinctively a Rioja, no doubt about it. Not much fruit, solid tannic body and surprisingly much red fruit, think red cherries, that I dislike. Maybe that "simple redness" will turn into "sophisticated brownness" over 5-10 years of cellaring. Or then not. Actually not sure whether I would bet on that happening. Decent, that's all.

Beautiful fresh palette, overload of oak and vanilla. Spicy fruits with fine tannins. Could easily cellar 5-10 years. Some additional complexity would have made this an exceptional wine, but it is very easy-drinking and a hallmark Rioja.

Colour: translucent cherry red Nose: plum, cherry, raspberry syrup, cranberry, cassis. Tobacco leaf, cigar box, vanilla, sweet spice. Palate: cranberry, cherry, plum, strawberry, pomegranate. Cherry syrup. Maybe some blackcurrant/cassis. Medicinal, cough syrup. Liquorice, tar. Tobacco leaf, cigar box, old oak, sweet spice, vanilla. Fresh berry-like acidity; very chunky, firm, structural, drying tannins. Nice, but maybe lacks a little complexity for a reserva? Then, it’s quite reasonably priced. Closed when first opened, but opened up a bit with air. Full bodied, 14% alcohol. Seal: natural cork.

Tasted at the Three Borders Wine Group annual dinner, Hampshire, UK. Served from magnum to accompany main course. A good wine, in a very typical Rioja style. Dark Burgundian colour. Quite rich palate, sweet fruit. Smooth start to the palate, silky. At 5 years from the vintage, this magnum seemed fine to drink now, but will surely keep for another 3-4 years.

Medium Ruby with aromas of dark cherry, liquorice, vanilla and spice. The palate has lush dark fruit, full of vanilla and oak, M+ tannins and acidity along with a M+ body, this is clearly an entry-level Reserva and pretty benchmark but I find the price quite high. At 25 CAD I would expect a little more complexity.

10 year ago, this was a regular and good wine. I have taste their 2010 & 2012 in recent years, and their 2015 yesterday. My conclusion is the same: This state has became a cheap marketing wine... Nothing to do with earlier years. Even in "excellent millesimes" as 2010 & 2015... This is quite drinkable, but just a very light 7-8 dollars supermarket wine, with lots wood, very shy fruit, and already very, very mature at five years.

Red berries and red plum, creamed fruit, brown leaf, gentle oak that's not overt, high acid, fine smooth tannins with gentle astingency. Good

Vanilla and cassis. It’s thin and puckering but with enough interest to keep you coming back.

On the nose, fresh red cherries. Some smokiness.

Served from magnum. Opened 1 hour before serving and decanted into a large decanter. Smooth, earthy and plenty of plummy fruit. Held well throughout the whole evening. Great wine at a reasonable price.

Not bad for table vino. Flavour is there except for flat structure and no finish. Pour and drink cheese pairing

WSET Level 3 Online (Week 5, Spain): [from Coravin]

Some additional complexity would have made this an exceptional wine, but it is very easy-drinking and a hallmark Rioja.

excellent example of a reserva. Lots of fruit on the nose, some spice, caramel and oak. The palate is smooth, more red and black fruit, fullish and an ideal wine for discussing #politics with your friends. 88 points

Colour: translucent cherry red
Nose: plum, cherry, raspberry syrup, cranberry, cassis.

Red purple colour, not too deep
Very fresh fruit on the nose, brambles, blackcurrants, really lovely freshness
Refreshing on the palate, some bite but smooth, fruit really to the fore, then leather and a little toast here too.
Long, very Bordeaux-like
