Although lacking the complexity of the Alto Moncayo, this is a well made delicious wine. Deep purple, a subtle nose, full bodied, long on the palate and medium tannins, this wine is a perfect one to sit and enjoy in the afternoon. The problem is that it is so good, one glass is not enough!

Dark ruby. Medium + intense nose of dark cherries, slight figs, over ripe blackcurrant, raspberries, black pepper, some leather, some tobacco, some dark chocolate. Lots going on...
Palate similar. Ripe dark fruit with a decent acidity and structure. Intense and persistent. Pairs very nicely with meats and specifically the tacos I had with this one.
PNP. A bit full throttle, but well balanced and fun to drink. Candied red fruit, raspberry and black raspberry. 15.5% but the age has helped by adding a bit of leather, and softening the slightly dry tannins. Nice bright acidity to boot. Drink now and over the next 5 years. Strong value.

A superb 100% Grenache from the Campo de Borja appellation in Spain. This wine is priced $15 CAD less then the Garnacha bottling and is just as good in my opinion. Needed 2 hours decanting to soften the still present tannins. I would suggest giving this another 2 year of bottle age and enjoying it over the following decade. Deep ruby, notes of dark berries with a full mouth feel, full body, with a lengthy and balanced finish. Very ripe and very well balanced for 15.50% alcohol. Priced $35 CAD at the time, it’s worth every dollar.

This is a super QPR Garnacha from Alto Moncayo. It definitely needs time to open up. Big ripe fruit and alcohol at first mellow into a well balanced wine of dark fruits, dried herbs, and acid. Like most ripe Spanish Garnacha it is not highly tannic. It was absolutely delicious with our homemade pizza this week!

Pop and pour. Dark purple with clean nose. Palate is soft, some smoke and primary purple fruit and tad sweet for our liking. 1 hour of air brings pleasant tannin and acid for balance, though never develops much of a fruit palate. But oh that structure... vacusealed and came back to 2 nights later, and I kid you not: this is the the softest textured wine I’ve ever had. The plushness is ethereal, like drinking vapors or liquid cotton candy. The sensation is true pleasure. If only this wine had flavors that were above average or great, this could be a 96-97 overall package.

Nose of black fruit, smokey sweet spices and vanilla. Full bodied palette, nice pure fruit and integrated oak, soft grained tannins. Nice lengthy aftertaste with acidic uplift. Night 1: Really looking forward to this, as I've always enjoyed Veraton. But this was disjointed, hot and bitter tonight, with the raspberry notes that I expected really hidden behind this wall of unpleasantness. Not at all what I was hoping. We'll see if air gives this a second life tomorrow. Have I waited too long on this, or not long enough?

This is the entry-level wine of the Alto Moncayo estate. A rich and powerful Grenache wine (100 percent, from vines between 30 and 50 years old), aged for 16 months in French and American oak barrels of which 80 percent was new. Decanted: one hour prior to tasting. Color: dark cherry red, almost black, with some purple reflections. Nose: intense scents of black and red fruit, kirsch liqueur, vanilla and some earthy nuances. On the palate: a generous, full-bodied wine, plenty of ripe plum and bramble fruit, perfect in balance, with a silky texture and harmonious tannins. Finish: long lingering aftertaste with some delicate balsamic tones. Optimal enjoyment: now–2024.

Great dark deep color. Nose of dried cherry and cedar wood with some spice box. Mouth is medium weight with tart black cherry that blooms into a slight dusty and raisinous middle with a quick, lightly tannin finish. Delicious on its own or with a lighter meal.

While I do like the wine, a previous reviewer hit it on the mark. The first thing I got was a sense of jammy, what they called stewed fruit. Maybe a bit too much of that savory sensation for my tastes, but overall the wine was enjoyable and went very well with some St Louis Style Ribs.

One of my favorite Spanish reds, and dependable year after year. Nose of black cherry ganache, spice and darker savory ("balsamic" per winemaker); lusicous, bright black and purple fruit, lovely acidity, a touch of baking spice, and a long, fruity, chocolaty finish. Grenache at its very best.

The Veraton worked well with fat meat. But the tannins felt compartmentalized still, and without food I’d say they are harsh even though they feel fine-grained. I think in a year or two the tannins will have bled into licorice and integratrd a bit more. Apart from that there is a certain depth of fruit that you don’t see every day.

Drank decanted over an hour, outside at Wine Social- a kind of suburban Metro-North-Oakland-County (Oxford) Royce Detroit establishment on a 90 degree day. Ed, you really find some gems for us, thanks!
Aged 16 months in 60% new French oak and 40% American oak, this biggie offers great structure and richness. It makes us think of an Aussie Shiraz. It has depth, girth, body, the stuff to age a decade-plus in the woods.
Black currant and tobacco with a touch of dark chocolate on the finish. Big and basically delicious! You’ll be pleased with this pick up. A powerful Grenache with licorice, bramble berries, red cherries, vanilla and pepper…
And the finish to hold it all up.
Excellent effort. Will be better in many years.

Double decanted, took to spanish restaurant and served a couple of hours later. It is unbelievable how a $20 wine can have this depth, richness and neverending aftertaste, along with everything you know it has going on if you have tried this amazing garnacha before, this vintage blew me away. I'll be buying all I can grab (looking forward to taste the Alto Moncayo AM and the Aquilón!). Delicious now and has the stuff to age 10-15 years, although it's so yummy that will be hard to resist.

P: MF body; Rndish entry with ALMOST swtish frt fairly quickly met by some almost swtish, very, VERY finely tannic pcker which slowly, fairly seamlessly transitions into a LONG, very, VERY slightly tannic finish yet a tang & DISTINCT swtness. Approachable now with food, this DESERVES into Fall of '19, then drinking for at LEAST 3 yrs more. SUPERBLY done! My VG+/EXC-. It doesn't impress me at first but grows on me. This is nice. Not spectacular - but nice. 88.

Needs some air time before consuming. This is a rich full bodied wine with excellent fruit characteristics.

Muscular yet approachable. Friendly beyond belief.

Bottle decant - drank over two hours with friends. I would recommend a decant of 2 hours to really get the most of this wine right now. Bing cherry bounces off your tounge, richness and depth beyond any other $25 bottle of wine I've had. Great QPR.

Winebar [4 Whts & 8 Reds] from 1/26/18 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): N: RIPE, vanilla, earth
[This vendor's $23.95 puts it in the upper quartile of a large wine-searcher field.]
