My wife and I decided to share a .375 with a platter of leftovers from the weekend. The palate was blueberry, dark cherry, hints of tobacco and pecans which came out on the long smooth finish.

Layers of well concentrated blue/black fruits blend with dusty, earthy and herby tones. A sturdy acid and tannic structure hold the strength of the fruit together.
Wish I had a grilled piece of red meat to go with this.

One of two wines served to accompany Boxing Day Tourtiere pies. This took a back seat to the 2005 Ch Bouscaut that was a much more seamless and integrated wine. The Q was very primary in sweet dark red fruit and a little out of balance in acidity & tannin. This had been decanted for >1hr but was not as impressive in previous showings.

Excellent bottle of wine that everyone seemed to love. Perfect for Christmas dinner party of Beef Tenderloin and Christmas Chicken. Smooth, interesting fruit notes, good depth, wish I had a few more large formats of this vintage.

One hour decant by our host Agelvis, and it's really ready to go. Deep opaque ruby in the glass. Nose of chocolate malt, cassis and iron ore. Palate of dark red/black fruit, multi layered, and oh so balanced against the great acidic backbone and well integrated tannins. Wonderful spicy finish, maybe Chinese Five Spice? Good length to it, too. I really liked this wine and went back to it a few times throughout the 3 hours or so we were tasting. A challenger for the WOTN to some of us, and it was WOTN to others present. Another great bottle opened by our host, Ag!
One hour decant. Very deep dark magenta color. Chocolate malt, blackberry, cassis, Chinese five spice, and black cherry. Smooth, dry palate, with good acidity. Firm, medium intensity tannins on the longish finish. This is drinking in prime time.

PnP minimal air. Took about an hour to open. Nice integration. Pauillac pencil lead blends with dusty Rutherford tannins while the fruit shines through the finish and mid palate, Mostly blueberry and black Cherry. I thought it may have overpowered hibachi sushi but the opposite as the raw umami flavors paired quite nicely. While it will hold longer im drinking the rest in a year or two.

I took a 375 out of the wine fridge early. Opened it before we left for dinner and let it slow ox for around 4 hours. Came back and poured a glass to watch the ball drop and it had the funky aftertaste of wine that is about to go bad. So much for our New Years toast. Never had a problem with Quintessa before so I was very surprised.

Decanted 2 hours and half. Expressive nose of dark cherries and blackcurrants with spicy notes and some pencil shavings. The palate is beautiful and elegant - great balance with tannins that are integrating nicely already, good acidity, lots of refined and precise cherries and plums and then spice, cigar box, some licorice and leafy notes, with a medium ending that has a touch of vanilla to balance it all. Very good and approachable, this went great with Prime NY Strip. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère.

Two hour decant. Deep dark magenta color. Stewed blackberry, blueberry and plum, toasted coconut, licorice, chocolate mousse, and mushroom dust on the expressive nose. Dry, suede-like palate, with fine, tongue coating acidity and a cherry popsicle note. Firm, full, medium intensity tannins on the long finish. This is drinking at (or just beyond) it’s prime for my palate.

90 min decant. Deep dark ruby magenta color. Black cherry jam, blackberry, strawberry, oatmeal cookie, violet, scorched sage, and subtle crunchy peanut butter on the nose. Smooth, dry palate, with good acidity. Firm, satiny, medium intensity tannins on the longish finish.
I bought this on a whim during a Twin Liquor Dollar Sale (price is $1 above wholesale) a few months ago. It’s been a few years since I last had a Quintessa. This must have been stored well. My gamble was rewarded.

BYO'd to Keg on a quiet Monday evening. Pop n pour, no decant and none required. It was delicious right out of the bottle. Pronounced dark red fruits and spice. Medium plus body with lush, maturing fruit in balance with alcohol, acid and tannins. Kept filling out as the night went on. broader array of fruit (cassis, black cherry, stewed plums). Went very well with both a roast prime rib and grilled striploin w bearnaise.

Tasted at the winery from magnum. A hedonistic blend of fruit and classic Napa structure. Has a long way to go and should really start peaking in 3-5 years.

2015 Meritage & Bordeaux Reds; 12/12/2021-12/13/2021 (Canoehead Central): Double decanted for minimum one hour. Bright crimson black. Pronounce nose. Sweet, ripe blue and black fruits. blueberry pie, black currant jelly, roasted figs. Absolute delight on the palate, layers and layers of fruits in balance with refreshing acidity and fine-grained tannins. Great concentration and complexity. Tied for longest finish across ten wines. Great structure for aging but I wouldn't have the discipline keeping my hands off this one. My WOTN.
Epic Napa Trip - Day 6: Tasted at Quintessa - This wine was similar to the 2016. Nose and flavors mirrored the 2016, but just not to the same extent, i.e., more muted and a little more disjointed. I think this wine, even though older than the 16 and 18, acts the youngest, and will need the most time to come together and reach its potential. Definitely nice now, but plenty of room to improve! 93+ today....should pick up a couple points as it matures.

Napa trip day 6: Drank a small pour at the winery's tasting facility. Ripe, savory rich blue fruit, nice earth. It could use some acid or minerality. This wasn't jammy but it comes across as heavy. The tannins are fairly present.

I was craving a Cali cab so I pulled this one from the cellar to give it a try. Decanted for 1 hour and then consumed over the course of 2 additional hours (used the Vinturi to aerate). While still young and primary, this is drinking very nicely. The depth and concentration of the fruit is what makes this wine $100+. This is a big wine that will stand up to the heartiest of meals. However, it is also a balanced wine suggesting it will get better with time in the cellar.

Opened for 4 hours, double decanted for 30 min and consumed 30 minutes later with New York Steak at J Alex Boca.
The wine started as a medium body with high acidity and plenty of tannins. After about one hour the wine got bolder, the fruit got more prominent and the magic began. Sadly it was just the last sip of the bottle. No question that this bottle has a lot of upside in years to come…
Solid 93+

This half bottle was open about for 4 hours. It was sandwiched between a Realm Bard and a Realm Absurd which probably was not fair. Dark fruit on the nose, the palate was dark berries, leather, and coffee. The finish was moderate to long. This wine is good but it was a poor choice on my part as it was overshadowed by the Realms.

With great balance and complexity, the wine keeps evolving over the course of a few hours. Initially it was pure cassis and rocks, but that eventually led into cherries, chocolate, anise, toasted nuts. Lovely acidity, well-integrated tannins, and good length. This is a more restrained style with forward fruit, but not bombastic by any means - highly enjoyable.

Opened the bottle (375) over the weekend but decided not to drink it so I put the cork back in and left it in the fridge. Took it out last night and a few of us shared it. Dark fruit on the nose, the palate was dark berries, leather, and some coffee. The finish was moderate to long. I think I scored it lower than previously because it needs food and might have been open a little too long.

Last tasted 2 years ago on release and was very underwhelmed. Had 2 bottles between 2018 and early 2019 and still underwhelmed. Like other reviewers I agreed that it needed several years. Opened a bottle this past weekend and was blown away at the evolution. Great wine and I do believe there is something more. Give it 4 hours in the decanter and you won’t be disappointed. Good stuff.
Update: last bottle was 2.5 years ago. Opened one yesterday. Came out tight. 2 hours in decanter and it was singing. Stand by 94 rating. Drink up. This is ready to go.

Well my good friend Michael and his wife came over for dinner and since he is the one that got me into collecting wine and it was also my daughters birthday I decided to open some nice Cabernets to go with the rotisserie ducks that we were having for dinner. So i opened a 2012 Backus, a half bottle of the 2015 and a bottle of the 2012 Hillside Select. This bottle was opened and decanted an hour before drinking. While we were sitting on the patio talking and drinking the Backus I realized that our rate of consumption was moving along so I decanted this half bottle. The nose is all fruit. The palate is blueberry, dark cherry, hints of tobacco and pecans which came out on the long smooth finish. I think this bottle of wine was my personal favorite. 94+.

From a .375 that was opened three hours prior to drinking. Dark fruit on the nose with a hint of vanilla. The palate was blackberry, dark cherry, hints of vanill and pecans which came out on the long smooth finish. Served with oven roasted chicken on an extremely rainy N.J. night. I honestly believe that in a couple of years with a decent time in the decanter you are looking at 96+. For last night 94+.

Very high quality wine. But I should have trusted previous reviewers and not opened yet. It is still too young. At first hour, still had quite a bite. Second hour was there was too much change going on, but third hour it really started to develop. Could tell this will be beautiful but follow other reviewers advice don’t drink it yet.

Pinot Noir lovers cab. Very neon purple on first pour - likely the carmenere influence. Shows lots of red fruits like stawberry purée and cranberry. Not overly complex, nor last finishing - just not memorable. Certainly well made, a bit more old world in terms of fruit, but I find the quality price ratio is just not there for me personally. YMMV.

Elegance is the first word that comes to mind. For a younger wine it’s very drinkable as the tannins are already very soft. More age won’t help this wine. Ripe fruit with plenty of structure makes this a great wine to drink for the next five years.

This wine is an infant. Needs time, don’t touch for 2-3 years. Wait for it, I believe this MAY be an epic wine. Loads of dark red and black fruit. After a decant at 5 pm, immediate feel was a hot (alcohol bite). This is a tannic wine which will soften with time. George describes with some taste currant and cherry.

Deep dark reddish-purple bordering on opaque in color. Full, forward, & fragrant aromas of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & cassis with overtones of dusty/earthy & spice notes, herbs, cocoa, minerals & a slight hint of oak/vanilla in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, plush, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with cocoa, herbs, minerals & a slight hint of vanilla/oak. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing, but should develop further with additional aging at which time it may merit a higher score.

A little light in weight for a Quintessa. Needs more time, but I don’t sense it will have the same strength in the end that I’m accustomed to feom this vineyard
Sample tasting at 2019 Philly Mag Wine Festival. All wines PnP at room temperature. This is scored along with ~40 other quality wines that I tasted over several hours.

This Cabernet blend has a history, a site, and a story - but, when it comes to what's in the glass for this vintage, there's not a lot of there there, at least yet. Ruby red in color, medium in body, nose of boysenberry, graphite, and a pencil lead. Diffuse tastes of blueberry, cedar, and straw, with a dusty and brief finish. 14.5% alcohol. Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere. Wait to drink until 2019 or later.
The wine doesn't have any rough edges, but it's under-stated to the point of being bland. Come to think of it, it's like a Generation X proprietary blend: laid-back, lackadaisical, and unfocused, but with savvy marketing. Maybe it's because I'm part of this generation, but I tried to like this wine... then decided it wasn't worth the effort. I enjoyed the 2010 and the 2014, but this lacks their intensity or tension. 90-91.
Dark rich purple color and a great nose. Perfect blend of dark fruit and tannins on the pallets with an excellent lingering finish. Probably the best Quintessa in quite a few years.

Forward, deeply colored, lush, round, open wine, with layers of plushly textured dark fruits, vanilla, chocolate, licorice and dark cherries. This is already quite easy to drink.

YMMV.

Popped and poured. Feel this is not their best vintage as soft and non discript. Will try with long decant and see if mind changes

Aired for 3 hours. I thought it was spectacular. So smooth, extraordinarily flavorful, not a hint of alcohol or tartness. Just a great bold, balanced Napa wine. Need more of it.

Very ripe fruit and silky smooth, tannins are already well integrated and drinking well out of the bottle. Delicious and very fruit forward, perhaps a bit more ripe than I would prefer it to be, but certainly enjoyable.

Enjoyed a great meal at Hakkasan SF and the wine paired nicely with the roasted duck.

Sampled at a tasting event. This is ripe, sweet, tight, and firm. Not heavy handed, but with good depth and finish.

Young but soft, spicy back palate. Wait a couple years for full potential

One of my favorite so far. Decanter 2 hrs. Very ready to drink and well rounded. Remind me of the 2007 I tasted at the vineyard years ago.

Dark rich purple color and a great nose. Perfect blend of dark fruit and tannins on the pallets with an excellent lingering finish. Probably the best Quintessa in quite a few years.
